- So with the Black Adam film coming out soon, people have been asking me to make a videos on Dr. Fate's powers. So here's a video running over some of the most insane things Dr. Fate has done in DC Comics and just how powerful he is. For good measure, I answer the question of who would win in a battle between dr strange vs dr fate.

That was pretty much what the original Dr.strange was like, at one point he was like one of marvels strongest characters, had any power he needed when he needed it through what ever spell he used at the time. Marvel realized this was a bit daft so toned him down.
Doctor fate is usually used as a deus ex machina in DC, it’s just a matter of how much effort or will nabu has to exert, or what Kent has to sacrifice to become Dr fate.
Not only Doctor Fate, every magical user in comics is a deus ex machina.
There is always a spell writers can create.

Dr Fate being able to go toe to toe with Superman is Epic and why Dr Fates one of my fav characters.
Superman being able to go toe to toe against Dr Fate who can use Magic powerful enough to battle the likes of Specter and Chaos etc is just as Epic.
We need more Doctor Fate stories animated in DC content honestly he’s just too sick
A common issue with DC is that they underuse a lot of their superheroes severely it’s always focus on Batman, Flash, Superman, green lantern and Wonder Woman. They seem like the only superheroes with fleshed out rogues galleries, they just gotta use their heroes more especially ones like Doctor Fate. Doctor Strange is a blatant rip off of doctor fate and I feel like if doctor strange were to be used more outside of the comics he’d be just as popular or if not more popular than doctor strange.

@@Raximus3000 I don't think so, given the fact that his primary knowledge base is Marvel. I'm a huge fan of DC and know a lot about it. However my knowledge of Marvel wasn't nearly as extensive until I found Rob forever ago. So I must respectfully disagree.

I never really read much Dr Fate stuff when I was a kid back in the 60-70's. That being said, I always thought he had a truly epic helm. When I saw Pierce Brosnin unveiled in the trailers I knew they had found the perfect actor to play him. Haven't seen Black Adam yet, but man - I can't wait

I think both Dr. Fate and Strange tend to be able to pull out high level magic feats pretty evenly depending on the story, but Strange does tend to have a specific limitation Dr. Fate tends to ignore quite a lot, which, save for some high level stuff that tends to require charging, Dr. Fate has literally no "Cast time" for pretty much almost all his spells in most of his story's.
Strange has to recite the the bands, or yell about bolts of bedevilment, or summon the peppermint york of the patties, while Dr. Fate just tends to blast, throw you into another dimension or simply just punch you with his superhuman strength, with the only things he's saying is how much he's going to kick your butt for what infringement against order you just did. Some of his bigger spells he has to paint some symbols in the air, or mention this or that but its always the high level stuff. So Strange tends to lose based on cast time. As far as a skill stand point, I still think Dr. Fate tends to win, but you gotta give Strange the leg up on "outside the box thinking." While Fate is definitely capable of thinking somewhat chaotically, he's still a lord of order, while Strange very much prides himself on understanding the insanity that tends to come with magic and just roll with it, which tends to give him an edge in problem solving and variation. Its why so often Strange doesn't physically beat his higher level opponents like Memphisto or Sattanish (I'm not gonna look up the spelling of those guys XD) but instead tends to trick them into their own defeat, which works really well when your fighting someone like Nightmare who literally just pulls the reality rug out from under you.
Though it would be hilarious to see Nightmare try Dr. Fate and he just punches him in the face in his disembodied gloves and helmet mode, cause when was the last time a sentient helmet slept.
Listen hear me out. Fate does his bidding mostly based on what the lords of order tell him to do, Strange doesn't have that thus he is not bound to someone who tells him what he can and can't do. Plus Strange will do anything to win, plus Strange now was stripped of 70% of his power and he is still crazy powerful. Knock off the Helmet he ain't doing much. Yeah let's say for instance the Lord's gave Fate all of their combined power to stop Strange then he will lose. But think of it like this Strange could have both the power of the Lord's of Order and some or all of the power of the Lord's of Chaos to get the upper hand. Fate is is similar to a robot following orders and has to get updated to go with a new set of directives where as Strange doesn't. Granted he is weaker because he lost some of his power but any entity he can call upon to get an absurd amount of power is where they differ. Any means necessary vs By the book.

