- In this video we have set up a drag race between two of the best performing hot hatches on the market. The 2015 Mini Cooper S F56 takes it up against the Volkswagen Golf GTI from 2014. The Golf GTI has 28 more BHP but is 158 KGS heavier than the Mini Cooper S. Which one will win the battle and how big will the difference be? Watch the video!

EDIT: I’m also surprised how not very many people realize how fast MINIs are. They have a rich racing heritage and internally, are basically a BMW
They are BMWs, but FWD BMWs. The engine is a detuned version of the B48 engine used in more than half the BMW fleet (lower spec variants at least). It's the 4-banger version of all the current modular BMW engines, but small changes here and there like no extra intercooler in the intake manifold, etc. I know that sounds like a crazy thing to say, but it's true. :) Plenty of fun, but definitely not meant for drag racing really, haha!

burner12 I have 2 Minis (R53 and F56). The people who buy Minis are frequently not into modding their cars. If they are, they want stripes or some other aesthetic thing. They also don’t seem to like to get their hands dirty and do the work themselves. I come from the Scion community that is SUPER DIY, so the fact that the Mini people aren’t is weird to me. That’s just my personal take on why the tuner scene isn’t very Mini-centric.

It's either BMW underrate their engine performance or other manufacturers overrated their own. And also the F56 feature over-boost

People are so dumb GTI doesn’t need another driver 1. The gti weighs more than the mini and 2. Minis are never at 192 horsepower from factory bmw engines are always higher with some getting 213bhp on dyno tests.

I raced a Mini S in my 97' Eclipse Spyder. Surprisingly, i lost. I was butthurt. 5 years later i purchased a 2010 Mini Cooper S 6 speed and now i realize why i lost. Off the line the Cooper is hands down a superior and faster car off the line. Its a BEAST on the 1/4 mile !!

Doesn't really surprise me GTIs are infamous for not being able to launch. Still would take the GTI tho obviously since I own 2 of them. You can do so much more with them and the aftermarket is massive.
I wouldn’t say you can do more with them, the aftermarket for the mini is insane. It’s a bit intimidating almost, I don’t know what I wanna spend my money on most

I had a GTI, spent 20k on aftermarket performance... it was still slow... So I got a WRX, but now want a MINI

Mini coopers are geared amazing too. They are in reliable but designed well in performance.
I disagree I believe it’s how you maintain them because I’ve owned a Mini Cooper s for 4 years and the only issue was the clutch going out at 120,000 miles which is normal on all manual cars, I know the early automatic transmission models like 2009 for example has issues but the new models seem to be vary we’ll maid. @@ghostedwarrior1968 I wasn't specific, I had a r56 Cooper s and had 55k on the clock. And the timing chain started making noise at 60k. And I know they were flawed for burning more oil than engines usually burn and their service interval stated by mini was 10k so .. 10k mile intervals plus oil burning engine, plus a oil pressured timing chain tensioner was not a good mix at all. By the time I got my hands on it. Thing couple had only 5 oil changes in the matter of 50k miles. I did 3 oil changes in the matter of 4 months of owning it. It still shit itself.
The mini cooper s is rated top 5 most unreliable car in the world, and after owning 2 mini coopers.. I'll stand by that top 5 most unreliable rating..

WIth competent drivers, the GTI would easily win this. With a much faster 0-60 time stock, this race is more driver mod even with the DSG. The DSG is quicker then its manual counterpart in the GTI in every way. The GTI also has around 240-250 horsepower, since its underrated from the factory quite a lot, loads of dynos prove this and its another treason why a literal flash then will net you 315 horse.

