  • The TU Ball is one of the oldest and most traditional ball events in Vienna. Its origin can be traced back to the so called „Techniker-Kränzchen“, an event originally organized by students of the Polytechnic Institute (today the TU Wien), which was founded in 1815.
The brothers Johann and Joseph Strauß were students at the Polytechnic Institute and later on became two of the world´s most famous musicians and composers. They both dedicated many of their waltzes and polkas to the „Herren Studenten der Technik“.
Nowadays the TU Ball takes place on the last Thursday in January at the Hofburg Vienna, the imperial palace in the heart of Vienna and is well known and loved for its youthful flair. The opening ceremony, an event not to be missed, features traditional ball opening elements combined with unique choreographic ideas and is accompanied by the University´s very own orchestra. The "Damenspende", given to the ladies attending the ball, is specially designed every year.
The music of the opening ceremony in 2015 will be played by the orchestra of the TU Wien, conducted by Juan Sebastián Acosta.
