  • Vervet Forest - Season 2 - Episode 11 - The Vervet Monkey Foundation is a wildlife conservation & animal rescue sanctuary in South Africa. On this episode I return to the VMF after 3 weeks back home for the holidays and much has changed. All the babies except for Vera are now in intro enclosures with foster moms. Vera is feeling down becuase she's the only baby left in Disneyland. Dave and I also go to fetch a 4 month old orphan named Abby and she has the cutest road trip. Something that I forgot to include in this episode was an update on Tina and Lydia. Unfortunately while I was away, both Tina and Lydia passed away. Tina went shortly after I left, due to her severe injuries. Lydia, suddenly went downhill and ended up hanging on for several weeks in intensive care. It seems that the wound on her head had deeper implications than we could have ever known and she started to fade very quickly and there was nothing that could be done for her, even though Torie and Sami did everything they could. I will give a more proper update in the next episode.

      Right? Plus at 1:24 she lets one of the girls nurse on her. Must be just for comfort since they are all fixed and can't lactate. I was always curious about this especially considering the real young orphans who are just a week or two old and came straight from their mother who died. It seems like they would all be searching out the teat. However, I didn't see one baby try to nurse in season one.

      @@cherokeeheartct8633 Right. I was curiou
      s about that in Season 1. I didn't see one baby try to suckle. I especially expected the really young ones to at least try. But, there it is at 1:24 Ms Gold let her have the teat. Probably just for comfort, right? Kyle has said none of the foster mums can lactate.
      On the Arroz Marisco channel here on RUclips Ive learned that a lot of the sweet Rhesus macaque mums will let their babies latch on when they are frightened or sleepy and want to cuddle as long as they don't suckle. This is only while they are being weaned though.
      VMF is a terrific channel. Here are my go-to, first class monkey channels on RUclips:
      - Arroz Marisco
      - Kiyo
      - JW
      - Vervet Monkey Foundation
      I really suggest the other 3 channels above if you haven't experienced them yet.
      All 4 of these channels cross promote and recommend each other as they are all professional, respectful and caring towards the monkeys and NEVER do anything to manipulate, compromise or harm the monkeys like so many other disgusting channels on youtube.
      on VMF, Arroz Marisco, Kiyo and JW have been my de-stressor & entertainment during this pandemic.

    It makes my heart about burst with joy watching those babies with their foster moms. Learning to communicate and forage like real Vervets, and every so often they glance at mom like “am I doing this right?”
    With all the poaching and horrors primates around the world suffer from, it’s so soothing to know that somewhere in the Vervet Forest, these little babies are healing from their trauma and living life the way they always should have.

      HandNrocK The babies actually suckle from the moms all the time ☺️ it’s more of a comforting thing than simply for nutrition. But I’m also beginning to hypothesize that there is a possibility some of the moms begin to lactate for the babies.

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  5 лет назад +2

      HandNrocK well it’s still completely unknown if they lactate there is no proof and no studies in the scientific community regarding Vervet re-lactation, so currently we are under the assumption that they do not lactate and the orphans are merely suckling for comfort. But it is my personal opinion that it may be possible some of the mothers begin to lactate when they come into contact with the babies. But again there is no proof, this is only my individual thought from some observations I’ve made, but I have no conclusive evidence. lol just wanna make that clear so no one gets confused. Because if they are lactating frankly it would be cause to change the whole foster mother program regiment post meeting of moms. But again, it is only a theory and so far no proof has been shown in Vervets.

