As much as I agree that the portrait, unit and shield packs can be skipped (and should be for a first-time buyer), I honestly love them. The portrait and unit packs make each region of the world visually unique, with the portraits being very good at this as otherwise you'd just have two set of portraits, "European" and "Middle-Eastern", meaning that someone from Mali and someone from Mongolia would look the same. Same as Byzantine rulers and Icelandic Vikings. And the shields are a little detail I love. It makes the big historic dynasties special when they have their own unique historical coat of arms. Without it, it's like the Starks and Lannisters for GoT having randomly generated CoAs instead of their wolf and lion. But only get them if you really want them. And wait for a sale too.
I 100% see where you're coming from (and I'm likely to finish my own collection this winter sale) but I was just hoping to help complete newcomers find ways to reduce the size of the financial pill they have to swallow. I know I would never (rarely?) think to spend $300 at once on a game. So I took all the things that could possibly be skipped and cut them with a harsh but loving knife.
@@PartyElite You can find them on sale for -75% every now and then tho, which would put it down to $75. That's not as much anymore. I personally think that the portraits are must have to enjoy the game to its fullest. The music in this game is piece of art as well and I would only skip them if it would mean skipping any major expansion. The game just feels so much better when you listen to this amazing music. Although you could always just mute the in-game music and play it from RUclips or whatever so I guess it's still a valid point. They are very cheap while on sale though and I like to support the artists behind the fantastic in-game music. I agree with the unit packs, shields and the expansions you explained in your video. That gives a very good idea for a newcomer of what to get right away. I know this comment about Sunset Invasion is effectively but here’s my opinion on it. Compared to most other DLC it adds very little. No new gameplay mechanics, nothing outside of an overpowered empire that arrives whenever you set it to. Even if you don’t disable it, which most people who own it do (that should be telling), there’s a chance they won’t even show up at all. Playing as the Aztecs offers no new mechanics or unique abilities. It’s just not worth it.
I can honestly say that the game is still plenty of fun with no DLC. I know for people who have been playing for a long time that not having things like pagans, muslims, and a whole host of other features is unthinkable, but it really is a lot of fun. I played vanilla for a year before getting all the DLC up to Charlemagne in a huge sale and I had a blast. Now, with the sales coming up, it is definitely not a bad thing to start out with more, but you can still have a great time with the original.
I'd say Monks and Mystics is a must buy, at least after the first few playthroughs. Don't care about the historical accuracy of it all, it adds SO MUCH roleplay and THAT is what CK2 is all about. ALSO if you want to play with mods later on, you're gonna need it for most of the big ones.
1300 hours on record....still playing, still having fun. Will get back playing CK2 whenever a new DLC comes out....I'd like to see some CK2 videos from PartyElite although Paradox games aren't the best games to watch on YT
I would not recommend to skip the portraits and unit packs, in the end you are staring hundrets or tausends of hours on maps, units and portraits and it is good to have as much diversity as possible. And it also adds to the immersion.
I remember this video helping me a lot when I started playing the game, as this video had just been released then. And I now have over 1k hours on the game. So Thanks!
I disagree that portraits are not important to the gameplay. The first vanila portraits that came with the release are very bad, dull and laughably ethnically incorrect and lead to worse experience, especially if you have already seen any of the new portraits and are used to them . I am kind of glad, that Paradox realized that on the last DLC and now include Portraits in the new big DLCs. Also I can see the new German and Greek portraits in your demo, so you did not personally skip on them.
Oh yeah I didn't skip on everything I suggest skipping on - partly because a friend got me CK2 during a huge sale that included them (as a bday gift), and partly because I was able to buy them in parts, before the whole package was $300 at once. The thinking behind this video was to help people who are approaching CK2 for the first time ever, and are looking for any way to reduce the $ hit. It's quite a pill to swallow.
Monks and mystics also adds counsel options where the counsellors are not deployed on the field, as well as owning relics. The first part is essential if you have the reaper's due, since it means you can keep your valuable counsellors alive (such as my beautiful 24 martial wife)

@@Aaronomus You are high dude. It's basically just paying for raised artificial difficulty of the game. Conclave is the only DLC I've not bought, hell I'd choose Aztec invaders over it at any given opportunity.
