You ,sir, most definitely belong in the Greek Philosopher Hall of Fame . Thank you so much for putting it straight forward. I am a bass beginner, with no bass, yet .... For the last week i have been researching, and searching for the right bass i would like to start with. Price range started at USD 230.00, and shot straight up to USD 930.00 . And still i am pondering about which bass to get. The thing is, i am really looking for something that is attractive to me, but like you said, don't go buying an expensive peace if you are not ready for it, and still have to mold your own "texture and wisdom". I will surely not forget that. So, after watching this video, i am going to wipe the board clean, and start all over. Thank you so much for the wise words of wisdom. You surly have a lot to share, so please, don't stop sharing. It is people like you and my grandma, on my mom's side, that really gives the best advise and wisdom. Thank you once again, and may God Bless you and your family.
Hey Mr Long, What a breath of fresh air you are. I'm 61 from New Zealand, and although when people look at me they see a white boy, my dad is native Maori ( polynesian ), so I come from a culture that says it as it is and always with humour. Played guitar off and on since 16, but just took up the bass and I can't get enough. My bro in law gave me his old 70's / 80's Aria pro2. Don't know what took me so long. I must be a slow learner! Looked at every vid on 10,12,20 best small bass amps and for the money, went with the Acoustic 50. It sounds great and although it's not going to be my amp to end all amps, it is definitely doing the job it's intended for. I see it all the time here in the States, where everyone just have to have the biggest of everything and often think to myself that Americans need to get over themselves and learn to want what you have, not always have what you want. You have yourself a great day Mr long and I subscribed.
Keep doing what you're doing Mr. Long, as a beginner myself we need people like you to give us guidance, to take us through that road ridden with your footsteps, for you ARE the Yedi Master and we humbly accept your knowledge for which we are most greatful!
I'm not a bass player I am a drummer but, I am so glad I found your channel you are an amazing bass player your a fellow Virginian and your videos are very entertaining and informational. You seem like an all around good guy .✌
This was humbling and refreshing. I'm still playing the Fender Rumble 15 that came with my bass pack. I can already tell it's weak and noisy, but I also understand that most of the bad noise that comes out of it is produced by my hands. I'm just starting, so for as long as I can't make any good amp sound better than my little beginner pack box, I'm keeping it around and learning from/with it. Love your channel.
Great topic, the first amp I ever heard, was my big bro's 1965 Fender Bassman 50 watt with two 12" He then graduated to an Acoustic 370/371 400 watt with one 18" Wow, I was sold on that amp, and I was only 6 years old. As a teenager, my bro let me take the Acoustic on my own gigs too!!!! Acoustic 370/371 will always be the amp for me, no matter how big, or how heavy...that amp has head room for days, and will knock the plaster loose from between the walls!!!!!
Johnny you are wisdom,,and I have never once,,,you give everything a chance,,,,,(YOU SEE THE BEAUTY IN EVERYTHING,,,,AND I MEAN EVERYTHING,,THAT'S EVERY LIVING THING),,,,,,,,,,,and I am,,, one proud fan!
I gigged for a year with a 100 Watt Hartke combo that my father pulled out of the dump. Still works great, albeit I have to plug into the active input. I'm upgrading now, but I got a lot of mileage out of that little amp!
Johnny, You are so right about portable and lightweight bass amps. The days of hauling around bulky bass amps are gone. While I did like the sound the old Fender Bassman 100’s (with 4 12” speakers) made I sure like my 39 lb. Fender Rumble 200 (with a 15” speaker). Years ago I used to use a Kustom (blue tuck & roll bass amp with two 2x15 cabinets)...couldn’t do that today. Johnny, you’re videos are just plain great, I am enjoying all of them. I enjoy your playing, your equipment reviews and your positive energy! Thank you.
I started playing bass on a pair of amped headphones Christmas 1994. Then a Gorilla practice amp. Eventually landed on an Acoustic 450 head with a 2x15 cab for $250 from the local CD store owner. (still have the amp, cab disappeared years ago) Once I started playing metal, the singer and I went to Guitar Center and bought an Ampeg SVT3-Pro amp and a floor model 6x10 on discount. About 2001. Cost about $1000 for both then. Just the same amp now is $1200 or so. I started to learn guitar for fun and bought an Orange Crush 20w 1x10. Sounds great for a practice amp. Get what you can get your hands on and then make "it" great. It's now 2020. Just realized this video is from 2017.
I don't hate any amp, but my preference has been Fender. My first Amp was a 15-watt Peavey guitar amp when I first learned to play guitar. My guitar amp is a Fender Princeton 65. My Bass amp is a V3 Rumble 40. My old bass amp was a Fender BXR 300. I fully agree with your thoughts. That BXR 300 was a pain to move around. Meanwhile, this Rumble 40 is super lightweight and has a great tone. When the time comes I will move up in power when needed, but you are 100% on point.
