Just got this bike and should have my license in a few weeks. These videos are amazing and I've been able to follow them and get the bike ready to ride! Greetings from Finland!
These videos are super useful. Explained in a nice and chill way. Damn, I don't even own a motorcycle but watch these videos as they are relaxing and educational. When I grow old(er) I wanna be like The Old Mechanic. Chill and knowledgeable
I just got my first motorcycle, a 2004 Honda 599. That's what it's called in U.S., elsewhere it's the Hornet. I love it & am trying to do all the maintenance myself. Your videos have been very helpful and I have enjoyed spending some time with you. And I think the word you were looking for is tension, just a little, not too loose or too tight. You have helped me save some money and take care of my bike. Thanks much!!
Greets from Serbia. I am new guy in motorbikes, i have purchased CBF 600S from 2004 and those videos helping me to figure it out why and how stuff working.
Thankyou for an informative (and humorous!) video, I own a 2002 900 Hornet, this video applies equally to my bike. Very useful. My son-in-law did the very same thing that you warned against lubricating the chain while the engine was running, he caught the gear lever, knocked it into gear and nearly lost his fingers.A lesson learnt the hard way!!
Hi Nige, oww my goodness !! He has to thank the Lord on his bare knees ! Rightnow I am busy on the Hornet, it has a coolant leak, and a leaking frontfork seal. I am making video's about that for my RUclips channel, so in a while I will upload them. Greets from The Old Mechanic 👍🤛🏍
I've just got my first Bike and I have no Idea how to maintain it. Thanks for your explanation and tipps, enjoyed the video. Greetings from Switzerland.
The service manual says to check and measure the chain tension on the side stand. You do it with the wheel up. I think this may cause the chain to be tightened incorrectly. If the motorcycle is lowered, the tension will change under its own weight. For such adjustment, you should have different measurement parameters than those provided in the manual. Anyway thanks for video, your channel is great. ✌️
Greetz The Old Mechanic.
A great tip for lubing the chain is to cut a piece of cardboard between the tire and the chain so when you spray the lubricant it will not get on your tire!
Dear Old Mechanic, Thank you very much the all videos about the honda hornet. It is very helpful. Where can you buy the honda hornet technical book which is contanin the all data?
Hi Adi, I am apologiezing for my late response, sorry. If that's only on just one side, I would give it a better look to see why that is. Greetz from The Old Mechanic, ride save 👨🔧--->🏍
Hi Macavei, GOOD question. I allways go for the DID (xring) chain, thats good value for your money. For the sprockets I allways go for JT brand. Sometimes the owner wants a SuperSprocket stealth rear sprocket, I like those too as they look awesome. Greets from The Old Mechanic, please don't forget to subscribe to my channel. ;)
Hey, i have Honda Hornet PC41 2007 year and would like to change sprockets and chaine, what size sprockets are recommended for this bike. I don't have maintenance book to know this and can't find one od internet. Please help me
Actualy thats a good question.. These days chains are having those O-rings or X-rings so dirt (sand) can't penetrade the links. But IF there is a lot of dirt on the chain, then I do clean the chain.
In my opinion, I think he tightened the chain too much, the weight of the pilot and possible co-pilot must be taken into account. In that case it would be with too much tension

Placing a piece of cardboard between chain and wheel helps to keep exhaust, rim and tyre clean from overspray.
Good tip 👍, Richard