@@Aaronomus To me it just seems like an annoying obstacle you have to pay attention to which constantly spoils your plans. You abolish the council, but then the vassals will rebel to reinstate it. This is ahistorical, there was no such thing as a council that told the ruler which laws to enact and definitely no wars to create one. The struggle between the powers of the king vs. nobility is rather well simulated with the crown authority I think. This is not Game of Thrones, this is medieval Europe. It's just a meh DLC with lackluster features that don't add anything of value to the game IMO.
Great guide, but for the first playthrough I think that Old gods and Rippers due are "Wait". The content is definitely great, but they makes game harder. This is not a bad for experienced player, but the game is very complex with long learning curve and additional difficulty can scare new players. Especially if you try to play as a Viking for the first time... this is very bad idea, because of the forced accession laws. I think that Legacy of Rome is the only essential DLC, because it rebalance wars, without it the game doesn't fills right. That becomes... interesting... after a while.
first of all, the base game is fun even without DLC,even if Late game is tricky. So for people short with money you don't have to have any dlc. To have a better experience I would recommend Legacy of Rome for the late game( you need retenue to prevent your empire from collapsing), and conclave for vassals management. The rest is flavour, Nice but unnecessary for beginner. As soon as you want to try anything else than a christian go for the old gods. The norse is fun to play. the other nice "flavour" DLC are Sons of Abraham Way of Life The Reaper's Due Beyond this point it is up to you, where you wanna play and your budget of course :)
The way I see It, CK II gameplay resembles Middle Ages, everything is really simple, the only difficulty coming from the fact that everyone ia stupid, religion is vital and Ruler's personalities até more important than their country. EU IV, on the other hand, plays like the Modern Age. Everything is complex, religion is losing importance, countrys are more important than rulers and Wars are not cool anymore because everybody uses guns. No wonder someone familiar tô the first becomes rather confuses with the ladder.
I would love to have a game where you could see the battle as in tw games yet not so unrealistic as it lets you control each invidual unit. You would make battle plans from the beginning and just sound the horns for them to start being implemented. Just relaxs and watch the beauty of the game.
Answer for 2022: just buy all of them through the subscription on steam, it would take about 5 years for the subscription to equal out to everything you get from it. Then when it’s all on sale for cheap buy them and cancel your subscription
I like this new format mate. Do eu4 one. I mean I have all of them since I got like 2k hours in the game and 500 of them being mp, but still could be nice to see your perspective. Btw if you want to play eu4 mp I can link you up :)
I would actually say Sunset Invasion is a good idea to have if you want to balance the game as all other Hordes attack the middle East/India or eastern Europe. There are no such threats to france, spai , and so on unless another horde does REALLY well
Respectfully disagree on some of the thoughts. In the vanilla edition I missed the realism of character improvement and character interaction, coupled with some mechanics that help your new heir to have an easier time on the throne. Also, vanilla wars can be really clumsy. So I'd say "Must have"s would be Way of Life and Conclave (to flesh out characters and for more realistic vassal interaction) Monks and Mystics (for more character customization with societies and artifacts to leave to your heir) and Legacy of Rome (retinues), as an essential for effective warring.
Way of life and Old Gods alone add a whole lot more to the game just on there own. If you’re still pretty new to the game, but have played enough to be at least competent at the game, then yeah, get those two.
I have all dlc :D But I am missing the 2 stellaris last expansions and the latest Europa Universalis stuff... geez. They could give discounts for people who have tons of dlc already...

What I did was buy one DLC every month until I had all of them. People should just buy the base game first and play that. It's a good game in its own right, and you can find out if you like playing it, which you probably will, before investing any more. Then do what I did. Or don't if you didn't like it. Couldn't be simpler. Mostly agree with your assesment, but have one category of my own for CKII DLCs. Blow up with dynamite: The music addons. Whoever made that Norse heavy metal crap should be sent to a camp to turn big rocks into little rocks for a few weeks. Do not buy under any circumstances, unless you like bad metal music.
so for a new player to start out it sounds like Legacy of Rome for the retainers mechanic, The Old Gods which i think is free, and my favorite time period in history Way of life for molding your kids, Reapers due and monks and mystics because that sounds like fun content and probably holy fury now because crusades!