I've been playing for about 10 months and I'm an old guy with a lot of screws in my back (and a few loose screws elsewhere!). The Fender Rumble 40 has been perfect for everything I need right now!
Totally agree with you Dr. Johnny! I've had all the big "important" stuff i.e. my stage rig was, and i still have it, a Trace Elliot GPX12 pre run thru a Yamaha P2200 power amp with it all biamped into a Peavey Tx 410 and a GK 115 and the sound is INCREDIBLE but the whole rig has to be TRUCKED in!!! I've now got for my general overall rig a Hartke 5000 head biamped into a Hartke 210 and a GK115...GREAT sound and a Volkswagen can haul it around!!! Of course the axe feeding it all is my baby, my MM Stingray! When I played country, I used my Peavey TL5n which is one of Tim Landers' proto types he got from them when he was designing the bass. I have since replaced the Peavey preamp in it with an Audere that is marvelous but my main girl is my MM Stingray anymore. Cheers! :^D
At 57 y.o. I hear ya Johnny. I’m too old to be bucking an Ampeg SVT all tube head and an 8x10” refrigerator sized cab at load in or load out. I have a 40 watt Fender Rumble for practice, an Ampeg Class D 200 watt head through a custom 1x12” cab for the studio (no, I don’t use anywhere near that much power in the studio, but I do have all the clean headroom I could ever desire) and for live stage use, an Ashdown 500 watt Class D head through an Ashdown 4x10” cab that weighs only 45 ibs. I have a 280 watt pedalboard sized amp on my modest board for backup in case the Ashdown fails. It took me a long time to arrive here. Each rig is purposed for a certain somewhat broad scenario and there is some crossover. Still, each is lightweight, including the 4x10” cab. Who’d a thunk that anyone would ever market a 45 lb. 4x10” cab. It sounds good too.
With they way technology advances, I’ve always used it to my advantage, especially as a bassist. Not trying to kill myself and my back anymore. I run my PRS GG5 into my pedalboard(tuner, drop pedal, preamp) that goes into the band’s PA, and a separate signal goes to my Fender Rumble 100v3 as my bass monitor. I walk into every gig with ease, all in one hand. Plus, that also makes me more valuable. Because I drop off my gear, then quickly come in to help others, and help setup the PA.
Johnny you are inspiring! God Bless and Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom, from a Master player as yourself to us novices, Much Appreciated!
I am 53 and I just started playing bass a little over a year ago. Its just a little retirement gift from me to me and I did get the best bass in the world for it, a Roland CUBE 60XL BASS 60 Watt Combo. Why is it the best bass, because I love the sound and I could afford it. I’m going to be the next Johnny Long. Thanks for the great video’s.
great content i been playing bass for about 12 years and use a ashdown blue 180 cab and a peavey 1979 head unit and also have a 1976 vox blue cone practice amp the one strate after the vaule amp
In my dumb 20's I toted around a 6x10 cab with a svt4 pro head. I then bought a mark bass 121 and it changed my whole world. Lighter combo amps are the best. If your doing a gig at a venue with a legit sound system wuth a d.i. box you are using your amp as monitor basically. You don't need all that cab anymore, especially with today's technology. I learned the hard way, big cabs just mean you are probably compensating or just trying to show off.
Picked up a little Fender Rumble 15 watt practice amp Sweet tone Being playing through and giged Peavey TKO 115 the last 25 years Never let me down but distorts easily now
Love my Carvin B800 with a 4x10. Way more than I need though. I'd be fine with a light little combo. Younger me was a little ego driven and those darn guitar players kept turning up 😁
One half of my stage rig is the 1975 Acoustic 200 watt 140 head on top of a 1976 Acoustic 104 6 by 10 speaker cabinet. It is a MONSTER. What is your take on these Acoustic brand amps of the 70's - And YES it is solid state.

Still have my SWR super redhead. Not going anywhere! Mad SWR went out of business. But us 50+’s don’t want to be bogged down with heavy cabinets. I’m looking @ the Ashdown OriginAL 300 with 1x12 because it’s LIGHTER than my redhead. I’m still looking for an SWR Amplite head.🤨
my first amp in 1995 (21yrs old and broke) was a Hartke 140wtt head with a Hughes and Kettner 1x15 cab, that's what I could afford and it was passable but it was just at the tip of loud enough because I played in a punk band and most of our gig's were unmic'd plus my brother who was the drummer played a big sounding Tama Rockstar and our guitarist played a 100w Marshall JCM 900. Now I just play in my garage with my son who is is my guitarist and we have a Hartke LH500 head with a Tech 21 VT bass pedal running through a GK 4x10 & an Ampeg Classic 1x15 cab, I got that rig super cheap!!!!!!
