The reason this show works for guests the likes of an actress like Margot Robbie and a social scientist like Malcolm Gladwell really comes down to the skill of the interviewer. He and his staff do the homework necessary to ask excellent questions and then give the guest the space to answer them without interruption. That’s the lost art in most talk shows these days. The hubris of the host. Not this one. It is intensely guest-focused. Not to mention, his outstanding ability to gently always pivot the guest from their pain back to the questions. Make no mistake: this is a skill. They trust him and always push beyond their perceived threshold because they allow him to maintain the momentum of conversation, thus focusing away from the thoughts of, as Margot Robbie said, “That’s so effing hot.”
The simplicity of the show allows the interviewer to go very deep. Even if the subject has nothing to really say, you know you will be entertained by their physical reaction to capsaicin. He knows people will get their bare minimum, so swing at every pitch hoping for a home run.

@@Ryan1Twice Clearly (out of sheer excitement), I commented before actually watching the video to see what he was promoting. Nonetheless, excited to dig in to his new work, too!
I’ve said this for a long time. Computer games absolutely have a big impact on someone’s ability to think and reason. Everything in moderation, the traditional aids to learning are all of value to some degree but the more we think outside the box and explore alternative ways of learning the quicker we’ll advance as a species. (Without forgetting the lessons of the past of course).
Interesting. I have always thought the opposite. From my admittedly limited experience playing video games, it always seemed like the video game was doing most of the cognitive work for me. That's why you can play for hours; there's just so much stimulation for little mental effort. Furthermore, the reasoning behing the theory that video games makes people smarter doesn't make that much sense. If each generation has been getting smarter, doesn't that go against the finding that video games have any impact (unless there was a significant increase in IQ when video games were developed)? I.e., if video games made people smarter, then there would be an increase in the increase of IQ around the time that video games became maintstream.
He was mistaken though when he said that IQs are just getting higher and higher. This is called the Flynn Effect, and it has been reversed in this most recent generation (it also dipped in the 70s, but then went back to rising). Whether or not this has anything to do with video games is a complete unknown though.
I thought this was gonna be a dull episode bc it doesnt have the usual million views but wow, kudos to hot ones for bringing a breath of fresh air on the interviewee seat. This feels more like an intellectual discussion/podcast than a casual interview, and with what little physical reaction he showed from the heat, he makes up for with his witty comments on the hot sauces. Sean always brings great questions to the table but this is even better bc they are reciprocated with lengthy and intelligent answers which definitely satiated me after seeing eps with actors giving 1/2 sentences answers. I feel like sean personally asked to interview him as a fan which if he did, thank you this was great!
Have you seen the one with Neil deGrasse Tyson? I don't remember for certain but I think that may have been the episode that got me hooked on this show.

Malcolm and I went to the same high school, about 15 years apart. His mom is an absolute legend/hero in town there. In the high school gym, there is a banner at the stage right side that features his name for a running record he set while a student there. After discovering the book "The Outliers" I began to realize the town is covered in Gladwell family history. When my kids would eventually attend the same high school, I was pleased to see the banner is still in the same place. Records may be getting broken all over the place, but after 40 years of small town athletes, Malcolm still holds his.