To have a better experience I would recommend Legacy of Rome for the late game( you need retenue to prevent your empire from collapsing), and conclave for vassals management. The rest is flavour, Nice but unnecessary for beginner.
As soon as you want to try anything else than a christian go for the old gods. The norse is fun to play.
the other nice "flavour" DLC are
Sons of Abraham
Way of Life
The Reaper's Due
Beyond this point it is up to you, where you wanna play and your budget of course :)
THIS GUY knows what's up! Playing as the only immortal European Power: *ULM*
I would argue Legacy of Rome is a must have just because of retinues
This is a really well done video, thanks for the information.
I think the biggest surprise is, "you have time for Crusader Kings?!" ;)
Who doesn't?
BathTubNZ Time stops when I play CK2
I'm just here to find out what to expect for ck3 in the future.
Amazing video just bought all of them u mentioned except a few very expensive for a game but worth it
Now I am confused a little bit. But I think I bought jade dragon just to get to new CB. So I would recommend it if on sale.
My top 3 DLCs:
Holy Fury
Way of Life
Conclave
why does everyone has that profile pic of yours ????????????????????????????
@@YoussefMoussa996 I know! Creepy isn't it? It's actually the result of a RUclips fan takeover instigated by a FortNite RUclipsr named MaximilianMus.
How many of you played CK2 first, then played EU4, and was very confused with how it worker?
The way I see It, CK II gameplay resembles Middle Ages, everything is really simple, the only difficulty coming from the fact that everyone ia stupid, religion is vital and Ruler's personalities até more important than their country.
EU IV, on the other hand, plays like the Modern Age. Everything is complex, religion is losing importance, countrys are more important than rulers and Wars are not cool anymore because everybody uses guns. No wonder someone familiar tô the first becomes rather confuses with the ladder.
I'd say Monks and Mystics is really good because some of the commanders you can get from the Warriors Lodge are amazing
Thank you so much for this video. The wiki and steam pages for these dlcs were too vague for me.
I own every dlc but I enjoyed watching this
Thanks for this video it went from like 150 to 50.
which dlc gives you the option to not have your ruler fight on the front lines?
Theres a button saying “forbid ruler to lead armies” or something like that
with the amount of fun hours i got from this with all dlc it was still cheaper than what some would put into mmorpgs
I would love to have a game where you could see the battle as in tw games yet not so unrealistic as it lets you control each invidual unit. You would make battle plans from the beginning and just sound the horns for them to start being implemented. Just relaxs and watch the beauty of the game.
Well, Endless Legend and Endless Space kinda does that
Gates of Troy (an old game) sort of did that
Answer for 2022: just buy all of them through the subscription on steam, it would take about 5 years for the subscription to equal out to everything you get from it.
What is the DLC that lets you change the appearance of existing characters (not the originating character)?
I would actually say Sunset Invasion is a good idea to have if you want to balance the game as all other Hordes attack the middle East/India or eastern Europe. There are no such threats to france, spai , and so on unless another horde does REALLY well
867 CE? What Blasphemous words are those, unbiased overview my ass.
Fantastic guide dude! Cheers
I would watch the shit out of you playing ck2, the self created narrative and potential for disaster is perfect!
Just asking, why was there no Phantom Doctrine gameplay on Sunday? Also, are you going to upload one today?
There absolutely will be one today! Should be up in a handful of hours. Had to skip Sunday as the day job crept into my weekend more than expected.
Thanks for this! I bought the new Crusader Kings 3 but my computer cang handle the specs, so DLC will have to do
Everything Is currently on sale on steam atm, 50% off everything besides the new stuff.
how long do you guys think CK+ will get implemented to the Holy Fury?
