Thanks for your recap. I read Confessions a year or two ago.
I have been a Christian for years now. But, I was saved my junior year of high school, and it seemed like every day I was coming to know my Lord more and more. My senior year of high school, my pastor gave me a copy of Saint Augustine's Confessions, and every day I took it to school with me and read it for at least an hour or an hour and a half for a day. Saint Augustine through his Confessions helped me draw closer to God, and helped me keep my eyes on the one who had grace and suffered and died for me: the Son of God.
“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” -- very beautiful.
This is such a unique series you’re doing, very cool! I’m currently in the middle of The Confessions and I’ve been surprised at how approachable it is. As a person of faith, I find it a very encouraging work with the humility that he shows and how relatable he makes this book and the deep faith he’s been given. I don’t know if I’ll ever work up the courage to read The City of God though.
I think I must need to read a different translation because when I hear quotes out of context, I am just floored! I agree about his humility--I appreciated how honest he was about his past and the way he quoted and applied scripture was really wonderful. But yes, City of God! I just don't know if I'll ever be able to tackle that.
This series has been great! I hope you will continue with Greek week and beyond! 😄
Thank you!! I will definitely be planning a Greek Week soon.
Great video. I read The Confessions a few years ago and found it incredible especially in terms of how personal and intimate he gets (for his times). As a catholic, I also appreciate the fact that the book, while certainly being an autobiography, is also a prayer, since everything is written to “You” (to God).
Thanks, Tom! I feel as if I've been hard on St. Augustine and definitely should reread him in a better translation. He does get down into the details (I particularly loved the instance he admitted to stealing fruit, LOL) and I appreciate you pointing out how it is a prayer! I'm not sure I picked up on that in certain parts.
Thanks for doing this. I have huge gaps in my knowledge of history, but am interested in learning more. You explain things well. I would be interested in a “Greek week “ as well as more on the Vikings and Italy. - Deb
Thank you, Deb!
What a wonderful idea for a series. I'd love to hear about the Greeks! I haven't read Confessions, but City of God is on my 2020 tbr.
I totally thought you were going to talk about Lucan, lol. The first time I read The Confessions his view of time really clicked with me. It was something I had been thinking about. I don't remember the reincarnation discussion. I would love to see you talk about some ancient Greek classics. I need to read more of the Ancients!
I should have done Lucan! That would have been the perfect to complete the week (and Dante's faves) so maybe I will have to do another Roman week. Augustine offers a lot of really interesting ideas--I think I need to try him in another translation.
Saint Augustine was canonized by pope Boniface VIII in 1308 and declared a doctor of the church, of which there are at present only 38.
Please,do a sequel on Greeks!
I'm glad so many people want to see the Greeks!
Yes plz Greeks !
