- Geoffrey Boycott on his eleven favourite bowlers. Part seven: With Joel Garner in your side, you got steep bounce, accuracy, and a bowler willing to bowl against the wind. Also, the tailenders didn't trouble you at all.

I love BIG BIRD, when i was a kid in the 80's I watched Joel Garner on the field before play in Adelaide when they were doing warm up and he came over to our group of 10-15 kids on the boundary to sign autographs and i was the only one without a pen, he asked me did i want his autograph and i said i don't have a pen, he then said to me "well you can't be the only one not to get something and he took off his warm up shirt and gave it to me. I was on cloud nine for the rest of the year and wore that shirt whenever West Indies played that summer the shirt was HUGE on me but i wore it with pride and still have that shirt today 30+ years later today it is framed and hangs on my wall with pride to remind me of that magical day. I forever love the West Indies and the BIG BIRD still. The single greatest moment of my life to receive that from my idol.
are you a man or woman?
That's a lovely story, and shows what a very nice man Joel Garner obviously was, even though he was an absolute terrorist when bowling to batsmen.
@@momthegreatest He was a child at the time and that is all that matters.
great story
You are very lucky.
"No one hits Joel Firey, not even Viv"
"Right then, I'll go to Bed " :D
I remember Botham smashing a ball from Garner into the stand at Lords in a one dayer in 1980.
I remember seeing Joel play for Somerset and boy was he incredible. As Boycott says though of the pitch he was a lovely man. He always had a word with us teenagers and signed autographs no matter how many there were. A truly wonderful man and a cricketing legend.
Joel Garner was the best ODI bowler ever. High praise from Boycott.
250 odd wickets at 20.97 a piece. Unbelievable
Yes indeed
Treat to ears hearing this man´s voice. His voice and accent is everything. He belongs to the 2nd or 3rd last generation of actually great charismatic cricketers. I am 22 years old. RIP cricket since 2007-08. After that cricket started to be played by boys and not men. Yes, I am old school. The real world.
agree
The Yorkshire man who believed or once said that only Yorkshire born & bred men could represent Yorkshire.
That's the Yorkie accent there....nice to hear.Last heard that spoken when I schooled up in Beverly near Hull-1980-1984 !!!!!
I laughed when he opened his mouth....took me back to the school yard surrounded by Yorkies !!!!!
Bloody Well Spoken,Your SPOT ON as was BIG Joel with Those Yorkers. 🏝️
1:38 “Viv was a truly great player”. I know this is a video about Joel but a lovely little tribute in there to the one of the greats from Geoffrey
Garner was just so great to watch. A special talent -- credit to both men here, GB giving credit where credit is due.
He is a great player and great person.I got his autograph as a 6 year old kid in the early 80s.I was happy and still got it to this day.He is a great player and person
Wow. Top choice. For every wicket Joel Garner took, he gave your team 20 runs. That means that *on average* (if he was playing, with Marshall or Holding or Roberts or Croft or - well, a long list of others who all had similar averages), your team *on average* would NEVER score more than 220 runs. And that's at your team's best! No wonder they were invincible during my childhood. And then there were the legendary batsmen to worry about (Richards etc.). It was just no contest.
Garner was absolutely brutal . a batsmen , if they were lucky enough to get through Roberts and holding ,then had to face garner and croft and garner had the best bouncer of the 4 as it always was heading for the upper chest so it was too low to duck ,you just had to take the hit . g Chappell got hit in the chest by garner more than any other bowler by a mile . those 4 bowlers were just friken brutal. You'll never see another 4 like them ever again
If Vivian Richards can't hit you, you are something special & really Great.
Top players like Richards, Greenidge and Lloyd found it difficult to score against bowlers like Garner, Marshall and Holding in domestic cricket in England or the Caribbean.
I owe my love of cricket to Joel Garner. I went to a non-sporty school and didn't really understand Cricket. I thought the bowler lobbed the ball and the batsman defended his wicket, tapping it away and the batsmen ambled between the wickets. Then one day, I was off work and plonked myself in front of BBC2. It was 1985 (I think) and Joel was playing for Somerset. He took 8 wickets. This wasn't a game. This was war...I was hooked. I don't even remember who Somerset were playing! But It was in the days when both Botham and Viv played for Somerset (I think). P.S. I'm not a Somerset supporter, but always keep an eye on them :)
Unplayable .......just like Holding, Marshall, Roberts and Croft, truly the greatest fearsome attack ever..........
