  • On 6th February 1958 the airliner carrying players and backroom staff of Manchester United, plus a number of journalists and supporters, crashed in a blizzard on its third attempt to take off from Munich airport. United were returning from Belgrade where they had just beaten Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup and had stopped off at Munich for re-fuelling. Twenty-three of the forty-four passengers on board the aircraft lost their lives.

People say that this club has "plastic" supporters who only watch for the success, but it is our history that binds us together and that which makes this club as truly great as it is. Like the badges they wore out at Wembley for the FA Cup final that fateful year, we rose like a phoenix out of the ashes to become one of the best loved sides in all the world. I am 26 years old and can honestly ever only recall seeing the likes of Sir Bobby and Harry Gregg sitting in the stands or in interviews, but to have these great men still around to remember this tragedy and honour their fallen teammates and fellow football family that was on the plane that night is special. For anybody who calls us plastic fans know that this 26 year old young man from Canada, cries every time he sings this song on this most fateful of days every year. I appreciate and honour those who established the DNA of this mighty football club and gave up their lives to do so. Thank you to Sir Matt, Jimmy Murphy, Sir Bobby, Mr. Gregg and Bill Foulkes and all the others who go un recognized for keeping United not just a float, but showed the world that United football will never die. That we will always fight. My condolences to the families of the 8 brave babes who lost their lives in Munich that snowy night. Tommy Taylor! David Pegg! Eddie Coleman! Mark Jones! Liam 'Billy' Whelan! Roger Byrne! Geoff Bent! And Big Duncan Edwards! The 8 most beautiful flowers in all of Manchester, your memory will never wilt as long as United survives. THANK YOU!!

Your sentiment comes from the heart filled love and honesty. To sing these words every year is an honor, and the Busby Babes stand with you on 6 Feb every year. No you are not "Plastic" you're the real thing. I an American love my team the Manchester United as far back as I can remember. Although I can't watch every game I do think of my team and send up a prayer. I am not sure if the clubs in America and here in my state of Minnesota honor the 8 United?. If not, the should. We all are connect to this one big family as players and fans. I take the win as well the loss. I have their back no matter what. For the next season could be the year Man Untd takes the treble. If I could be at the club I would, but for now I watch from home. Even my home State team Minnesota Untd I support them. It sucks that NBCSN dictates whats aired or not. Still I have my two teams that I love.

Haunting these words are that the soul of one grieves for the boys who lost their lives. Yet so beautiful are the words that I cried. RIP Flowers of Manchester.

funny how as a kid you dont pay much attention to these tragedies, but Munich 58 is what makes us special as a club, more so than anything on the pitch. The way we came back and still became the biggest club in the world is unique. Yes, eventually Madrid became bigger, and particularly more successful,. but I wouldn't change our rich history for any of their titles. Feel proud to support this club for over 40 years now.
