This is amazing. ABC in China here and I agree with all of it.
The way I describe it is that too many Chinese people live their lives for status, and the current calculus on status dictates that white people are on top. This also means their views are paramount and all the dog whistling in US/Western media is seen directly through Chinese eyes, so they internalize the performative racism of white people. Internally though, the vast majority don't think black people are inherently poor/low status, which is why your origin country matters a lot.
This is why it is so important for China and Africa to get along and to grow together. China needs to see Africa less through the Western lens and more through the African lens. FOCAC's strategic importance is thus crucial for cultural ignorance to be transformed into cultural understanding rather than cultural intolerance.

I have been living and traveling in China since 2013. I am mixed Filipino/White American. I have been denied jobs in China because I don't look "American". I also dread sending my profile pictures to agents because I would get comments like "are you Chinese" or "are you Asian?" One year, I worked part time in training center and a grandmother got mad because she wanted an "American" teaching her grandchild.
Unfortunately I have many friends who were denied apartments because they had darker skin tones.
Once I some performers at international show who American but because of their skin tone they had to perform "African" dances and wear tribal looking outfits.
The worst experience I have seen in China was when I had to attend a safety/welcome conference in Shenzhen. The police officer asked all black skinned people to raise their hand and then he proceeded to say "I want talk about your home land Africa". He then spent an hour ranting about how Africans were dangerous and that they commit the worst crimes.
But I feel like these incidents are getting less and less as time moves on. Yes racism still exists in China but a lot of it deals with ignorance and misunderstanding.

As a local, I'm so sorry about your bad experience in China. The landlord annoyed me a lot as well. Although China has the highest number of tourists in the world, many Chinese have never been to any country. Their knowledge about foreigners is only from some Chinese medium which reported a lot of negative info about black people, and many of them distinguish people's country by the color. My mom still thinks all black people are from Africa or poor areas, as you mentioned. However, it is definitely not racism. It's a kind of stereotype or first impression, that no one will hurt black people on the street. If you talk with people and let them understand you more, they will change their thinking quickly. Hope many people like you spread more truth, and eliminate misunderstandings with each other.

In Shanghai, for example, we have a group for women and if you need a contact for braiding hair, straightening, makeup, etc...you name it, you can always find someone. I expected to search for 2 months and it took only 2 weeks for me to find a new job (this was in 2014, but I doubt much has changed). One important thing to remember is that unless you have a high degree in translation, your salary will be much lower than an English teacher, but if you don't mind that it's very easy to find a translation jobs if you pass a simple translation test (start working on your translation now--find Chinese games and start trying to translate it into English for example). The African "非洲' European "欧洲" thing, to my knowledge, often used in describing ones luck on game lottery/ loot box, comes from something like "people with darker skin color (darker face) are less lucky", guess it also links with how old Western films protrait European and African people, "stereotype".

Perhaps a significant chunk of classism and general ripple effect of imperialism too, since the (mostly) white westerners holds the global hegemony and historically did a lot of horrible things in Africa. I'd say it's even less of associating the color black, but more associating Africa as a place that endured hardship, and that Europe as a place of affluence (which really just shows the ugliness of imperialism doesn't it...) hence the "unlucky" and "lucky" association respectively.

In fact, I prefer to think that is because of a stereotype formed by cultural differences for thousands of years.Just as “black face” represents bad luck in Chinese culture, it has nothing to do with race. In some movies, black faces are used to create comic effects, but if you observe carefully, white are equally effective. What's more interesting is that black faces represent bravery、bold and forthright in Beijing opera.
Most Chinese people only care about their own lives. In their view, whites and blacks are just foreigners. Moreover, because modern China is committed to overthrowing the theory of ancestry and destiny advocated in ancient times, Chinese people don‘t think that race and destiny are related.
Of course, racists are everywhere, but I think there are only a few “real racists” in China.
Anyway, I sincerely hope there will be fewer things that frustrate you in the future. -by Google Translate

