Tradition continues | The Magnus Carlsen interview after World Rapid and Blitz 2023

- Опубликовано: 5 фев 2025
- It has become a tradition now that Sagar Shah interviews Magnus Carlsen after the World Rapid and Blitz Championships. It happened in 2019, then in 2021, 2022 and now for the 4th time in 2023. This year just like in 2019 and 2022, Magnus managed to win both World titles - rapid and blitz. It was a phenomenal achievement by the Norwegian as he achieved his 17th world title. In this interview, Sagar goes over some of the best games of Magnus from this event, gets his thoughts and also talks to him about the plans for 2024 and the current FIDE World Championship cycle.

Sagar is so pure of heart. Nice to see Magnus being so relaxed around him after he looked so exhausted in the press conference.
Yeah I also like Sagar's interviews more than probably anyone else's. He's very fascinated about the people he interviews.
Problem with press conference is there are few upseting questions as they basically want some controversy for breakout ... But with Sagar he surely knows questions will be reasonable..
Not only that. He is facinated for all the right reasons, not for best youtube channels.
They were born the same year, generational pals.....
"When I feel good I never lose, almost never lose" DAMN MY GOATTTTTT TRULY! Imagine he is the only guy that can say this and do it in action too (4:32)
That was such a goat statement....maaaaaan...
The kind of homework Sagar Shah does for these interviews is insane, he went through all of Magnus games and remembered his positions and always had a relevant question to ask in a particular position. It's no wonder Magnus looks so comfortable with him.
Insane love and dedication 🤝
Sagar Shah is a class act along with the entire chessbase India team. Thanks for all you do for the chess world and its fans!
carlsen is true spoken, he never becomes too diplomatic and doesnt sound fake .
he calls spade a spade.
champion to be remembered till the chess be played on this planet.
It is important to call a spade a spade, especially these days where language is being policed and everything "offends" everyone.
He will be remembered until AI robots destroyed us and chess
Such a good interview. This is how chess interviews should be conducted. Perfect balance of "taking about chess games" and "personal life" of Magnus Carlsen. Sagar Shah hats off to you. One thing that stands out is the fact that even though Sagar is a big promoter, representer and fan of Indian chess and young Indian prodigies, he didn't ask Magnus silly questions like "please praise the Indian prodigies or how satisfied are you with Indian players?" It's all about Magnus as it should be.
This is a scoop and a gem of an interview. Sagar has managed to get Magnus to open up in this interview. Great interview indeed. I am sure this interview will be watched by entire world.
Brilliant. Rare to see Magnus relaxed in a long interview.
Often not easy to interview magnus. Best Magnus interview I've seen. Well done.
It's great to watch Magnus looking relaxed and giving an informal style interview. So much better than the awkward affairs we see where the players are put in front of a wall of cameras and journalists. This was a welcome change. Well done Chessbase India for getting it right! You have clearly built good relationships with the players over the years, and you can see how the players are only too happy to casually talk pre and post games with you. The coverage has been absolutely fantastic, it's been great getting up in the morning during the holidays in Glasgow Scotland to watch on your channel. Well done to all the team for fantastic coverage!
Thanks John
The perfect combination of Attitude, Confidence and sense of Humour, The GOAT and the World Champion Magnus Carlsen
Magnus's play in rapid was legit insane. No bad positions, not one game. That's some serious level he's been at for years. Congratulations Magnus 🎉
As always, thank you for such an insightful interview Sagar ❤
VD came so close man. Draw in magnus game. Win against fedoseev.......
@@bhikumhatre2368 VD you mean Vidit? In Rapid, Vidit lost both to Magnus and Fedoseev.
@@mychannel11231 VD was +3 to +7 for entire game against fedoseev.....bt in the end he blundered piece in time pressure. Against magnus he was equal for 99% of game bt then in time pressure with both knights magnus won
@@bhikumhatre2368the result is in the end man, i will say i draw with magnus in the opening, but that's not the result
“Equal” according to the engine does not mean draw. This is because the engine does not take into account how narrow the path is to a draw. You can be in a position where you need to find the craziest tactic to get a perpetual check, and it will be 0.00, but in human play, it is practically lost. This is why Magnus wins so many positions which the engine declares as “equal,” since he knows how to keep narrowing the opponent’s path to a draw.
Magnus recalling all his games is crazy.
Its nothing for him. He can recall games from 1960s
Such brilliance
That shows the importance of memory in chess. All great chess players have a powerful memory. I think memory and fast thinking are the two most important factors in high level chess.
@renishisrael9520 bruh he remembers those games coz hes studied them and they are crucial games. The games he played that day are random blitz games with many odd positions, and he doesnt study them, making it even more impressive
@@niranjanrajesh1058 makes sense
I can’t remember what I had for breakfast. How Magnus can recall these games is insane.
Definitely one of the best Magnus interviews out there. As many have pointed out, Magnus appears very comfortable and relaxed in his interactions with CBI, owing in a large part to the affability of the team and how well prepared Sagar is for these interviews. I don't know how much time he gets to prepare during these long tournaments, with he always seems to know the correct fact and figues. In addition, he seems to instinctively know how to balance the chess position related questions and the other ones, so as not to wear out the interviewee.
Also, Magnus himself is extremely candid and well-spoken. I like how he talks about the mindset and will. He truly appears to be his own competition, and demonstrates again and again how much better he is than everyone around at the game. Yet, he manages to inspire without sermonising or coming across as indifferent. I keep saying this, he is the true fictional hero proto-type.
You guys are the best. No one covers and uploads as much content as you guys. Love you guys.
The interview was awesome. You have such great skill to ask relevant questions with dignity. Props to you Sagar. ❤
these guys can remember every move. that in itself is impressive
There's GM,SUPER GM and then there's Magnus. The undisputed GOAT
You forgot CM (nm), FM and IM. Let’s not pretend it’s easy to attain any of these titles. Becoming a GM is special on its own and very difficult. Streamers sometimes make it seems like being a super GM is the standard everyone should be, that’s just not the case.