I havent heard of any of.the new new ones. .your right .i had an Acoustic 1x18 i could barely fit in the side doors ov my 66VW camper.i ain't doin that no more thats a young bucks game
Gretta the camper is long gone .that was 91 ish. Back when you could find cool old junk cheap.$250merican p bass$ 500 pontiac catalina $150olds cutlass supreme..just things .cant take it with you .Jesus is the imperishable .there thats a word now .
Thanks for the sound advice. I have a Frankenstein amp put together and given to me free from a friend it does the job. What's your take on on the short scale basses by Squier and others? Thanks for your giving of your time and wisdom.
I'v had the same amp for 19 years,my ampeg B-100R still sounds good today and i play about 3 to 4 shows a month..I don't think they make them anymore..
I feel like if your venue doesn't have a sound system the bigger stuff is needed like 8x10 with the high wattage I know it sounds crazy but I play in a college band there is no sound system on the field for me to run through I am young and strong. Definitely need some meat to rolls those around especially when your 8x10 cab has all aluminum speakers heavier than an ampeg but if you have the experience and at very large venue with a wall of sound behind you and have the muscle it's needed but if we did have a sound system hell yes get the small stuff I keep a 2x10 for gigs off the football field and let the FOH be me other than that your basically getting a monitor for yourself with a foh. I run a GK setup goldline 8x10, GK 1001 and a carvin 2x10 cab mxr m80 and a zoomb3 (directors choice not mine) and I play a Spector rex5 (yes I use the 5th string at every show as well as the 1st gotta compete with tubas) and for me personally the first bass amp I ever heard/played through was a sunn combo amp that I used in middle school.
I really needed someone to tell me that.. I am buying things a lot but yeah I realised that doesnt make me a great guitarist. Need to go n practice haha!
I've been playing since 1983 and now at 50 yrs old, I don't wanna lug some huge beast of an amp anymore. My back won't take that as well as it used to, so I agree I want something I can pick up and be out in 5 mins easily.
I guess your sound is in your fingers. Because I just play alone in an apartment I solely play with headphones and enjoy the sound I can get out of a little Hotone Thunder Bass amp and cheap headphones. The most annoying thing is when the strings buzz, but that happens with any equipment if you don't have enough "wisdom" in your fingers.
I can totally identify. I've had every bass amp ever made. Today I only have a Bassman Ten - ok bass sound, but a terrific guitar amp. I never, ever use it for bass. I use a SansAmp Bass Driver DI. $170 and it can do both Fender, Ampeg and everything in between. I use it for gigging and recording. Your back, shoulders and bank account will thank you. If you just absolutely need a big boy rig and want to piss off your pain-in-the-ass neighbors, then save your money and find an older Fender Bassman 300.
There's a reason why most people achieve their bass tone in the studio not with an amp, but a DI box. That reason is that 99% of bass amps sound like utter shite. Some of my favorite recorded bass tones were achieved by running a guitar amp into a bass cab for the distorted track, and a DI track for the cleans.
You ,sir, most definitely belong in the Greek Philosopher Hall of Fame .
Thank you so much for putting it straight forward.
I am a bass beginner, with no bass, yet ....

Everyone has there own sound. Great point. Big fan of the SWR GOLIATH 2🙌🏾

My Dude thanks for keeping it 100 Johnny !!
Love my Carvin B800 with a 4x10. Way more than I need though. I'd be fine with a light little combo. Younger me was a little ego driven and those darn guitar players kept turning up 😁
My first amp was a GK800RB....fantastic head....loved it...miss it (came up short and had to pay rent)
My first bass amp, a Fender BXR-100 and a 7 band Trace Elliot booster/equalizer...sounded good even against a Marshall stack
Brother you are for real. 👍 God bless
Johnny priceless information.
I have a Marshall mg30 since a long time, And to me, it keeps rocking really hard!
One half of my stage rig is the 1975 Acoustic 200 watt 140 head on top of a 1976 Acoustic 104 6 by 10 speaker cabinet.
It is a MONSTER.
What is your take on these Acoustic brand amps of the 70's -
And YES it is solid state.
Great advice as usual Johnny. I have a LA 12 that came with my bass package. I see you also use that amp. But say your gonna add a horn. Could you cover amp upgrade one day. Thanks Daveed. Also I see I'm not the only one who. Wants to know how to contact you. For getting my bass and perhaps LA 12 in HOBO shop for upgrades. Thanks again for sharing your " Most High" gifts of music education 🎶
Makes sense. Good advice
From an Ampeg v4-b with a peavey 215 to an avatar 410-neo with a markbass sd800 - oh how lovely it is to have a light and loud setup
Very wise advice.