@@CSRTV007 Well from all the magazines and comparison I don't understand this, turbo kicks in @ around 1500 rpm which is pretty impressive. This is a good real world test to be fair, but frankly, the GTI has a faster 0-60 so it doesn't make any sense that it would be beaten by the mini. I love both cars I really do, the mini cooper s is cheaper and sounds better, but the GTI picks up quick. I just think either the driver or the car is at fault here, in the sense that there's something out of the ordinary. Especially since the GTI is a DSG with much quicker shifting and a better powerband makes it even harder to believe. The GTI is lowered and has some rims on it, so that might've had an effect. This might also be the rare GTI with an open diff, as the large majority have LSD's. If so, come back with the more common LSD that's found in all SE, autobahn, Wolfsburg, Rabbit, and performance package cars, and nit a base model S without the PP

It's not just power or power to weigth, I believe the mini makes better use of it because of the gearbox and electronics. Look at run #2 and see how the GTI slips when launching (see the smoke and tire spinning) and the Cooper does a perfect launch. Now look at 1:11 and the crossing the line, most of the difference was at launch. I own a GTI and it struggles putting down the power when launching. BTW the GTI also does a little more power that declared (tons of dyno runs out there if you google it).
I have a 2020 and whhat I’m really impressed is the gears to 1-3 it’s so fast in those gears and the transmission is so nice. I haven’t seen much on 2020 versions but Ik they are faster then year16’s cuz of the upgraded engine
Can confirm, mini has short gears which are really well matched to the engine, so it feels really nice when launching and at low revs, and the golf feels so much more powerful through high speeds, and cuts through everything.

The weight to power ratio wins that GTI is 200kg heavier than the Mini Cooper s. So I’m not surprise that the mini won plus it’s a more premium car and I genuinely think that is cooler. You see tons of golfs but not that many minis cooper s.
Ive owned both and would take a GTI over Mini any day. The difference in speed is minimal compared to the difference in price when something breaks. I thought VWs were expensive to work on but the bill from a Mini dealer makes VW look like a non profit charity. .
I own both and the day that the GTI lost piston #3 was a truly bad day, especially at the labour rates VW dealer wanted to charge

Yup the MINI is quicker. Confirms my experience on the road with my F56 Cooper S. I have yet to be beaten by a GTi. Who knew? All I thought was that I wanted an alternative TiwnTurbo 2.0 to the GTi. God am I happy I went back to MINI after last having one during the R53 era. The F56 is surely the best yet ...
@Cali Bassin TV Because subjectively the older gen cars look nicer ..and are truer to the small car ideals of the original. Plus those turbo charged 1.6 engines are brilliant. But once you step on the throttle of a TwinTurbo 2.0, your days thinking about high performance 1.6s and cute small gen cars quickly disappear. Dude, even in standard "MID" mode traction is an issue ..in Sports Mode, the F56 is another class. I will give up all sentimental longings for that ...

Well first off. A couple of foot ball fields is 600ft almost 1/8th mile and second off a 1/4 mile is only 1320ft.
The Cooper S is a great car, sounds better than the Golf as well.

Have a 2019 2dr Cooper S. A GTI beat me the other day from 30mph to 65mph. I was in sport mode and sport automatic gear. I was very disappointed and needed this video to get back to life lol

the mini weighs 1.16 ton whilst the gti weighs 1.35 ton 200kg heavier, the golf has worse horse power per ton, this is why it lost

Cant be, the cooper s reached 232 kph at the end (144 mph) so I imagine the race was likely a 1/2 mile
@@RotaryMan1776 there’s no way they went 1/2 mile in 12 seconds. The posted speed (232 v. 217) is likely the governed top speed for each car, not speed they achieved.
Why the music so loud when you need to hear the car sounds? Turn music completely off for that or extremely low.
The GTI was in launch control, the Cooper wasn't. Which is why you can see the GTI's wheels spinning out on the fucked up bad asphalt if you can see it clearly.

Is the Cooper S with all-wheel drive? Isn't the GTI a performance version with 230hp because of the red letters?
No, the Mini Cooper S is front-wheel drive. As I know there exists a performance version of the Golf GTI with 245 BHP but in this video we used the standard version with 220 BHP. Correct me if I’m wrong 😉
@@CSRTV007 its pre facelift golf so it has 220hp or 230 with performance package. red badges mean its PP. Facelift golf PP is 245hp.
Yeah neither one of those are true guys. Pre face lift was 210 or 220 with performance pack, after face life was 220 all trims and 2019 is 228 all trims. These are American numbers though

GTIs bruh...... Dont matter how much power you have, that wheel spin is always going to slow you down. If try to race from a roll the result would be much different. I've seen a stock Mk7 GTI pulls on a stock WRX from a 40 roll, both manual. I drive an mk7 GTI so I know what I'm talking about.