All of them were ABSOLUTE FREAKS
Totally agree
First choice for an ODI bowling attack. Would go for $5m in an IPL auction today.
NPA1001 more like 10 mill
Absolutely he will be first pick in IPL
Nah he would be smashed in IPL like every other bowler. This is not 70s & 80s anymore where he got to bowl to batters without helmet & protection.
With small boundaries, big bats, batters attacking relentlessly, he would too go for boundaries often.
Hi, He reminds me of my late brother who played club cricket and friends and people called him JOEL GARNER. JOEL is a true Legend of world Cricket.
I grew up in a village called Knebworth bout 25 miles north of London, which had a small cricket club in the grounds of the stately home. In the mid eighties Viv Richards, Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner played an exhibition match there. Great memories!
Saw Joel Garner bowl at Trent Bridge in a one day, I think it was 1985, first cricket match I ever saw. Started running right on the boundary. Scared the pants off me, God only knows what he did to the batsmen facing him...
Love to hear Boycott talking about great cricketers!
Out of the 4 fast bowlers (Roberts,Holding,Garner and Croft) i always liked big Joel Garner especially in the 1 day game never forget him ripping out Gooch Gower & Larkins in one over in the 1979 World Cup Final at Lord's
James Hope Malcolm Marshall was better than the lot of them
wow, nice to hear from one of the living legends Mr.Boycot. it reminds me my old days, where we have a few televisions and had to depend upon others to watch cricket in a black & white TV. at those times when I was a kid I've never seen a match windies had ever lost, it has become a belief that no one could win the windies. what a great era of cricket and windies team. I was a huge fan of windies cricket.
What a Fantastic series this is. Thank you Geoff Boycott and @espncricinfo
Watched Joel play for Littleborough vs Rochdale in the late 70s.My pop knew him, so he introduced me. Couldn't believe how tall he was, or how large his hands were. He was a very gentle giant off the pitch. When he went on to bowl he got sent off for bowling bouncers 3 in an over. Best Yorker in cricket,. With beefy and viv for Somerset they were a formidable team. That average in his test career was awesome. 🤯🏏✌❤
could listen to boycott all day about this great game, most times I agree with him also today no different! Big bird also a legend like Geoff to greats of the game.
His voice is treat to ears. Favorite comm..Bill Lawry. Boycss has to be the 2nd best.
Unusually accurate. Interesting to hear what Boycott says about him bowling into the wind.
Joel Garner, part of the West Indies Trinity of Holding, Marshall and Garner. Along with Croft and Roberts (and Wes Hall before them) the West Indies had the best bowling attack that there has ever been.
Clive Lloyd's West Indies team of 1975 to 1985 is the best Cricket Team ever.
It would have been interesting to have seen Clive Lloyd's team (at its peak) play the Australian Team of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
It would have been a close contest. But the bowling of Garner, Holding & Marshall combined with the batting of Haynes, Greenidge, Richards and Lloyd would have had the edge.
Your idea of comparing the 80's Windies vs. the 90's/00's Aussies is interesting. I think it would have been a 50/50 chance on paper - not counting uncontrollable variables (such as the state of the pitch, weather, the coin toss and so on). Here's why I think it's a 50-50 chance.
Warne's first major haul in Tests (7 for 52) came against the Windies in '92 - a series where we only lost by one run. McGrath nailed down his place in the side when he led the Aussies to winning the Frank Worrell trophy in '95. Add Gillespie and Lee with their pace and swing, and you've got a fantastic bowling attack - with three out of four Aussie bowlers who went past the 300-wicket mark (and two of the four highest ever) in it. And we all know how good those four bowlers were. Our 2000's side had four blokes who all averaged above 50 - Hayden (who was the only man who went past Lara, and could tear a bowling attack apart at will), Ponting (he was (a) the only Aussie who got past Border, and (b) is second only to Tendulkar in terms of Test runs), Hussey (a strong offside player, with a patient mindset and also a good pair of hands in the gully) and Clarke (who's been a great leader over the last year or so, and has been a reliable batsman who plays spin well, and adapts to the state of play rather easily). Then with Gilchrist taking the second highest number of dismissals behind the stumps (and making 47.6 in front of them), Langer providing the ice to Hayden's fire, and Symonds being an exceptional fielder and a fine batting allrounder, one has a team who could beat the 1980's Windies. Heck, even if Symonds or Clarke got injured, there's a fifth batsman who averaged 50 in that period (Waugh) who could slot in nicely.
