    I just got my first motorcycle, a 2004 Honda 599. That's what it's called in U.S., elsewhere it's the Hornet. I love it & am trying to do all the maintenance myself. Your videos have been very helpful and I have enjoyed spending some time with you. And I think the word you were looking for is tension, just a little, not too loose or too tight. You have helped me save some money and take care of my bike. Thanks much!!

    Thankyou for an informative (and humorous!) video, I own a 2002 900 Hornet, this video applies equally to my bike. Very useful. My son-in-law did the very same thing that you warned against lubricating the chain while the engine was running, he caught the gear lever, knocked it into gear and nearly lost his fingers.A lesson learnt the hard way!!

      Hi Nige, oww my goodness !! He has to thank the Lord on his bare knees ! Rightnow I am busy on the Hornet, it has a coolant leak, and a leaking frontfork seal. I am making video's about that for my RUclips channel, so in a while I will upload them. Greets from The Old Mechanic 👍🤛🏍

    The service manual says to check and measure the chain tension on the side stand.
    You do it with the wheel up. I think this may cause the chain to be tightened incorrectly. If the motorcycle is lowered, the tension will change under its own weight. For such adjustment, you should have different measurement parameters than those provided in the manual.
    Anyway thanks for video, your channel is great.

    Placing a piece of cardboard between chain and wheel helps to keep exhaust, rim and tyre clean from overspray.

      Hoi Pascal, Bedankt voor jou vriendelijke commentaar. Voor jongens zoals jij maak ik deze onderhouds-video's zonder er al te gewichtig over te doen en met een beetje humor he. Sleutelen aan een motor is mn passie, en hobby. De Hornet is echt een heerlijke motor om op te rijden en om zelf aan te sleutelen en met goede onderhoud kun je er jaren veel plezier aan beleven. Greetz The Old Mechanic. (vergeet niet te abonneren op mijn youtube kanaal he ;-) )

    A great tip for lubing the chain is to cut a piece of cardboard between the tire and the chain so when you spray the lubricant it will not get on your tire!

    What brand of sprockets and chain would you recommend for the Hornet?

    • @TheOldMechanic
      @TheOldMechanic  3 года назад +1

      Hi Macavei, GOOD question. I allways go for the DID (xring) chain, thats good value for your money. For the sprockets I allways go for JT brand. Sometimes the owner wants a SuperSprocket stealth rear sprocket, I like those too as they look awesome. Greets from The Old Mechanic, please don't forget to subscribe to my channel. ;)

    Why you didn't clean the chain before lube it??

    • @TheOldMechanic
      @TheOldMechanic  4 года назад +4

      Actualy thats a good question.. These days chains are having those O-rings or X-rings so dirt (sand) can't penetrade the links. But IF there is a lot of dirt on the chain, then I do clean the chain.

    Hallo,
    Wat een toffe filmpjes. Dit helpt me enorm met het onderhoud van mijn pas aangeschafte honda hornet 2008.
    Nu zijn mijn ketting en tandwielen helemaal versleten, graag zou ik dit ook zelf vervangen. En daar heb ik eigenlijk een paar vragen over
    Hoe de/monteer je het voortandwiel? (Hou je het achterwiel op een of andere manier tegen?)
    En kun je me de aanhaalmomenten van voor en achter tandwielen verklappen? Of nog mooier, Hoe kom ik aan de gegevens die jij op je tablet hebt?
    Groeten Bas

    • @TheOldMechanic
      @TheOldMechanic  3 года назад

      Hoi Bas, fijn om te horen dat mijn RUclips video's een hulp zijn voor jou. Het voortandwiel zit best wel vast (54 Nm), om die fatsoenlijk los tekrijgen heb je een luchtsleutel nodig Bas. Je kunt het proberen door je achterwiel te blokkeren, door stevig op de achtrem te gaan 'staan'. Wat je zeker NIET moet doen is je motor in de versnelling zetten, dan komen alle krachten op de tandwielen in de versnellingsbak.
      Wat je ook kan doen, is even naar de plaatselijke autogarage rijden en vragen dat ze die bout ff losdraaien voor jou. Vervolgens zet je die bout WEER terug vast, (zodat je hem thuis weer met een passende sleutel zelf los kunt draaien he) dan rij je HEEL HEEL rustig terug naar huis en haal je hem daar weer terug los. MAAR rij wel stapvoets he.Voor de Service Manual stuur mij ff een emailtje.

    In my opinion, I think he tightened the chain too much, the weight of the pilot and possible co-pilot must be taken into account. In that case it would be with too much tension