About that whole pulling card thing, I think I should explain it a bit further as a Chinese person. First, it's a type of description that was developed in only recent years on the Internet among gamers, especially mobile games with those pulling-cards features. You wouldn't really see that in real life. Second, the meaning is definitely nothing about race, at least originally. In Chinese, 黑 means dark, and when we say 脸黑(face gets dark), that typically means something serious, unlucky, unfair or ridiculous has happened to you and your whole facial expression has turned dark. And gamers use that a lot, like when you have a 99% chance of hitting that enemy and the result shows that you missed it. And to contrast that, 脸白(white face) became an expression to say that you're really lucky, like you won a 0.001% winning rate on first try, which is also ridiculous. And to make cases even more extreme, netizens/gamers gradually started to use 非酋(African Chieftains) to represent the most unlucky gamers and 欧皇(European Kings) to represent the most lucky gamers, based on the general assumptions that African Chieftains have the deepest skin color and European Kings are the whitest. So the intentions of these expressions are definitely nothing about race. So just like you said, it's more about ignorance instead of racism. This level of this ignorance varies according to the development level of the city, education level of the specific person and past experiences plus general decency of him/her.

Thank you for the video. You are beautiful, your smile would light up any room. I found you through Asian Boss. Although I love Shanghai, I will never return because of an attack and the events which transpired afterwards. While in Shanghai, many strangers keep approaching me to take photos with them. I am an attractive black woman, some would call beautiful, (Although I don't think so). This is the thing. I am not the standard beauty. I am dark brown skin, and have a hour glass figure. I know being asked to take photos had nothing to do with me being black others in my group were not ask, who were also African American. My point, Chinese beauty standards are changing? Everyone assumed I was there teaching English, which I was not. They seem to have a very limited view on professional black people as if we don't exist. Finally, when I travel to any Asian country when I tell them, I am African American they are shocked. Can someone please share with me why? Is it because of African American women stereotypes? Is it because they see Americans only being White?

Living in China is definitely not for everyone. You will come across MANY repetitive comments, questions and statements based on people's ideas of what Americans are like, what foreigners are like and what black people are like.
In terms of your question, I am not sure I get it completely. Some Chinese people, based on where they grew up, have a very limited understanding of America and don't typically associate America with non-white people. I've come across this before where people would debate among themselves where I was from. It was interesting to hear people say no not necessarily Africa, black people can come from many countries. Though being a homogenous society, they mostly see colors as belonging to distinct countries.

Many hardcore leftists show strong opinions on those west-centered cultural products as it does not help to build the socialistic culture. I just started to follow your vlogs and saw this.
This much I can say that how kids laughing at certain “black” acts came about. They got it from their parents and/or grandparents, who learned it from earlier Hollywood. Especially the earlier, I meant, 50’s 60’s, like laugh-ins, sammy davis jr,,,.
Kinda like, here in US, in earlier days, people would see Chinese and say “chingching chungchung”, or mimic kungfu, or⋯⋯. Those were people, ignorant, but not nasty. Boy I miss them, nowadays, after “kungflu”, Asians get spit on, pushed, hit,,,,.
Personally, I would separate, those words associated with physical harms done upon, as opposed to harms done upon and can only returning with words. Another way to see it; the hunters’ words like “chink” vs the hunted s’ words like “鬼老”, “鬼子”… Racial, yes, racism, ⋯⋯ just saying⋯⋯

    • @thisischaniece
      @thisischaniece  2 года назад +1

Yes, of course it stems from the way they were raised and what they have been exposed to. I was quite surprised by it at first--like I really did not understand the laughing. I would try to find the most professional neutral looking photos but to no avail. I decided to show more pictures of black people to students rather than less. If seeing black people is not normalized...it needs to be. I think it's just more shocking when you deal with as a well...black person who teaches students who appear to respect you as a person only to see kind of see this ugly side of humanity in response to just seeing an image of a black person.
In the states I grew up with hearing people saying that mocking phrase to people of East Asian descent quite often, even when I was in college. Was always very disgusting to deal with. A lot of this is hateful, ignorance and miseducation.
I will say in the states dealing with racism can be much more scary (fearing for your safety or fear of being attacked), and in China it's usually just annoying.

Discrimination is not identical to racism. I agree both of them are inappropriate. But in China, people are more about discriminative mentality than racism since 95% of the population of China is Han Chinese. China is not like America, Canada, Australia or Europe with that many immigrants. They discriminate outsiders because they don't have knowledge of the outside world.