I have a fender rumble 100 combo and it has wheels on it at the age of 50 night my back is loving that.
Great advice.
very much appreciate your wisdom.
Great wisdom for beginner
Thanks for sharing Johnny👍
Just got the Markbass Traveler 102P and 151P! Awesome cabinets!
It ain't the hammer, it's the guy swinging it.
Nice information cheers and best wishes from Liverpool UK
Great advise!
You had to drag those amps out johnny to do that video,,appreciate it!
i love the look of that orange, i want one
The sound is absolutely incredible
Great video. Keep up the great work.

I'v had the same amp for 19 years,my ampeg B-100R still sounds good today and i play about 3 to 4 shows a month..I don't think they make them anymore..
Nothing but truth in this video. Should be required viewing for all sub-pro guitar and bass players.
FYI: Marcus announced his endorsement of Mark Bass at NAMM 2017 and has been using those since. No more EBS.
Hi john, how many watts do you think is good for practice and small gigs?i was think of fender 50 watts
100 and above
@@LONGCASTLE777 100 and above TUBES BABY!!!!! Ch CHA CHA...
So BASSically, buy what you want! ;)
CHADAKAKA!
TO ME , ampeg was the go to

I run a GK setup goldline 8x10, GK 1001 and a carvin 2x10 cab mxr m80 and a zoomb3 (directors choice not mine) and I play a Spector rex5 (yes I use the 5th string at every show as well as the 1st gotta compete with tubas) and for me personally the first bass amp I ever heard/played through was a sunn combo amp that I used in middle school.
First bass amp i ever heard was the bass amp used on the And Justice for All album
Wait...
That joke was no good tbh
@@Titanplattensegler4420 damn i made this "joke" 6 months ago? It is really bad lol
You should check out DNA amplification
it's like blondes or brunettes or readheads : it's just a matter of picking the one that "turns you on" , gets you excited and just you wanna play....
Peavey was my first amp
I just bought a LC Electronic BG250-208 2x8 bass combo...would this be a good amp to gig with?
I want one of those
But can I gig with this amp. 😁
@@carlwilson4375 absolutely
So true weight. Sound and price. We are living at at time ware we have so much choice.
I really needed someone to tell me that.. I am buying things a lot but yeah I realised that doesnt make me a great guitarist. Need to go n practice haha!
The only amps I can criticize is the GC Acoustics. Crappy sound, don't stand a test a time.
the entry levels hartkes are bad to no treble or mids really
You forgot Behringer.
I've been playing since 1983 and now at 50 yrs old, I don't wanna lug some huge beast of an amp anymore. My back won't take that as well as it used to, so I agree I want something I can pick up and be out in 5 mins easily.
Have you heard the Zoom B3? An amazing pedal with a DI, can simulator, and built in effects. Probably weighs 4 pounds haha but it's amazing!
Newbie : I want the best amp available
Me : Why so you can sound like crap louder than you do now
I guess your sound is in your fingers.
Hi ? How connect thos amps to a mixer ???please
corazon grupero mic it up
Eddie Rogers ok ?so is the way to do it ??whit mic and the mic go to the mix board??
corazon grupero yes exactly. You will want to get a bass amp mic or just use a shure 57 but a bass mic would be better
TRUE!!!!
I totally agree. I have heard guys that have great tone but they cant play worth of shit.
Good advice, my thing is do your research and don't buy something that you're gonna later regret buying, wasting money
OHH Yeah!
Love the Tigers, man
Change location to national geografic wild or discovery entomologist lmao.😆😆😆👍☕ have a nice day jhonny.😉🌞
Word.
💙👊😎
Had,Played thru Most of e'm,Though I've a GK, the MOST Dependible, (Had it for Over Ten Years!,isn't Even a "BASS" amp!!(It's an Eon g2 P.a.!!)
You forgot Acoustic lol
There's a reason why most people achieve their bass tone in the studio not with an amp, but a DI box. That reason is that 99% of bass amps sound like utter shite. Some of my favorite recorded bass tones were achieved by running a guitar amp into a bass cab for the distorted track, and a DI track for the cleans.
GK is the best...........
So your saying a beginner shouldn't buy 2 8x10 cabs and 2 ampeg 300 watt heads ,,,,damn it,,,,,,LOL
Yessir
lol cool
2024
go comprassion!
Gear is overrated... Get an old Peavey for under $200 bucks used, call it a day and practice instead of researching gear...