@High life Haha no, I am just trying to understand your comment. You drove the older model with 211 BHP. A lot has changed I think. From my experience the car drives very well and accelerates good, much faster than most of the hatchbacks I drove. But everyone has their opinion when it comes to cars, no problem 😉

I own a 15’ Gti MT and raced a Mini Cooper S automatic, if they launch at the same time Gti wins 100% of the time
Who the hell puts his money on Volkswagen these days. Call me a car they made in the last 5 years that had amazing specs for under 70k price range…. There is none. The gti isn’t the quickest hot hatch these days. The only thing Volkswagen makes that’s fun is the Golf R. The rest still feels cheap when your inside one of them. (Doesn’t count for the Touareg)

..l used to have a vw GTI. 2003 and it was very fast....now l have mini copper model clubman...for some reason the GTI. Felt ..much faster.....l do 👍the mini cooper build and handling better

i won a 2015 cooper s 3door and this thing might not be the fastest but it sure is hella fun to drive, and way more than the gti .....funny enough i smoked the exact same gti and he started the challenge
Prolly gonna get shit for this but imma say it. It’s not the car it’s the driver. I smoked a BMW suv in my ‘19 GTI. It’s mostly stock with a few mods AEM dry flow intake, and a Borla S-type catback. Power to body ratio plus a good driver makes that much of a difference 😂

Being in the car community is horrible quite a lot of the time. When I started getting into cars I didn’t realise everybody would be at each other’s throats constantly over which car is faster like some comments I have read below this video😔 After all at the end of the day we all know if you want to go fast for a reasonable price you ride a bike because bikes almost always win.

Mini Cooper less horsepower, but also is smaller and lighter than gti. So it can be as fast as the gti or faster, drivers skills makes a lotta difference too..

Should have done some rolls, gti was having serious wheelspin issues compared to the mini. MK7 gti also runs faster 1/4 mile times and higher trap speeds, so it's hard to conclude which one is faster based off this video.
The first meters of the Golf GTI are in general not really fast. We found this also remarkable so we searched the internet for answers. Apparently the slow first meters are due to the DSG gearbox. When the GTI reaches higher speeds it is indeed faster than the Cooper S. As you know, the result would be completely different if we had to do the test over a longer distance.

That’s NOT a Mk 8 GTI, it’s a Mk 7.5. If you compared a Mk 8 with DSG, the outcome would be quite different. Mk 8 GTI DSG 0-60 time is 5.1 seconds.

You hadn't control 2 of the biggest variables in drag racing... 1) driver, 2) traction on different lanes, seeing that they're not prepped like a real drag strip. Hope you have enough time on your next outing to change up the drivers and the lanes. Nice music. Good start, but hope you take advantage of the room for improvement. I like both cars. Mini more a specialty, GTI more a daily all-rounder.
When you swap mini with aftermarket exhaust its no more 192hp.. Its probably increase 10-20hp..

I have the '19 GTI and it spins it's tires TCS OFF like there's no tomorrow.
Funny how much they cost? A r53 mini are about 2k now days 160bhp stock cast iron block so you can tune them up. This is the new mini way more expensive and worse engines. Just buy a old r53 mod it and your laughing will destroy both theses cars.
Both cars are second hand but the prices are far above 2K. A race between the F56 & a modded R53 could be a very exciting duel!

@@LewReviews I think the third gen would win. Despite being larger, the 3rd gen weighs within 5kg of the 1st gen while coming with 30hp more stock. A stock F56 vs modded R53 might be interesting but if the F56 was modded, they push up to 270+hp... Very good engines in the 3rd gen.
You know the F56 uses close deck and also feature Electric Arc Wire Spraying right?
