    I'd check for two things:
    1) Compare the wiring of both guitars. There's a chance your Prestige model has a treble bleed whereas the cheaper model doesn't, and that might be why it doesn't sound as good to you. Some people complain that it saps some of their high end. It's easily removed anyway if it turns out it has one and the other doesn't.
    2) Make sure the pickups are the same height on both guitars.

Cheap guitars are made of lots of bits of wood glued together and covered in Bondo. A lot of people don't know this but in the mid to late 2000s Ibanez used old growth tone Bondo on all their sub 500.00 guitars. Tone is in the Bondo.

Must be the colour, red is faster than blue (purple), so the harmonics scream along..... Maybe the contrasting pickups and knobs - if you look good, you'll play good....
Both totally useless ideas, but reading the comments, anything I'd thought of had already been mentioned.
Could also be unconscious expectations. Your brain might be expecting something more as you paid 5 times the price (although pick-up upgrade must have diluted that a fair bit). I get that with my Elite Strat. I think I partly just expect more from it as it cost a lot. I still like it, but don't know how I'd feel if I had a Squire Strat as well.
I had a 90's Washburn that was my first guitar. It was reasonably priced for the time, but sure what an equivalent would be. It played really well and looked great (black with maple neck). Only sold it as I'd bought a few. Kinda wish I'd kept it, but really happy with my current stable of guitars.

    Interesting...
The action could be a factor - letting the notes ring out more?
My RG350 is great. It's a bit like having an old car - I don't care where I park it, so I can just enjoy it without any stress!
...oh, and it could also be the pickups themselves - they are not all equal. Dave Mustaine famously had a Seymour Duncan JB which sounded better than all his other JB pickups. That's what they modelled his new Thrash Factor signature bridge pickup on.

My Cheap Guitar which I absolutely love is the Squier ShowMaster HH. I believe it’s modeled after Kirk Hammets Black Skull & Crossbones with the ☠️ inlays.

It could be the wiring, pots or/and output jack...Pickup height and polepiece height's

finish + bridge+thicker neck+rosewood vs maple all adds up. I bet the trem is a huge part.
My £1000 YJM Strat always has sounded very hard and bright. Basswood is NOT expensive so probably not a factor.
I bet the trem is a large factor
raise the pickups a tad ?

Maybe the 370 is a direct mount although the Prestige has a pick guard?
I've always preferred San Dimases over So-Cals for that reason.

Great vid. I love my Infinity loaded Jem Jnr. If I were to change the sound I would go for more harmonics. Also a more JS sounding bridge. But TBH, the online amp settings make a huge difference to the tone.

My collection is all cheap guitar lol. My favourite is my Ibanez 470 DXL or whatever its called. the metallic blue with black hardware Floating bridge, that i got for $100 and had to fix to be able to play it. My most expensive is my Fender 87' Japanese E series that I don't really like because the single coils but when you want that strat sound I guess. My latest is a PRS SE because I am not rich. beautiful guitar in the faded blue burst but I prefer the Ibanez speed neck or whatever its called.
My worst is a Chibson I bought back when nobody knew what they were. Complete piece of junk but I might try to play with it and get it set up correctly with decent pickups and see what happens. Not losing anything if it doesn't work. Oh and I just bought a Frankenstrat that I haven't tried yet but I would say it will just hang on my wall since it is another Chinese knock off. Who knows, it might sound ok when I get it. Considering Eddies Frankenstrat was a partcaster anyway I can't feel too bad.

you might be onto something, i have 2 ibanez pegasus limited edition guitars (i think equivalent to rg370's) and they both play and sound great even with the stock pickups. i love my rg550 and the rg655 but those pegasus are fun. saying that the white pegasus has flaws in it and tbe blue one is flawless. both made in indonesia.

another thought as well when im playing the cheaper guitars im not so delicate with the use of the floyd etc lols im not as worried about damaging it.

I like that it actually doesn't have a matching headstock. I think that looks really cool on solid color guitars, especially the ones with more outrageous finishes. It makes the guitar look properly 80s, just like they were back then. When it comes to the tone, really check the pickup height in comparison to your 3550mz and be really, really pedantic about it if you want to try matching the 3550mz with your 370.

Take out the zero stop bar from the prestige and do a compare.

    • @ACMusic

The zero bar is out now, and it's a MUCH better bridge for me!

  • @pyratoothNL
    @pyratoothNL 2 года назад

I think the wood is the smallest factor in tone. Your own fingers have a much greater influence, then pickups, electronics and strings. I've done pickup replacements on a few cheap guitars now, mostly to improve output but also the tonal range, like getting highs to pop out more or sensitivity to harmonics. They will help bring more out of the instrument.(from my experience I've found the characteristics of neck pickup models seem to differ more widely than bridge).
The quality of cheap guitars is so good now, if you have a good basis (especially the neck), you can replace pickups and tuners and upgrade an instrument to something that would cost you 2 or 3 times as much.
Tremolo systems and bridge are where you really notice the difference; cheap guitars will have crap trems that don't stay in tune. But get a cheap hard-tail and you have a platform that you can upgrade to your liking.

Am I dreaming or is the body of the prestige massive compared? But when you play they look the same size. A video trick maybe if you are turned a little to your right.

There's no such thing as tone in high gain amp + high output pickups setup. You don't have the right to talk about tone if you're using that kind of setup.
Trust me, i've been through it.

Who DECIDES to move to Sheffield voluntarily???? Just kidding! 😀 I'm sure it's a beautiful city these days! Just bought a Neon Purple Genesis RG550. Should be arriving today. One of may favourite guitarists in the '80s was Steve Vai! I wanted a Jem FP, I still want to get one!