I first read that as Weasel. I thought that was pretty harsh, but I've never heard of him ( I had to google), then I laughed at my misread... ;-)
Gladwell's book David and Goliath made me realize just how GOOD books can be. This man inspired me to read more and want to learn more. He has such a knack for finding and sharing the most interesting stories in a way that's so enjoyable to read. What a guy.
Million Dollar Murray is an excellent paper he wrote on homelessness a while back too. I quote it here and there. Especially remarking the time that's passed since it's been written
.. he's a well thought out man.
The way he thinks is so complicated and beautiful.
@@allanonamiss4224 I believe he included the Murray story and many other excerpts of his articles and papers in his book What the Dog Saw
Who got this man on? They need to be given reward, as i can see more people like this coming on now.
This is the crossover we didn’t expect but also didn’t know we needed
Wiggles
I love watching brilliant authors chitchatting casuals. His books are awesome.
When Malcom Gladwell said “my most meaningful flip flops are on people” I actually teared up. Like - why is this hot wings interview SO MOVING AND INSPIRING???? Goodness.
Quite possibly the first guest to be more composed than the host the entire time
Nah, there are a lot. The Trevor Noah one was cool as ice.
he was taking tiny nibbles tho. his wings were 99% intact upon finishing
@@sommelierofstench he’s a Canadian raised by a British father. Expecting him to stuff his throat is very culturally unrealistic.
@@dearthofdoohickeys4703 it’s a show about eating. fella approached the wings like he was trying to eat a single kernel of corn off the cob. he wasn’t getting much of the sauce. that’s the idea of the show no matter what your culture or background is. he’s a smart guy, he didn’t want to suffer. that’s his choice. i’m just pointing out that he didn’t really experience much hot sauce so it makes sense that he didn’t really lose his composure.
LOL Malcom Gladwell chirping Sean about his spice tolerance is gold.
Glad to see they're getting more diverse with their guests. I might be wrong, but I think this is the only dedicated author on the show thus far.
I thought the same thing. It makes me want to see more authors, journalists, athletes, and politicians.
@@queerquill Definitely, but I think it's gotta be a tough sell getting many people who don't consider themselves "cool kids" to come on a RUclips show and eat hotAF wings in order to promote their product. If you've never seen or heard of the show before, it would sound like a ridiculous way to do an interview. Especially if you have a busy schedule and actually need to function later...
@@BlakeSuperior_Beats Malcolm is obviously pretty smart, and thus has chosen a smart publicist. Don't underestimate what the more intellectual crowd are into, or what the "unintellectual" are watching. And honestly a spicy lunch isn't gonna fuck you up for the day. And he didn't really go too hard on those wings, perhaps in anticipation of how it might affect him later in the day.
@@queerquill yeah, I think politicians would have a tough time keeping their veneer on screen if they had to plow through the wings of death. Would definitely be entertaining.
This guy is *fascinating*. So interesting and intelligent. He has so much to say about everything and I want to hear it all. I could listen to him all day.
*Phenomenal* episode!
You can listen to him all day. It's called Revisionist History. Haha
Nice profile pic
Clearly, this show needs more guests like Malcom.
Malcolm Gladwell: "If there's one thing people are not, it's dumb."
Also Malcolm Gladwell: is willingly on Hot Ones (though to be fair, he did shockingly well)
Seriously though, I'd love to see more authors on here.
Statistcally, half the world is dumber than the average person.
I didn't know who this was but that's why I check out every episode, was very good interview.
"A *person* is smart. *People* are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." -Agent K, with the wisdom of the ages...
Never expected Malcolm to be on this lol
Me neither, bro.
And I love his attitude, "even if if someone is getting your wrong, they're still getting you."
I love that you are putting Authors on here now, and not just singers and actresses/actors
I have no idea who this guy is and I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. That's what I love about Hot Ones. They make you appreciate even stragers
He’s a very good author who is interviewed on late night shows even.
I thoroughly recommend his books, especially 'The Tipping Point'
You have got to learn who he is and consume some of his work. I can promise you'll be glad you did. Malcolm is such a fucking G!
@@MA-zg2pz His book Outliers will blow your mind. Any time your hear someone say 'I got my 10,000 hours in' comes grim that book on reference on how long it takes practicing or performing a task to become next level proficient.
LOVE the vibes Malcom brings. So wise. So calm. Handled it like a boss
I've never heard of Malcolm before, but this episode was so entertaining.
The tipping point is so good! Hopefully you'll get a chance to read/hear it one day.
His books are kind of repetitive, but they teach good things and can apply to several different situations. I enjoyed his book outliers.
Tipping point
Outliers
Talking to strangers
Blink
Are all very good . He has very interesting takes on many important topics. And his voice is great on audible at 1.15x speed 😅
even if you don't read much at least check out his audiobooks! they're so fun and wonderfully written!!
@@AJay-hp7oe lol 1.5x speed is a great hack. I'll give it a listen.
One of the more surprising guests on this show!