*For the "What If" fight between Dr Strange & Dr Fate, I'd also give it to Dr Fate. Here's my main reason as to why: Fate has the advantage of casting most/all of his spells non-verbally, while many of Strange's required specific hand movements, incantations & the cooperations of many deities/mystical beings. Ex: Dr Strange's most common binding spell "The Crimson Bands of Cyttorak", which can be found in chapter 53 of the Book of the Ancient Scrolls. Stephen is seen making the "rock on" hand gesture whenever he does this spell & in addition to this, he needs the permission of Cyttorak himself to use this piece of his power. Think of it like this, Strange was a man borrowing the powers of a god(s), while Fate's a god borrowing a man. Sometimes the god(s) i.e the vishanti can say: "NO POWWWA FOR YOU!"

Crazy coincidence but I just finished reading the 2nd volume of JLA dark today! Doctor fate is pretty awesome. I like the Order and Chaos paradigm he works under. One of my favorite characters currently.

I would love to see some character comparison videos between similar Marvel and DC characters! Like Namor/Aquaman or Mr Fantastic/Plastic Man for example. Not necessarily who would win in a fight but just talking about their similarities and differences.

Another thing is the fact that if he’s all powerful like this there will be no DC movie with his involvement on purpose, the fact that he’s in the latest movie tells us immediately he will be powered down just like strange.

They are both capable of insane magical feats.. both are capable of time manipulation.. both are capable of all the same stuff except raw speed and power. Strange needs to absorb entities and do all kinds of crazy stuff to greatly enhance his durability and raw strength.. Fate just shows up ready to go.
I see it being a brutal pummeling rather than a battle of magic at the end of the day. Can only throw each other through but so many dimensions and swiss cheese each other but so many times before stuff comes to physical blows.. xD I like Strange more at the end of the day, but it is what it is. That exist. There is an amalgam comic series that is called Dr Strangefate. It's the same series Darkclaw is from(batman x Wolverine) Marvel and DC had huge Crossover and a mixed universe in the 90's

Personally, i think Scarlet Witch would need a HUGE power boost to even stand in the same room as Nabu (like House of M for example) Nabu's counter-magic could easily break most of what Scarlet Witch can do by simply unraveling the spells with his own will, but from what i understand he can still be overpowered if the enemy caster has a stronger will/power source

A Dr. Fate/Dr. Manhattan book could be really interesting.
To put it simply dr.fate can easily end one's fate and change one's fate by thought.
I think that pushing forward the assumption that Dr. Fate's powers and supernatural might can match, if not surpasses even The Presence Himself is a *major* misunderstanding of the DC Multiverse cosmology.
Nobody is more powerful than The Presence. The Presence is The Source. The Source is God, and from God has been begotten all matter, energy, thought and concept within the DC Multiverse-- which includes Hecate, the wellspring of all Magic within the Multiverse as well as the reason why the Lords of Order (who bestowed their powers to Dr. Fate) exists, to begin with!
Telling that Dr. Fate can surpasses His own Maker equates to say that Sauron can equates Tom Bombadil. Or the likes of Scarlet Witch and the Phoenix Force the One-Above-All. Or Son Wukong/Monkey-King Buddha and the Jade Emperor.

Love Doctor fate. For me, I got to experience his awesomeness from Young Justice season 1. I’d seen Justice League Unlimited and later played Injustice 2 but YJ season 1 is what made me love the character.

Depending on your source, the Helmet of Fate is not an artifact of Nabu - it IS Nabu - the form he takes in the Earthly Realm.
I would love to see a video of Dr. fate versus Doctor Strange because most of the powers that you mentioned Dr. fate has Doctor Strange at his most powerful can do as well
Yeah but that's the thing u say Dr Strange AT HIS MOST POWERFUL can match Dr Fate...But Dr Fate can simply be in base form alone to match up against the most powerful form of Dr Strange
Respectfully your wisdom, knowledge and experience but Dr Fate (wholistically) but I noticed reference of long time reference to Dr Fate over the decades/artists/writers, which given the multiverse series of event, can we say that Dr. Fate is all the same capability/person? Maybe limiting it to a universe version might be a better comparison? As if one version of Dr. Fate another versus another universe of Dr. Fate might be a stalemate, if they are all equal. One man's greatness might be another man evilness.