Not that Lloyd's team are doomed to fail, necessarily. If you had Greenidge and Haynes opening (only Langer and Hayden came close to matching the number of century-stands that they made), Richardson and Gomes at first and second drop, and Richards and Lloyd rounding out the middle order, then that's a bloody strong batting line-up to start with - even though Richards was the only batsman who had an average above 50. That's before considering Dujon's ability with the bat (he averaged 39.5 in first class, and 33 in Tests), and even Harper and Marshall could make runs down the order. With Dujon being an athletic keeper and Harper a great offspinner and fielder, one can easily see why Marshall, Holding and Garner was an effective troika. Marshall was the most gifted of the three - he could swing the ball both ways, had a vicious legcutter, and his ability to gain pace off the pitch and skid the ball through to batsmen (something Boycott himself talked about in another of these videos) meant that (a) he could get wickets on slower pitches and (b) that his bouncer was awkward to deal with. Holding, of course, had sheer pace and would have served as the attack leader in this side; and Garner, as Boycott observed, was quite a parsimonious and difficult bowler given his height and the amount of bounce and economy that brought to bear.
Given the sheer amount of talent and experience found in both sides, it really seems to be evenly split. Even the small things like coin tosses and pitch behaviour can have quite an effect on the state of play, so there's no telling as to who might win the game, until the coin's tossed, the pitch's inspected and the weather's predicted.
I would want the Waugh twins at their peak, Taylor's dare win innovative captaincy, Warne and McGrath at their peak, plus the best fielding team Australia mustered ... that means Healy behind the stumps, Boon at short leg, Taylor and Mark Waugh at first and second slip, Steve Waugh in gully, Ponting and Michael Slater prowling either side of the wicket - Slater, while erratic, could be a brilliant fielder. Craig McDermott had great success on occasions against the windies in their full pomp also. Therefore, Australia of 1995-96 to take on Windies of 1984-85. I am looking at two teams that were actually teams that took the field.
At the end of the day, we can pick teams that were great over long terms or at any one time ... the 1948 fit into the latter, but no doubt would have scaled the heights of either of the two teams in question. I would like to see how any west indian batting lineup would have fared against England's attack in 2OO5.And the fact that England won three successive ashes series from 1953-1957 against Australian teams that contained miller, lindwall, morris, benaud, hasseet and one or two others minus bradman, I think the English teams of the 195Os deserve a mention in any discussion of the greatest. They were certainly the greatest of their era then and there and that is really all that matters.
I saw a lot of both teams up close and the WI the am from 1978-85 would have beaten The 90's Aussie side 4-1 in a 5 test series. Those starts that Langer and Hayden got would disappear, Poning was a nervous starter, he'd be crapping himself coming in early. McGrath bowling to Grennige and Haynes then Viv would have been awesome, Warne would get a few wickets obviously but if he attacked, the WI would hit back harder.
The West Indies team of the early 1960's are to some extent largely under rated and actually forgotten. My dad talked with such gushing glowing admiration and appreciation of this team.
Statistically they didn't achieve such an impressive aggregate of wins, but in terms of pure talent they were brimming with wonderful stroke play and perfectly potent and balanced bowling attack.
Nurse/Hunte to open with a middle order of the three W's followed by sobers and kanhai.
speed/seam/swing: Hall Griffith Worrell Sobers
spin Gibbs Sobers.
i liken this team to Pakistan of the late 80's early 90's. perfectly balanced and potent yet sadly statistics win ratios do not reflect their true greatness.
Boycotts voice is as synonymous as benaud for me. When they go together it’s poetry.
I agree 100% with Boycott... I never seen any batsman playing an attacking shot in Bigbird's bowling
Sunil Gavaskar
Boycs as wonderfully opinionated as ever! Yes Joel would be in my best ever test side too - scares the hell out of me.
Greats like Boycott had nerves of steel, literally. They faced the goliaths without a helmet, took some nasty injuries and yet remained calm. Cricket has been modified for pussies now with only one bouncer an over, field restrictions, free hits blah blah. Has become a complete batsman's game now.