    • @thisischaniece
      @thisischaniece  3 года назад +18

China is definitely different from other western countries, but it's important to remember that discrimination comes under the umbrella of racism, so it's important to understand the definition of racism that is being used.
Thinking that Europe is superior to Africa is in-fact racist by dictionary definition, regardless of how this message was received, or lack of knowledge about these two continents. You can live in a country where culturally you grow up believing men are superior to women, and that would not make you any less sexist just because of less contact with other cultures or outside information.
I will say, that people in China do not exhibit this type of behavior because of historical ties to African/black people (like in the US, which is in fact, a pretty racist country), but because of influences of racist propaganda from the West. So, there is a huge difference between being racist (discriminatory) in a hateful way versus an ignorant way. (Though, a lot of hate is based on ignorance as well, so can we really separate these too completely?).
In regards to not knowing any better, if you were to ask a Chinese person to 换位思考 regarding discriminatory behavior towards an African/black person, they do realize that such behavior is very negative. So again, even though I too have said a lot of their behavior is rooted in ignorance, that does not make such behavior okay, or something that can be excused. For example, saying--oh well they are not really racist, they just don't understand. They definitely do understand, and it is unfair to reduce most of the population to brainwashed robots incapable of questioning the status quo.
The only reason most black/African people in China don't care much about most of the things mentioned in this video (and outside) is because it honestly does not impede our ability to live a comfortable life in China, get a good job or earn a decent wage (which some would argue is the true definition of racism--systematic oppression). Though if we were to be honest about this, most foreigners come to China to teach, and as China is very short-handed when it comes to filling teaching positions, that makes it easy for the average English-speaker to get a job here regardless of ethnicity or nationality (heck, or even of English-speaking ability in some places). So, if the average school had plenty of options to pick from, perhaps this would change?
Also, I do want to emphasize that I live in Shanghai. I have heard different stories from friends of mine that live in Guangzhou (being followed around in stores, for example), which is not something I have ever experienced in the time I have been here.
Overall, my experiences are quite positive. Knowing about the language and culture also makes a huge difference when it comes to working and living here. There are some quirks China needs to work out regarding such discriminatory behavior, but hopefully these things will change in the near future, especially in cities like Shanghai.

I would argue there are aspects of both in China. There are some ignorant comments that are annoying, and there are some comments that are actually hurtful. Racism is ultimately rooted in ignorance, the two go hand in hand. A lot of Americans are very ignorant when it comes to Muslim people and culture, but I wouldn't dismiss some of their behavior towards Muslim people as simply ignorant when it's in fact very racist. It kind of reduces their behavior to being more childlike and innocent, but that's not always the case. Something like thinking there are no black people outside of countries in Africa is ignorant, but thinking that Europeans are superior to Africans is very racist.

Black people are in for a rude awakening when they leave America and find out that they are the lowest on the totem pole in every country. This is because the Portuguese sold black people into slavery all across the globe. We have come from being there slaves to now ,what? being their equal? It's not going over that big and we're going to run into these things, saddest part is even in African Nations, they have a slick name for us called "akate", this would be because of the images that they're saying on mainstream media in America.
We as African Americans in America, have a lot to do to break the cycle of how everyone in every other Nation sees us. The best thing you can do for yourself is what you are already doing which is trying to teach these people that they have the wrong impression about us, they need to stop putting us in a box and treating us like we are a monolith. And we have to control our tempers unfortunately because we have already been judged with that as well.

I will say for the most part in China when dealing with people one on one (in person not online) if you give respect you get respect. Many people here have never interacted with a black person so their first interaction with you will heavily influence what they think about black people. I really dislike being a "model" to break stereotypes, but it is what it is. Learn the language, respect the culture and you'll change a lot of minds. Unfortunately, this won't be the same every where you travel in the world, but we just have to learn to try not to mull on whatever negativity that is thrown out to us because of our color. We can't change it, so why waste the mental energy? A person's attitude about you says more about them than it does about you.

You can educate yourself out of ignorance.
There is no scientific classification for race. Race is a social construct created by white people, so they can hold power. So not everyone is "racist to a degree". It's a choice.

The whole world is just stupid .with time racism and colorism will change once people are tired. Unfortunately we will be judge on something else but for now always be on the side of respecting and loving people, that will never change.Enjoyed your video God bless

If I limited where I lived based on racism/colorism etc my choices would be quite limited. There are some challenges, but you decide how you respond to them. Overall, I don't have many problems living in China--which is why I have been here over 8 years now.

@@thisischaniece there's nothing that makes you more successful than wanting to prove yourself and that is most likely to happen in an environment when you're constantly dealing with certain "pressure" or being comfortable with what's uncomfortable. I'm not saying it's okay to have those bad experiences but you're probably more confident in yourself by now living in China than if you were in Africa
