Nuclear Wasteland Dev Progress: Radiation, Fallout & Fungi | OppenMiner Dev v0.1.8

  • Development Update for my Minecraft Mod called OppenMiner.
Recently, I've started working on an actual nuclear wasteland that will be dynamic and evolve around the player as they try to survive. As you can see, currently I'm working on some fungi slowly growing out of the rubble as well as a basic fallout mechanic inluding (for now cosmetic) radiation that can be noticed by white specs / flashes of light as well as a geiger counter sound that's dynamic based on how much radiation is around the player.
Going forward, I want to implement actual adverse radiation poisoning as well as the mushroom cloud rising further and spreading out over a large area, slowly getting carried away by the wind and falling back down to earth as fallout.
In the future I want the nuclear wasteland to include different irradiated plants, fungi and mutated mobs as well as overhanging charred blocks randomly crumbling and falling down so the player gains a sense of a world in decay even some time after the initial nuke explosion is over.
Download will be available once the mod is further in development. I'll keep posting updates on the chanel in the meantime

I don't believe this is something you'd see irl, but camera sensors do get affected by high-energy gamma rays given off by intense radiation sources. The particle hits the sensor and maxes that pixel or set of pixels for a moment, making it appear white. Human eyes are not sensitive to gamma radiation in the same way, so while you might see a blue glow from a radiation source, you shouldn't be seeing white sparks. If you are, you're probably dead before you recognize them for what they are.

Fantastic job on recreating the best atomic explosion in Minecraft! To enhance the experience further, consider these suggestions:
    1. Ensure the initial flash of light maximizes brightness instantly, causing nearby objects to ignite before the shock wave, altering their texture with a charred/darkened counterpart using a smoke effect (Thermal radiation). Entities too close should perish instantly.
    2. Introduce an instantaneous release of high radiation within a certain distance of the explosion (Initial radiation).
    3. Sync the explosion sound with the shock wave, with maximum intensity at the start, followed by attenuation and a diminishing background sound.
    4. Make the "sound" of radiation audible only through the player's inventory object, the geiger counter. This adds suspense, as players won't gauge radiation levels without the item, yet still feel its effects.
    5. Opt for a crater that's wider than deep, allowing better exploration of the area. Instantly remove any blocks or entities within the fireball radius.
    6. Consider aligning the condensation cloud parallel to the standard Minecraft clouds for a visually cohesive effect.

At Chernobyl, they found a new fungus that used the radiation to fuel its metabolism. They noted how it was black, just like the frogs had become, to protect themselves from radiation. They also said that it is possible to use this fungus to protect people from radiation. This could be a very neat concept to add into this mod.

    Two requests:
    1) Let the Geiger counter be a separate item.
    2) Let radiation be a really working mechanic with a progression bar bat and strong debuff effects when radiation accumulates. Accordingly, it would make sense to use a Geiger counter to determine the most irradiated places. I suppose then it would make sense to add cleansing blocks to restore the land.

IDK why but you really nailed the eerie vibe/stillness of life after an explosion that a lot of other mods miss with corniness. What a curious mod! I can imagine it being very fun: in multiplayer - just obliterate an entire faction base lol Looks fantastic so far!
    Some ideas if I may:
    - Radiation harms the player
    - Craftable Geiger counter and Hazmat suit
    - A custom world generation option, with many fallout sites - i.e. the player tries to survive in a post-nuclear apocalytic world
    - A gameplay option where bombs fall randomly every once in a while (like those natural disaster mods) so players have to scramble their base and get to safety if one it's about to be drop near then
    - Perhaps allow certain blocks, like obsidian, to shield from radiation and damage so players can build bunkers
    - Naturally generated uradium ores, to craft the bombs with
Best of luck with the mod!

If mobs gradually got more and more mutated as time went on after the initial explosion, that could be a very fun way to show the passage of time. (If you’re going for the more sci-fi and Fallout style radiation.) Plus fun and cool mob designs.
But in the end it’s your mod. Don’t feel pressured by anyone giving suggestions.

It really looks like you will take a realistic approach to the nuclear explosion, thing almost all other mods in Minecraft (that has a nuclear bomb ofc) barely tackle, or only one or two elements, even then...
I'm hoping to see something that is both realistic and fun to play around, while dreading just the horror of what happened. And not just the "fantasy horror monster booh ahah". Real. Horror. It is no joke after all. It happened in our world...

