Loved this episode! I can totally relate to Mari’s struggle and frustration with fertility. Also, now that I am pregnant, I have SO much more empathy and gratitude for what my mom must have gone through. She and I have always had a good relationship, but I don’t think I ever understood even a fraction of what she sacrificed for me until now.
Unfortunately, my relationship with my mom did not change after I had my daughter (4 years) but I did have some realizations about what she must have been going through and that forced me to give her some grace.
I never really comment but I have to say the part about fertility made me feel uncomfortable. I would have appreciated you jumping in reflecting on that part or adding a warning. We might not have the entire back story and Mari might have received an infertility diagnosis but you cannot say you’re having fertility struggles when you’ve only been ttc for 4 months. It takes 6m to 1y on average for a couple to successfully conceive so 4 months is not that long. Even though it might feel like the longest time ever, I do get it. I wouldn’t use the infertility label around when people have to go thorough procedures and IVF and everything. It took us 14 months to conceive naturally and I found that part of the interview a bit triggering.
I'm sorry you felt that way!! As someone who hasn't been through any form of fertility struggle myself, I don't personally find it's my place to tell Mari that she "isn't having struggles" since it's only been 4 months, if that's not how she feels!! But I understand where you're coming from and appreciate your feedback!! 💕
I'm at this point in the interview and unfortunately am not going to listen to the rest. This was medical catastrophizing and self diagnosing to an extent that was very disturbing. This was also an example of over-affirmation. Agreeing that Mari is experiencing infertility because that's how she feels when she's only been trying for 4 months is co-catastrophizing with her. I don't think this was the intent but my god this whole framing of infertility is not just medically inaccurate, it's unbelievably disrespectful to those who are experiencing actual infertility - meaning trying for more than a year or receiving a diagnosis.