Surprisingly boring
@@dylansmith3158 yeah you're right it needs more Fortnite and million-dollar sunglasses
My favorite Hot Ones ever. The conversation was incredible, and I love the glint in his eye the whole time.
I saw that he was the guest & thought to myself "Come on, Malcolm, you've got that Jamaican in you!" & he did not disappoint. Good episode!
Beginning of the show, Malcolm: I'm part of the 20 percentile...
End of the show, Malcom to Sean: I'm a little concerned for you. Sleep it off.
😂
He was tellin Sean not to switch up on him when really he was the one schemin 😂
Malcom is the most likeable smart person on earth. I love how he was checking in on Sean to make sure SEAN was ok.
Mad respect for his reaction on "da Bomb". "Gee, that's nasty". No whining, no screaming, no walking around and punching the air, this man is a BEAST. Not even a curse word or a harsh comment. Held his composure VERY well. Kudos all the way.
The only time I’ve ever heard Malcolm swear was when he was quoting someone else. It’s not that he’s above swearing, he’s just eloquent enough to expressive himself without it.
And yes that is a backhanded statement.
He was nibbling that shit like a pussy
I've never even heard of this guy and by the end I'm extremely interested in his work because of his personality and the interview. Sean has a great talent.
Me too
you should read his book David And Goliath
His books are so good!
Gladwell: "I'm in the 20th percentile with spice."
Gladwell: "Most people aren't stupid."
Judgement rating: humble but dubious.
Sean: "How are you with hot wings?"
Malcolm: "I'm in the 20th percentile."
lol....that is SUCH a Malcolm Gladwell answer....
Who to trust? Award winning social scientist, or random RUclips commenter? The mind boggles.
@@blurbledurblechurble Don't discount it too fast. I have the same background as gladwell: journalism & psych. And a lot of the cognitive theories he writes about, points out the irrationality behind most people's decision making and group thinking (inc mine, his, all of us). That's why WW2 is such an irresistible topic for his new book. Academics tend to miss general common sense wisdom. And he knows that it pays you nothing to alienate your audience.
Said as much at 18:48 _""Are you trying to appeal to a very narrow band of specialists, or are you trying to appeal to the casual reader?"_

@@blurbledurblechurble Never claimed to be the same person. His 3rd book is everything I said.
That narcissistic people make poor choices in mgmt based on social cues rather than capability.
18:53 He was *very* careful in his word choice to not insult general audiences, who pay his bills
20:48 He acknowledges that he, like all of us, myself; makes impulsive first impressions.
Wasnt pickin at you dude. Just pointing out his own statements 🤷♀
"The one thing people are not, is dumb."

So yes people are not dumb.