Let my guy eat peacefully 😂🙄🧘
I guess Magnus he himself agreed to do the interview while eating 😅.
@@manjilmanjil3003 Yes, I'm guessing that because he would leave either that same evening or early in the morning next day, so he wouldn't have any other moment for the interview. Very gracious of him to give some of his dinner time to Sagar. Magnus clearly likes him.
He clearly is ok with it and other time he will be flying probably.
It is done with the Magnus consent!
Of he is. He got a big plate
Dubov and vidit will remain unsung hero of this tournament... So close yet so far.
magnus is what the standard are.. he set the stone what possible
Dubov illed himself with the draw and vidit just choked in an imp game . Vidit was really a beast in this tournament . I just hope he doesn’t let this affect his performance in candidates . In classical vidit is a different beast .
@@songoku-jx3cbno ,that he wont bcoz thats a longer format tournament vidit is best in classical.
@@betarubber9546 yes but he will also be against the best in the world

what a wholesome moment there at the end! love to see the human stories and interactions behind the game.
Mr sagarshah, i was actually waiting for this 'tradition' interview yesterday. When magnus was exiting the hall. Then i woke up today and ' yes' you uploaded this video
Love the tradition, can't wait for 2024!
Wow. An actual interview with no cringy moments! Sagar is really good at these.
"When I feel good, I (almost) never lose" - he seldom loses even when he is sick and tired. He is truly an amazing player with an incredible amount of focus and energy, and obviously a truckload of talent. He has a crystal clear vision of the board and an innate feel for how to maneuver the pieces. He loves the game so much that he never tires of playing - online, OTB, and all time controls. Magnus Carlsen is undoubtedly the greatest exponent of chess that ever lived.
I was waiting for this interview! Sagar always gets the best interview from Magnus. Wish Amruta was also with you!
You can tell Magnus really respects Sagar. Greetings from Norway
Waited for main course to finish and started interview during dessert time😊
"When I feel good I never loose" 🗿 4:30
🥶🥶
MC seemed more relaxed than usual in this interview, so he was playing well, in the zone. Too bad they forfeited Dubov earlier since he would have tied Magnus had they allowed a draw. Would have been interesting to see Dubov play Carlsen.
@@raylopez99 Dubov was having his dream run meanwhile magnus was tired 🐐
this is the best Magnus interview I've seen - well done, very personable, insightful
The greatest , magnus he is a phenomenon, he exudes charm and conviction, the olympus
Carlsen really like the Indian chess community.
The G.O.A.T himself. Proud to be a Norwegian 🇳🇴