    Another brilliant video Kyle. Torie and Sami, so sorry about Tina and Lydia.Their injuries were too severe. I see you are devoted to your work with the sick and injured babies. Mrs. Gold grooms, protects, and nurtures her new babies. Foxy and Maisie, look so happy and healthy. Veras' beautiful expressive eyes, she does look sad without her friends All the little ones who survive their injuries are a testament to the great success you have healing and then fostering these precious baby monkeys back into a troop. Just look at little Abby, the minute she was in Dave's arms, and then cuddled by Kyle on the drive, she knew these people are safe. ;)

    The babies sucking on Misses Golds teet? I’ve seen other orphan primates do that on their surrogate moms not all let them, but I think she is doing that like a way of being comforted with a binky or their fingers. That’s pretty cool she lets them and I’m sure helps the bonding process as well. She’s such an amazing Momma! 🐵 💕 🐵 💕

      @@jcastanza 😂Flattering, but by "They" I think you mean me - Kyle. lol. I wish I had a "They" to help me with production. Yeah, it was raining and so I just went under the cover of my patio. I usually use a light but it mixes with the sun so it looks more natural. This time I had two different color temperatures of light between me and the background and a tin roof reflecting like and I set my camera at a lower F-stop (a 5.6 rather than an 11) which is usually what I do, because this time i was sitting down and had more control over focus than when I'm standing and focal point tends to shift more easily. So that lower f-stop separated me more from the background, just a little movie magic lol.

      @VervetMonkey  5 лет назад +2

      Kich 6 Some do, lol but it’s a very complicated thing to do, takes a lot of motor skills and competency for identifying areas that actually need grooming and so generally when they’re this young they just mimic, they don’t actually understand how to do it. But I’d say around a 4 months they’re starting to understand the concept and around 6 or 7 months they’re actually decent at it.

It happens with macaques, and there are a few papers out there regarding that, but nothing i've seen with Vervets and currently the VMF is under the assumption that the females do not lactate, but I am beginning to question and hypothesize that some in fact might and this may play a small roll in why certain females are more prone to adopting than others.

    Hey Kyle! Don’t know if you’ll see this comment, but worth a shot. I was watching a documentary about rehabilitating orphaned orangutans. The caretakers wore faux-fur vests for the babies to cling to. They noted that babies who clung to faux fur developed faster physically in terms of grip strength and coordination, and that they also appeared to calm quicker than babies who clung to t-shirts and blankets.
    Do you think this could apply to the vervets? It may feel instinctually comforting to them to grab onto fur vs fabric. Or do you think this could be TOO comforting, and make the babies shun foster moms in favour of caretakers?
    I also know it may be too hot where you are for fur, lol. But let me know what you think. If you wanted to try it out I would be willing to contribute to the cost of furfabric/fur clothing. All fake of course, no real pelts!

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  5 лет назад +2

      Janet Snakehole of course it would help. It’s probably a great thing for the babies. But there are a lot of factors to consider when talking about something like this and applying such tactics to our work. First of all, we are a non profit facility in the poorest province of South Africa, finding those things are gonna be hard and they will be expensive and we will have to get them shipped in and there is no such thing as the South African postal service. Also, there are tons of people constantly working with the monkeys, lots of volunteers so one size does not fit all and that would mean having to make sure everyone knew exactly how to use and take care of the vests. Considering how quickly we go through blankets alone, I can’t imagine how fast a faux fur vest would get ruined from pee and poop and milk spilling and puke etc. there’s so much more, it’s really hard for me to explain why it wouldn’t work. I love the idea; I really do, there are soooo many things I wish could be applied here. There’s no way for me to really express how difficult such a simple notion as a fur vest becomes to execute. In theory it sound sooooo simple and just a matter of money, but in reality there are so many other factors I could write an essay on it, if you came here I guarantee you’d understand in a heartbeat what I’m getting at. So the offer is appreciated, but it’s just not a sustainable option and therefor not something that can be implemented at this time. I know that might not make sense or sound frustrating but It’s just too hard to express how not simple something that sounds so simple quickly becomes when working in animal welfare in a developing nation.