Reminds me of the Trinity addon mod for NuclearCraft in 1.12.2, except this is better due to what you have planned already.
I suggest being sure that however you go with a radiation implementation, that you test it on a server with Spark installed, and monitor if your implementation of it causes harmful effects to the performance with the more chunks generated, and the more chunks loaded(especially when loaded by players who can be affected by it), and be careful if you implement it as chunk based, and if you implement it as block based as well, both have the possibility to accidentally turn out to be server/world corrupting if initially implementation is done poorly, as many problems can come from radiation values in areas. Some worse than others, some repairable, some not. I will be sharing this video a lot either way, and I wish you luck.

aside from the nuclear reactors, i think honestly this mod would be way better than hbm ntm if fallout ends, think about it:
      -no rough 3d models
-actually will leave a mushroom after it's detonated without it looking nasty
      -doesn't dig 300 blocks underground
      -proper fallout
-doesn't actually reward you for activating a nuke (oil reservoirs if you're playing with some other mods and some other ores)
-slowly covers the area with the blast wave, not lagging you out and seeing how you've destroyed an ecosystem (or seeing your impending doom)
      cons:
-we don't actually see a missile form
-a chance that launching a missile (if it will be in the mod) will just require some energy
      -no nuclear reactors

I remember bomb mods in older versions of Minecraft being impressive, but this is on a whole other level. I feel this mod really captures not just the destruction nuclear weapons cause, but also the deathly anonymousness of their aftermath. I didn't even know much about nuclear fallout until this video, specifically about how fungi thrives in wastelands.
Going forward here are some ideas I thought of that you could add to the mod in the future:
    1. A craftable Geiger counter that'd measure radiation in an area instead of it being a regional sound. It might get annoying for some people when it happens no matter what.
    2. Make the explosion sound much MUCH louder. If the player is too close to an explosion the quieter it is, and the longer a "deafness" effect lasts for them. Being deaf, like in real life, renders all sound inaudible for a period of time, with that time being longer depending on how close the player was to the blast. Unlike other effects, drinking milk wouldn't cure it. Hearing aids could be a craftable item that could made to cure it so long as the player wears it for a certain period of time.
Good luck with the mod's development. I can't wait to see where it goes!

    • @soogus55

I feel like the deafness idea is kind of annoying. Imagine having fun fooling around with nukes and then having to play Minecraft with no audio for a couple of days

    • @thefarlander2050
      @thefarlander2050 8 месяцев назад +1

@@soogus55 I don't think it'd be that long. Minecraft days are shorter than normal ones, so the deafness effect would be shortened considerably to not make it out of place in the world.
That ability could also be disabled in an easy to access config file so people can fool around with it without the fear of deafness. That can be turned on for a fool, 100% accurate feel to actual nuclear explosions.
Didn't consider the fact that it can get annoying if you aren't playing it seriously. Thanks for bringing it up!

I’ve got a couple ideas that I would like to see in the mod if I played it:
-Realistically, the shockwave would be moving much faster
-Radiation damage shouldn’t only affect HP, but actually do things to the player if they spend too much time in these zones, such as making them permanently blind or slow
-Nuke should be able to be made in survival and have some kind of purpose other than destruction
-The nuke should be worth detonating, or at least not be a way to destroy land. It should do something that makes the player want to go into the zone to explore or collect something (maybe the mushrooms showcased in the video are valuable and can only be collected from nuclear explosions?).
-Radiation suits that allow for extended trips into irradiated zones
-A variety of nukes with different blast radiuses, or maybe nukes that have different effects, like one that specializes in irradiating an area, and one that specializes on completely destroying a smaller area.

Every few days, I come back to this video and get excited all over again, but it's also raised some questions:
Will we be able to make non-nuclear bombs? Not conventional bombs, but multi-kiloton/megaton bombs that are as explosive and devastating as a nuclear strike, but has no actual radioactivity within. Think the 2020 Beirut Explosion or the 1917 Halifax explosion; Beirut was around 1kt, whereas Halifax was just under 3kt.
Imagine a non-nuclear war that utilized these types of bombs to destroy enemy territory, but not contaminate it with radioactive particles.