Krishnan RV Problem is if you get hit in the head it can potentially kill you, seams (bad pun sorry) sensible to me. I agree about bouncers tho perfectly legitimate ball to play.
Krishnan RV What? Cricket was never jousting! Get a grip of yourself
@Krishnan RV Literally?
I used to watch Joel Garner and wonder how anyone could score runs off him. Boycott confirms it, the bounce he got meant that batsmen had to focus on saving their lives rather than score runs. There must have been someone who middled a shot off him for 4, maybe a 6 as well. But I do not recall seeing it.
6-8 and a high arm action. Unreal!
VK could hardly face the Aussie quicks recently, so I blooming well doubt that he could!
It's been along time since Joel and his mates dominated the sport! Even the guys retired a while (20+ yrs) probably never faced him. Garner gets lost in history of that period, only mentioned in the slip-stream of Holding, Marshall & Roberts... but I'm telling you now, he was the best of his type and I include McGrath, Ambrose & Walsh in that mix! When the GREATEST batsmen since Bradman just 'sees off' Joel Garner, even in the nets... Wow! Just shows how great he was! If he bowled now against the modern batsmen, who have no patience, or technique to defend him... he'd average close to single figures in tests! #scarey
Beautiful video
Its actually quite fascinating to look at Joel Garner's stats. He has better stats than both Andy Roberts and Michael Holding, what are more famously regarded than Joel. But Garner has an incredible record in both ODI's and in Tests.
Garner had the best bouncer of the 4 . his bouncer always headed for the batsmens chest so it was too low to duck and it was too fast too hook so he hit a lot of batsmen . g Chappell in particular got hit more by garner than any other bowler
Good collection about Joel.
A truly great bowler, and even better person.
Father used to say while he trying for catching the bucket of hands😄 not only loyed and vivean gripping & swinging the grip like a pencil 😄
2:45 Garner played an even number of Tests(29) home and away! Jokes apart, all time great!
TRULY ONE OF THE BEST EVER. TOUGH TO SCORE ON.
Thanks sir Geoff biocott
This guy just missed out All-time Greatness due to Longevity factor.
Geoffrey one of the best commentators
True.
Would have loved to see Garner play more. Big bird of Paradise. Garner, Malcolm Marshall and Wasim Akram, etc...could employ strategy and fast deliveries with uncanny efficiency.
Who is more difficult Garner or Ambrose
Geoff Boycott was off the scene 1974/5 did nt face Lillee and Thommo! ..Thommo at his fastest!
windies pacemen were far more intimidating
Faced them in 1977.
❤❤❤
He is the best analyzer of the game.
Boycott, as selfish as all hell. In my side? Abso 'cn lutely!!! The man knows cricket and respects quality players.
You are luger
Wish someone had Muhammad Irfan pak bowler (7ft-1in) see Joel Garner videos and train him to bowl like him. But very sorry to see he not performing as he should have performed. M. Irfan was 5 inches taller but he did not bowl with high action as he just slided the ball and not hit the deck as hard as Joel Garner used to do. Very sad he played only 4 tests and got only 10 wickets. He could have been an asset for Pakistan if he was properly trained. Bad management of Pakistan Board.
Boycott #legend
Gret legend
Could listen to Geoff Boycott any day and every day. A truly unique non politically correct commentator. It's a treat when he's in the commentary box. And his old Mom would be lining up to bat against so many "buffet" bowlers 😊
I remember watching Garner bowl in the 50 over games and wondering why no-one seemed to be able to hit him. Now I know.
The wonderfully opinionated Boycott! What WI cricket would do for a Joel Garner now...
Or a Malcolm Marshall or a Curtly Ambrose...
But Krish shrikant's attack against Joel in 1983:world cup was incredible.
Could listen to Geoffrey Boycott and Ian Chappell all day talk about other players
Goel Garner lethal Great West Indies fast bowler very difficult to score runs against him.
No one better than Joel Garner
Where is his final selection
Boycs..possibly the most egotistical, selfish s.o.b that played this great game & loved by me for it.
Always the 1st name on my all time team!
Yes, even ahead of Bradman, Sobers, Sangakkara & Warne.