    • @katyalupochev9589
      @katyalupochev9589 5 лет назад +3

      Vervet Monkey Foundation - Ah, I figured it may be slightly more complex than I first thought. Of course it would be a huge expense for the VMF to take on - and I didn’t even consider how frequently they would have to be washed! I bow to your experience :)
      If I ever find myself to be a millionaire, I will be donating heavy cash to the VMF and I’ll include ~100 customized sturdy-yet-easy-to-clean fur vests lol. Until that day I’ll continue to support with small donations and vid watching from afar. And I do hope one day I can come over to volunteer my time.
      Also - condolences on the loss of the two babies. It’s plain to see on your face how much you care for the Vervets. Try to hold onto the fact that you took them from suffering and let them spend their last moments surrounded by love, attention, and milk. That’s all a baby monkey wants and you provide it, even when it breaks your own heart. That’s true selflessness; that’s true humanity. ❤️

      @VervetMonkey  5 лет назад +1

      Crystal and Robert Dominguez eh, well first of all that’s all conjecture. And as much as I’d love to play along, it never really helps in the end. We can assume as much as we want but we’ll never know the full story of what happened. It’s just the way these things go. But that being said, I’ve now seen a lot of situations where a baby is found alone (there is no statement that Abby was found alone, we don’t know what happened to her or her mother) and in the situations where a baby is found alone it’s never the same scenario. So a baby could simply have been lost from its troop or it could have been abandoned by its troop, also once the babies are a certain age and more independent the moms become less concerned for them. But sadly it seems very rare that a troop “comes back” for a lost baby. I’ve seen instances of people sitting for hours watching and waiting and the troop doesn’t return. It’s a weird situation and it’s hard to know exactly what’s happening because every time it happens it’s under completely different circumstances. But sadly it just seems like a lot of the time the troop doesn’t come back once they’ve moved on. I think it has something to do with the fact that Vervets run very specific circuits over the coarse of a week and because of conflicting interests with other troops I the vicinity, a troop will rarely visit the same location in a frequency that is outside of their normal movement pattern. Frankly a whole study could be done on infant abandonment in the Vervet community. I’d be fascinated by it. Unfortunately there are very few detailed studies on Vervet behavior these days. Most of our knowledge comes from research done in the 70’s and 80’s

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  5 лет назад +2

      Teri Barr because it would be worse to the process to leave someone behind who is ready to move on simply for the sake of a younger monkey. When you’re dealing with 30 orphans in a season going into troops it’s about the process and the timeline and keeping one baby behind somewhere for a couple of days alone isn’t really that big of a deal. I understand if you apply complex human feelings and reasoning to the animal then it gets complicated. But you have to look at it from a scientific perspective, and sometimes a little struggle in the moment is worth a whole lot more success in the end. You know what I mean? What I get from your question is that you feel bad for her, but you can’t let your own emotions cloud judgement and potentially hinder the progress of the others. The question then becomes is it worse to leave one young monkey with people for a few days until another shows up. Or is it worse to hold another monkey back simply to force it to be friends with the “sad” one. And how will that choice then reflect future decisions and the integration process for all the babies, especially since even if you held another baby back who is older, they’d never end up in an enclosure with Vera, because it wouldn’t work out with the age difference and the moms willingness to accept the babies. So you see? It’s not so simple what we do here and most of the time you cannot make welfare decisions based on personal emotions, we must consider all factors and make educated decisions based on the scenarios at hand.

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  5 лет назад +2

      Well thats complicated. We are an animal sanctuary, so technically everything we do goes to the animals. Paying a staff member is money going to the animals because it keeps that staff member working for the monkeys, buying dewormer is for the monkeys, feeding volunteers is essentially helping the monkeys because it allows the volunteers to continue working to help the monkeys, buying food for the monkeys is money being spent on the monkeys. Unfortunately we don't give any of the monkeys a perdium, so they can't spend it all in one place, but generally Dave and Josie decide how the monkeys should spend their money and so far the monkeys seem pretty pleased with it.
      If you're interested in donating, but you are concerned about how your money will be spent you can always email info@vervet.za.org and tell them that you are going to donate and you want the money to be spent on something specific and they will help you out.