sagar has very stable hands holding the camera up for magnus for soo long with considerable stability
Magnus looks really comfortable talking with saggar, even more than with Levy. Sagar and Levy always have good questions and conversation for magnus.
I'm so glad I found your channel even just recently! Thank you Mr. Sagar and sending love to India's chess players and culture from USA!
This guy will always be remembered as a legend!
Here are the top 10 best chess players of all times:
Honorable Mentions
Paul Morphy
Tigran Petrosian
Viswanathan Anand
#10 Alexander Alekhine
#9 Mikhail Tal
#8 Emanuel Lasker
#7 Vladimir Kramnik
#6 Mikhail Botvinnik
#5 Anatoly Karpov
#4 Jose Raul Capablanca
#2 Bobby Fischer
#1 Magnus Carlsen
#3 Garry Kasparov
Kasparov once said, his toughest opponent was Karpov, number 5? Fischer was a genious, but he only won 1 World Championship. I guess if you're american it doesn't matter. lol
This interview had more personality, but also more chess content than all the other press conferences/media combined.
Great questions from Sagar about key positions in multiple games, and I liked that you overlaid the board on the footage so an average fan like myself can understand which game, which position they are discussing.
This was done in previous year also.
Whoever has worked on thumbnail has done great job. Quality of ChessbaseIndia video title and thumbnail is getting better day by day
10:05 His positional awareness is outstanding. The best that has ever been seen
Sagar's interviews are rare, because Magnus doesn't seem bored to death in them.
Thanks!
India loves this shy guy from a little country called Norway
"I just won by sheer will more than anything else" - Magnito 2023
Sagar is to chess journalism what Magnus is to chess.
sagar bhai the best interviewer♥
Sagar Shah thanks for showing my personal favourite magnus.
Love to the whole CBI Team. Nice coverage. Bring it on 😊
Sagar, we are so indebted to you and especially the benevolent relationship you have with Magnus. It yields quite a meaningful and authentic expose of character and the game itself. Your commentary is not to be rivaled by anyone in the world.
For a second a thought the tradition was the interview with ChessBase India!
love to India from Norway. happy new year.
Four years running…and what a tradition this has flowered into!
Sagar has taken sports interviewing to an entirely new level. Such a far cry from the inane “What will you do to celebrate?” type of exchanges we have sadly become used to.
This is the real stuff. In Magnus's personal sanctum, talking about the actual games, the critical moments, specific moves, specific emotions, specific connections with Magnus' (and Kaspasrov’s) past games; all annotated so crisply with a live chessboard board as they speak. Beautiful.
What a pleasure to see Sagar with a deep knowledge and understanding of chess and of Magnus as he gently anticipates Magnus’ inner thoughts (and moves!) while Magnus ponders how to articulate them. Incredible to watch an interviewer so finely attuned with the athlete and the game. Little surprise that Magnus himself clearly enjoys the opportunity to have these conversations. For once, he can honestly speak his “chess” mind to a resonant listener. The chess world is indebted to Sagar.
Thank you Sagar for posting articles, videos with commentary, and even the videos without commentary. These un-commentated movies too have their own charm - as if we were right there in the hall ourselves silently watching the drama unfold.
magnum wields his mind like the viking sword. he's been raiding and pillaging the chess world for some time now. keen to see for how long he'll keep this tradition going.
Great job buddy ! total honesty in compliments not overdone , good questions he chose to expand on them himself. Thank you.
You do great videos for chess fans. I really appreciate it.
Now there is a new guy entered in chess world known as half slept Magnus and trust me he just won world blitz championship 🎉
Man I wish I had that kind of memory! To be able to recall and evaluate these positions in your head after such a long day, insane.
As always, ChessBase India conducts best chess interviews
I was very upset as u guys didnt live commentary during the games. But this interview means a lot
Very gracious interview from Magnus. Thanks for sharing.

Great interview, so polite and respectful.
Amazing how he remembers all these specific games?
We’re witnessing GOATness
Nobody can stop him of he plays like that.
it's funny he can say some seemingly arrogant things with a laugh but somehow you can tell he is a genuinely humble guy. just always honest, never overconfident but never any false modesty too. truly a special being, greatest player to have ever lived. he deserves everything he has and much more to come ❤
The best tradition.
Man the amount of efforts the whole ChessBase India teams puts in cannot be described in words. Top quality content as always. Thanks to the whole team and especially Sagar bhai ❤❤
When I feel good I almost win everytime.... that's the difference it's never about the opponents it's always him...still the one the only one...the best no one close. ..overall practice make others perfect , other try to practice to win but he is perfect..#mozart #goat

I play chess bugger all 😂 but this Magnus is my favourite one player. Not only because he is number 1 but love his attitude and honesty. With him there’s no rubbish and political protocol when expressing his views. He is just genius.
Hope and pray time won’t change him.
Thank you for sharing us this interview. Peace from Australia 🙏
When I feel good, I never lose 🔥
Thank you both for this interview! Great question, interesting personal answers!
Simply extraordinary and hard to believe. He won in style without any arrogance towards his opponents. His technique is sublime, and he has something which is like a secret where only he knows what the secret is.
We are blessed to have such a player like Magnus. Nevertheless he must be also a living nightmare for his opponents. After Magnus win in the Rapid Naka made a very strange Video. He must have been biting into the wallpaper and shouting: „No,no, please not again“. Hard to digest.
Can you imagine how frustrating it would be for like Hikaru. Without Magnus alive he would have won several wc titles etc, Caruana would be the goat and the chess world wouldn't be the same.
Magnus is extraordinary and even though i find it pretty silly to write, the Goat :)
Magnus is more expressive around sarana. Energy speaks volumes
Magnus Carlsen is by far the GOAT! He dominates classical, rapid and blitz like no other player in history. He is also a class act and a great ambassador for the sport.
Fantastic! Keep up the great work CB India
19:25 not a good idea maybe to mention that series to Magnus 😅(which i g is Chatterjee vs Norway)
No. There is a new Norwegian movie called Christmas as Usual. It has Kanan Gill in it. I guess he was talking about that.
Love this channel. Love this amazing content. Thank you for doing so much for the fans. Beyond grateful for whatever you people do. Thank you so much ❤❤
Great interview! Nice touch with the diagrams showing the games.
Nice interview sagar sir the very momentous one
Magnus will probably be eating noodles from that enormous plate on a future livestream.
Great interview, thank you so much!
Only one person's interview did Sagar miss, and that is Henrik Carlsen. I would love to see him here. (Maybe, do one of the NRK journalists also while you're at it.)