I remember Imran Khan hitting Garner for 3 sixes in the an over & getting 20 plus runs in the last over of a match in Sharjah in 1985.
Rarely has one seen that & to hit Garner in that manner needs real skill & hitting, Imran had that in him & wasn't he special.
Can there be this bowling line up again ? NEVER EVER INDEED ! Imagine you have to face the very dangerous Andy Roberts Joel Garner next change is Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall...all four very different and styles strategies . What an era that was and many have missed this era and will never ever understand what these 4 names were in bowling for oppositions and batsmen world over. Absolute terror its like getting slaughtered murdered killed going into bat & facing them. As if entering a cage of vicious wild animals full of Lions Tigers Cheetahs Panthers . These bowlers gave forced and gave birth to one bouncer per over rule from England. Patterson Walsh Bishop Ambrose were the last recognized dangerous famous 4 from West Indies after the Fab4 Never even in cricket history Man of the Match semifinal and the finals 1983 World Cup Hero Super Star Mohinder Amarnath is the most highly underrated player in the world. 1982 Imran Khan said he is the best in the world for playing fast bowling especially Bouncers short deliveries highest scorer in that 1982 series in Pakistan , 1982 1983 West Indies tours Viv Richards said Jimmy Amarnath plays west indian bowlers and all global quick genuine fast bowlers the best. I have seen him play since 1980s he got hit on head jaws face nose got injured the most like no other player ever in cricket history you can check about him and you will be shocked to know how brave and courageously Mohinder Amarnath hit the hook shots attacked them with ease to the worlds fastest bowlers Lillie thomson hadlee imran roberts marshall garner holding etc Also note that current Williamson root kohli babar Smith AB Devilliers Maxwell Chris Gayle Rohit Sharma etc can't bat against these quality bowlers and that too with bigger larger sophisticated bats state of the art protections ⛑helmets guards equipment gadgets fielding rules shorter boundaries restrictions on bouncers. Boycott vs Holding Richards vs Lillie Gavaskar vs Marshall Srikanth vs Imran Khan Mark Waugh vs Alan Donald Kohli vs Anderson Waugh vs Ambrose Any other encounters you know please add them here.
Here for this sarcastic old man.
I used watch G B batting that timing it was boring because he will block all day tire bowlers now u have to appreciate England doesn’t players like him
Sir Geoffrey, were you Rodney Hogg's BUNNY or were you not Rodney Hogg's BUNNY! Hoggy get's no recognition!
Im no Boycott fan but the 78-9 series he had had more than enough shite to deal with
@@dlamiss that's right Yorkshire took the captaincy away from him and on top of that his mother passed away before that tour no wonder he was in some distress
GARNER was not sucessful against India in the 1983 world cup. Kapildev and Srikanth would have played better than other with their unorthodox shots.. West Indies with Roberts, Holding, Garner and marshall was out classed by Indians twice . Srikath is unorthodox and he can slash any bowler. Why Mr. Garner did not visit India and he knew the reasons. Holding and Marshall was more Lethal than Garner. Majidkhan palyed very well against this mighty west indian bowlers in 1977 in west indies and topped the average . Nobody can hit Garner is only partly correct.Thommo can lift the ball better than Garner even in dead pitch and he is more dangerous than anybowler at his peak.

Joel Garner the big bird was very difficult to socre.... Imran Khan hit him for 3 6s in an over in Sharjah .Video is present on youtube
So Garner was good only on livelier tracks which makes him an ordinary bowler, right?
No. Garner averaged better away from home. That's the hallmark of a great bowler.
He went to India and cleaned up. Many others failed, but Joel didn't. 20'9 average per wicket. Only Malcolm Marshall beats him.
Garner was unplayable.
@@lonestar6709 There were no Indian tour during Bird's time apart from infamous revenge series 1983 where he was injured and during 1978 tour he was banned due to Packer tests.
Continuous 3days batting record broken less run only Boycott & Dennis Amis openers the same in Pakistan Musar nazar😄
Jeffrey boycott , amazingly inspired by garnar .
viv Didn't hit him.ok conversation over.good night..
Not very quick u gotta be kidding me he was freakingly quick
Imran khan hit him 3 magnificent sixes in one over.
Yes, not many can remember that.
Imran hit him for 3 sixes in a match at Sharjah in 1985.
