Shifter: How I Became a Kid Photographer

  • I wish I could unveil all the images I made as a "kid photographer." Those images are semi-sensitive and were never intended for public consumption via RUclips. When you set the table with a Hasselblad, 80mm, and roll of TRI-X, not to mention total control over the shoot, you are setting yourself up for maximum success. I have a box of prints in my closet, 17x22s, at least fifty of them, reflecting and encapsulating my seven years as a portrait photographer. I'm not known for blowing my own horn, but I can say with relative certainty, that these are good images.
But how did I get there? How did a scarf-wearing, pseudo-hipster douche become such a GOD of portraiture? Was it a master plan? Did I get specific training? Well, tune in and find out.
Also, this film came to me via a Q&A question. I realized something. Why not break the Q&A questions into their own films? This way I can expound, extrapolate, and give them the credit they deserve without running into the hour-long film times.

Is there anywhere we can see more of your kid photography? Your unique perspective on these things is so intriguing, thanks for putting it out there. Good luck in Antarctica!

Trying to figure out how I can share a few. Will wait till I'm back from S. America. Those images were made so long before I was doing YT and with pictures of children people need to be very careful. I do have a box of prints I might be able to share a few.

Oh, awesome vid as usual Dan.....laugh a minute. I just feel so inspired when you talk about doing something your way, and not following the heard........and the examples you give, like putting effort (and fee) into the picture taking, not the print follow-up, makes total sense - but wow, so against the trend. Safe trip down south.

Luckily, most photographers conform. Their heads are filled with the thoughts of others and not their own. The downside is that sometimes the thoughts in your head might not work for anyone else.

Working on that. Those images were made long before YT, so I have to be careful about what I show. I want to show them all but no way I can do that.

I heard you tell the story once before of how you fell (or should I say "nudged?") into taking kids portraits on film, and I think it's awesome. I have a technical question for you; how did you get documentary style pics with kids on the Hassy?? Were you pushing the film two stops? I can't get a sharp picture of my kids on my Rollei unless I'm at least 1/250, and wide open at 2.8 there is always a lot of potential for out of focus pics (I drink a lot of coffee, so that may have something to do with it : / ). Also, how did you handle low light situations? Or did you gently steer the kiddos towards the better light? (ie windows?). Asking because working in the dead letter department of the post office is getting OLD, and I need to get some of those sweet, sweet "pro-sumer kid's photography" dollars!

l practiced with the Blad for a long, long time. I could even pan at slow shutter speeds with it, which I did many times. For low light there was the Leica. But Blad and Rollei are very different. Blad is much faster in my opinion.

Daniel-san, you're much smarter and skilled than I, (although we have a lot of the same interests). Like you, I have a fairly long photo-editorial background in fly fishing. Never have I sold an image at $11.00 because "Billy" sold at $12.00 (I cracked-up hard...It's so true). Anyway, I've been up and down the western coastline of South America (where you will probably be jumping-off, heading to Antartica). I have never found a way to have someone send me there...I'm envious! Look forward to your visual interpretation. Sweeeeet!
Oh I forgot...My backup camera "now" is a ski mask.

I became a 500% better photographer after I had kids. The downside is my current amateur portfolio is basically just that. Kids. Not much time for anything else.

Love your torture techniques 😂, i stopped doing weddings too, not that i did many , but your right its not a one day thing so much before and after , and i dont have a backup if i get sick. Lots of stress . I love that doco approach to child photography, unposed are the best shots. I do few family shoots every now and then and prefer to a park or other fav place for family and keep it loose, and candid.

Wow... we learn something new every day. I've been following your channel for a while now and had no idea you did this type of photography. I just Googled "Daniel Milnor portrait photographer" and one of the first things that came up was a link to a Creative Live you had done on the subject. How cool!!! I tuned in on a couple creative lives early on. One being Zack Arias, who was actually a mentor of mine for a short while here in Dallas before he moved back to Atlanta. I feel I've missed the boat so to speak as far as doing photography in the professional world (I've been told I could do so if I wanted to), and sometimes that's depressing. I just mainly do it as a hobby now and create my own little projects and blurb books. Anyway, love the channel and what you bring to RUclips!
