This production's recording really needs to be released. I just can't fathom why anyone would keep such a masterpiece away from people. To truly go back to the roots of the Wiz and realize who started the show that Diana Ross (poorly, in my opinon) introduce to those of us in the younger audiences. Stephanie Mills is just so underrated and it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
There used to be a clip to this version available on RUclips, but now it’s just the audio. Still BEAUTIFUL…..the original version it is…and still gives me chills. The movie version should NEVER have been made in MY opinion.
Kevin Flanagan I was 13 years old...I didn't know what "belting" was but I knew I loved what I heard! This song brought me to tears (and it still does) This was the first show I saw in New York...Original Cast and the impact it made on me. First in what was achieved in staging my young mind was opened up to so many possibilities..a tornado ballet, the Yellow Brick Road being portrayed by actors, and that fantastic score!
Love this version a lot more than the film version of the song. Stephanie Mills and Ted Ross took me back to church with their singing. Thank you, The Wiz Fan
Took my children back in 1975 ... despite any other Broadway show they've seen - this was most memorable! It was absolutely Amazing! Stephanie Mills - Incredible!
I love this song out of all the song in the musical I went to go see this in 1975 like 9 times and each night I went it was so magical ❤🎉 I wish they recorded this show live with the original cast 😢
God how i wish this could have been captured on film, the Stephanie Mills renditions of all The Wiz songs just hit so much harder than Diana Ross' attempts in the film. Stephanie absolutely should have been in the film.
The entire Broadway show was professionally recorded and few times but the people who have the recordings won’t release them. But it’s speculated that we could be able to see them once the 50th anniversary of the show comes up.
The gorgeously clean performance here is amazing. Regrettably, this song gets muddled by revival productions. Ted Ross is a marvel and this version is superior to the original cast recording. The ending is magic .
I was a Wiz fan before I'd SEEN/HEARD Stephanie Mills. Now my being a Ross Fan to the Bone! I'd eat a brand of hot dog's simply on the strength Diana Liked them so The Wiz for me was great simply because IT WAS DIANA ROSS! Now too old? To young? I guess it depends on what defines too old and/or too young. I liked the movie simply because it was Diana and I'd sense then seen Stephanie Mills play the part on stage in 1984 I believe and I was floored. She was past great but! But it was Stephanie Mills of course so ether or brought me joy and still is!
Wow. She was only 17 years old here. Such a powerhouse.

@Chris Green she fucked her way to the top no doubt but everything happens for a reason.
But honestly- the audience reactions warmed my heart.

How she sings "a summer storm" and "no need to hide"
I remember seeing this in the 70's with Ted Ross as the Lion. What a powerful moment in the play. That memory brought me here. Thanks for sharing
that ending high note and the part where they both say be/im a lion just of the greatest things that made this song what it is amazing