Way of life and Old Gods alone add a whole lot more to the game just on there own. If you’re still pretty new to the game, but have played enough to be at least competent at the game, then yeah, get those two.
I started this game recently and I am considering buying the dlcs to fully play guardians of azeroth. Although I suck at the game atm
buy them when the imperial collection is on 75% sale like this year during the chinese new year
I have all dlc :D But I am missing the 2 stellaris last expansions and the latest Europa Universalis stuff... geez. They could give discounts for people who have tons of dlc already...
That would be a great idea haha. Paradox Loyalty Program
@@PartyElite Yeah, I posted about this in their forums and they said they are working on a Lyalty Program look:

Which dlc allows for a 4th job for your council?
What I did was buy one DLC every month until I had all of them. People should just buy the base game first and play that. It's a good game in its own right, and you can find out if you like playing it, which you probably will, before investing any more. Then do what I did. Or don't if you didn't like it. Couldn't be simpler. Mostly agree with your assesment, but have one category of my own for CKII DLCs.
Blow up with dynamite:
The music addons. Whoever made that Norse heavy metal crap should be sent to a camp to turn big rocks into little rocks for a few weeks. Do not buy under any circumstances, unless you like bad metal music.
The old gods is free if you make a paradox account in Crusader Kings 2 (I believe)
Can we get a pirated version of the game with all the dlcs somewhere??
ruclips.net/video/YjmTWvHQ_Ss/видео.html
You can get the old gods for free by signing up to the crusader kings newsletter
really good video, helped me alot :)
so for a new player to start out it sounds like Legacy of Rome for the retainers mechanic, The Old Gods which i think is free, and my favorite time period in history Way of life for molding your kids, Reapers due and monks and mystics because that sounds like fun content and probably holy fury now because crusades!
you can just get them all for 5 dollars a month
could you make a military guide?
Can you do a video like this for EU4?
What about Holy Fury?
Thanks you from 2020!
I bought the monks and mystics dlc simply for the artifacts. Lol
2:59 I see what you did there :)
Really useful thank you
I just bought holy fury and the customization shit no regrets :(
what game is this?
i buy all dlss and i have no ideas
It kinda annoys me how the eu4 converter and ruler designer are a dlc, they should be a free uptade imo.
I don't disagree!
Either wait for sales, or buy them as soon as they are released. This way you dont have to spend 999999999££ in one go :D
Great job .
Nice vid. Thanks alot
Sword of Islam! that was dlc from which i started this game
Allahu akbar!
The only thing i hate with playing as muslim in ck2 is that open succession system...
Thank you. But because of my financial problem,i can only afford to buy holy fury and the old god
Its good game?
Thanks for this.
I got this game last week, played it for 3/4 hours and i can say that it is too overwhelming. I'm having fun and geting destroyed in every aspect of the game.
Just keep playing and getting destroyed until you get used to it.
Start as a vassal in a stable kingdom or as a chief in Ireland.
What hoi4 mod is this?
Or download everything for free.
buy everything
Except Sunset Invasion.
@@transsylvanian9100 I guess
why buy dlc when you can crack the dlc in 5 mins
lmao
Show me how
@@puppetmaskerr ruclips.net/video/YjmTWvHQ_Ss/видео.html
HEY EVERYONE! YOU CAN GET SO MUCH DLC AT HUMBEL BUNDLE RIGHT NOW! $15 gets you tonz. (2019-08-12)
That or do what most sane people do and buy them slowly over time and before you can get them all legitimately just use steam api to get dlc cracks...
"If you like having wrenches thrown into your plans"
Cant think of anyone that actually likes being thwarted
Does anyone else find it absurd that we HAVE to have guides like this because of hundreds of dollars of dlc bloat? I've been buying these games for many years, but I lose interest the more and more they bloat. Gone are the days of releasing a single title you're proud of, just fix it 2 years later like they're doing with Stellaris.
look for torrents. you should find new patch max 2 weeks after release.
if only i knew what i was doing while playing this game lol. my friend spent a good amount of time teaching me but idk what im doing still lol. i usually play leon