As a kid I always liked Dr Fate, cool character and I liked the costume.
Hickman made a cheeky move in Time Runs Out, where he basically had Avengers face a group of heroes from a different universe, who were "Not Justice League due to copyright issues, but totally Justice League". Among them was a magician who relied on relics to draw his magic from (intended to be Dr. Fate). Strange kind of ridiculed him for being a second rate charlatan, who possessed no true magical power of his own, before he pretty much wiped them all out.

Using Spectre as a gauge is pretty rough since he's always getting owned almost as much Blackbolt. Current Fate v current Strange? Current Fate easy. Classic Fate v classic Strange? Classic Strange easy.
...Wasn't Fate/Nabu and his "siblings" greatly reduced in the JL Dark comic where magic is quite frankly accepted as made up rules and energy from another dimension?

Nabu fought unbound spectre after he absorbed all the magic in the universe. battling unbound spectre is no joke his powers are basically limitless.

The Spectre lost his luster a long time ago. For as powerful as he's supposed to be there sure are a lot of beings out there that can match or trump him when the plot requires it.

I say Strange is more powerful. I will say that I'm talking Strange at the height of his power. I'm also picking Strange as the winner, because Strange isn't in conflict with himself like Fate can be. Sometimes Nabu and his host come in conflict, and that alone could cause a loss for him.

Whatever you just commented doesn't make sense. While it's trur Dr Fate can get rough with his hosts, Most of the time especially in battle he is in control. Remember Dr Strange is a human being borrowing the powers of godlike beings. Dr Fate is a god borrowing a human.
The most important thing to remember about Fate is that he's basically as strong as the writer needs him to be at any given time. Does the writer need a power house that can hold off even the strongest foe while other stuff happens? Fate can do that. Does the writer need a character to act as the chess master to help put everyone into place so they can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds? Fate can do that too. But, the flip side is also true. Does the writer need a seemingly strong, semi-well known character to job in a fight to make another character look strong? Well.. yeah, Fate can do that.
Fate has been one of the strongest gods of the DC multiverse, and also weak enough for a random mook in Salem to knock off the helmet, and everywhere in between. It all depends on what role the writer needs him to fulfill.

It's important to note that all these powers are cosmic level to the point that he can basically destroy the entire human race just by thinking about it, so you gotta understand why they had to nerf him in the movie.

Marvel already shown why Dr Strange is more powerful when Dr Strange faced off against Marvel's version of Dr. Fate and killed him. Dr Strange even narrated in detail to that version of Dr Fate why he was superior before he killed him.

Fyi, the original Kent nelson origin had Kent being taught magic by Nabu while trapped inside a pyramid. Nelson was also granted superhuman strength, near invulnerability, flight and immortality. It was those gifts that allowed him to continue on as Fate when he decided to no longer wear the Helmet of Nabu. He wore a half face helmet the physically resembles the helmet of Nabu.

The exact reason why I do not want Dr.Fate to appear in live action films yet. WB still does not seem to know wtf they are doing. I have zero faith in the Black Adam demonstrating otherwise. I loved how Young Justice presented the idea of Fate and I wish that was accepted universally.

In the movie, Dr. Strange was stripped off his "Sorcerer Supreme" title, does that mean he answers to a higher authority? Like he's an agent, not the boss. While Dr. Fate is his own boss and doesn't need a book to cast a spell. I think Strange needs to carry around an encyclopedia and tons of artifacts so he can perform magic. That makes Zatanna more powerful than Strange too.
I would say they are evenly matched as far as their character is in their own respective universes(DC/Marvel). But on the outside looking in Dr. Fate would have an extremely hard time with Dr. Strange because of Dr. Strange ability to absorb and use an adversaries magic against them. If Dr. Strange needs a learning curve to fully know the magic of Dr. Fate then Dr. Fate may have an advantage if it came to these magical juggernauts. Being that both a mystics of magic and have been trained by the ones that came before them I would think they would never be invovled in a voluntary fight. Thanks Rob for an interesting analysis.