Well, even Gladwell gets things wrong from time to time. lol
Yes! I'm so ready to see more people outside of singers, actors, and comedians. Please, please, please shoot for more writers and directors
Ooh directors is such a good idea
Same i really loved this
New favorite interview. I really like how Sean and Hot Ones always has well thought out questions but now I'm recognizing having someone that can reciprocate with great answers is awesome. I want more interviews with academia and scholars now!
I think that “That’s quite hot” clip could be used at the end of every episode and I would giggle.
I didn’t think I’d enjoy this episode when I clicked on it, but I’m surprised that this was one of my favorites, so far, this season.
ive got to appreciate Malcom's abililty to share compelling ideas with every question. Now im interested in diving in some of his work.
Good grief. His reaction to Da Bomb was so minimal that I didn’t even realize they’d past it until after the fact.
Same!
Indeed, I am trying to think who plowed through the 10 with nothing more than a 'its getting hotter' comment. No theatrics, no sweats, no nothing. Stone cold hot wing killer that guy.
@@yellowwducky no hate on Malcolm but it’s likely the tiny bit size that caused the minimal reaction. He didn’t really take a normal size bit more like a nibble but still awesome guest love Malcolm
Yeah, he “nibbled” his way through that one…
@@garyguzman630 there have definitely been some more shameful nibbles on the show before but yeah his are pretty tiny.
That was a good one, I stopped watching for a long while because of the “A class celebs “ great to see someone really interesting on here again!! Handled it like a unit!
Absolutely shocked to see Malcolm on here. I love his books and recommend ‘David & Goliath’ to everyone. Great to see Hot Ones expanding its range of guests beyond stereotypical celebrities. Great stuff as always!
Love love LOVE him! He’s one of my favorite authors! His latest book Talking To Strangers is so good (especially the audible version). I highly recommend it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lol his latest book is the one he’s on the show promoting! I agree talking to strangers audiobook was fantastic though
More views means dull 😂
* Malcolm rocks. An incredible guy on so many levels. Handled these sauces likes Boss.
I've never heard of this guy but I'm a total fan after one short interview. Thanks man!
Malcolm is one of my favorite human beings on the planet. Thank you...THANK YOU, for having him on.
Love LOVE bringing pop academics and other types of people on. Give me Bill Nye or David Attenborough or someone like Adam Savage on here.
Adam Savage or Kary Byron would be awesome!
Have you seen the one with Neil deGrasse Tyson? I don't remember for certain but I think that may have been the episode that got me hooked on this show.
This was one guest I never would've guessed coming on, but am very pleased to see. *More!*
Honestly, I didn't know who he was before, but I loved this conversation. I really hope you expand your porfolio and invite more authors and critical thinkers. This was great.
I love when the interviewees come in and seem to think this is going to be just another interview with bonehead unresearched questions and then gets pleasantly surprised by Sean's intelligence and preparedness.
edit: I would like to see Stephen King on the show.
I freaking LOVE that this was a literary, rather than cinematic or musical guest. i LOVE that it seemed to be from an entirely different genre.
Thank you for sharing that. What is his mom known for?
@@sreeraj2581 her name is Joyce. She was very active in the community, but in 1980 when all of her kids had left home, she recognized that there was little to no assistance available in the area for therapy/counselling. She took a University course, and then began working as a counselor supporting the area. Thousands of people's lives are enriched by her legacy. Around 2009, the counselling center she helped establish had grown enough that they needed to move to a new building. When that was done, they named the building after Joyce, and inside is a plaque with her picture and story. Legend stuff.
normally if people nibble on the wings like this comments are going crazy but u can tell ppl got nothing but respect for this guy. i love it
I wouldn't be as suspicious if they hadn't edited in loud biting sounds
that last one he just took straight breading, no chicken flavor buffer. thats just straight sauce and bread and wasnt phased. 10/10
That’s because people mistake why a show like this is popular. This show isn’t popular because it’s people eating hot wings, that just gets you in the door. It’s popular because they’re great interviews and Sean Evans is a charismatic dude.
Real Opinion: Every single one of ya'll agreed that Malcolm made our day notch' better:
I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed listening to Malcolm - what an entertaining, gentile, intelligent guest! Thoroughly enjoyed this episode!
is this the most composed guest that's ever been on hot ones? the man was calmly sipping milk, but he wasn't even breathing out of this mouth at the end. savage
Halle Berry certainly deserves to be in the conversation.
I mean yea, he barely ate the wings, he barely tasted the sauce.
Just like Elizabeth Olsen
I love this guy he gives me a Bob Ross vibe

This show just got enormous appreciation from me for this guest. Keep up. We need the voice of these people.
I know it makes sense, but he is so well spoken. This will be one of the most underrated episodes of hot ones for sure
I don't think I've ever seen a guest so casually go through Da Bomb
In fairness, he was taking tiny nibbles. Not that it really matters. He’s actually on to promote a book, not blow his head off with hot sauce.
