Not likely. Adult content videos weren't sold at non-adult places and video rental places that *did* rent them kept them in a separate section behind a curtain or door.
I watched this and the sequel on Netflix years ago, for historical reference and to see if they held up. I was fascinated (and a little disgusted) by how Fritz stirs up a riot with his demands for social change, only to turn tail and run when the crows needed him most. Abandoning your lofty ideals when it becomes convenient and letting everyone else clean up the mess you've made sounds pretty on brand for the members of Fritz' generation...
@Frizzurd Garth:"did you ever find Buggs Bunny attrative when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny?" Wayne: HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAH no Garth: "yeah neither did I I was just asking"
For all of you fact checking this. Remember actual swearing aside from "hell" and "damn", references to drug use, sexual activity, prostution and depictions of realistic practices of racism and police tatics of the period were considered cardinal sins on television and all media until the late 1990's. Yes there were animation that had stuff that had adult jokes and looked scary. Hell there were even cigarette ads on early flinstones episodes. But this was the first time an animation did all of these things and it was so blatant and open for adults.
I think I remember someone saying that the random characters having random conversations was actually hidden recordings of the voice actors. When the VA's would sit down to do their lines Bakshi was always displeased as it never sounded quite "natural". So he recorded them during their off time for actual real, natural conversations.
Animation actually used to be almost exclusively aimed at adults. But once the TV came along and studios like Hannah Barbera started making very episodic and poorly animated shows, it caused the stigma that animation is just for kids to come about.
@Myka Ruest Certainly hurt a lot of things, and not just American animation. Foreign animated movies, anime in particular, tend to do poorly here because the content is often "too violent" for children and adults assume an animation is "only for kids" so they don't see it either. Puppetry had the same problem and was originally an adult medium as well. Jim Henson sort of did that to himself though and he purportedly regretted and hated the "kids only" stigma that he created regarding puppets.
FUN FACT: Thanks to Fritz the Cat is made adult animation uprising like Akira, Heavy Metal, Duckman, Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park even adult swim. It's so amazingly accurate to have that movie becoming more influential for over 50 years. Gotta loved adult animation. Thank you, Fritz.
Fun fact: Ralph did record random conversation, but they were from his day to day life. The rabbi, was from his own father. Most of bakshi’s movies either took place in New York or talked about anti Semitic themes because that’s what he knew. He was a Jewish Italian New Yorker! There’s a channel on RUclips that talked about the life of his animation career! And gave me a newfound love and influencer!
If Mystic Blue is talking about who I think they are, the channel itself is called “ElectricDragon505” but the person who runs and makes the content for it is called “AniMat”. He’s been on RUclips for about a decade so far and all of his videos take very in-depth looks into the history of animation’s biggest companies and famous animators. He also does personal reviews of animated movies and most recently, he reviewed the new “Addams Family” movie.
This movie made conkers bad fur day look like Joshua and the promised land and a few later on bakshi movies upped the rating and then some fritz is tame compared to a certain other movie later on. But oh its well deserving of the x rating.
"Why are their tails coming out of their butts?" Artists don't know how tails work, they always look like they're coming out of the butt or the lower back.
One side: Makes it very uncomfortable The other side: Wants to avoid that uncomfortableness entirely Technically correct method of drawing tails on biped animals: The tail on an animal walking upright should be just above the asscrack, as it comes from the coccyx, more commonly known as the tailbone.
This was more or less me watching Utawarerumono. Many characters had tails, but the tails essentially did nothing, save for one early gag in the show. Meanwhile, in the follow-up series, a soft reboot focusing on a new cast, called "Utawarerumono: The False Faces", the animation was handled by an entirely different studio, and they actually bothered to make the characters' tails do stuff, and add them as just another tool for the characters' expressive animations.
A really easy way to draw the tail correctly is to just look at a picture of a human skeleton. The tail bone is where it should come out. There's plenty of pics that show the skin with it, so it makes it even easier!
Actually, Snow White was not made for children. It was aimed at all audiences, which does make a difference. And there were many adults who saw it when it was first theatrically released.
@@sarahlilly1745 Examine it closely and pay better attention. Is it *really* kid-friendly, or does it get just close enough to be passable for children? If it were released today, it'd likely be a PG or PG-13 flick due how the movie does not mince words about death and paints the Queen as an irredeemable abuser, villain, attempted murderer and accomplice to conspiracy murder (telling the Huntsman to kill Snow for her and even bring back her heart).
The animation is actually pretty good considering the corners that were cut in the 60s and 70s. But Fleischer did not come after Disney. Disney pretty much copied them and ran them (and others) out of business.
I'm pretty sure the Fleischers' own hubris did their studio in. Yes, they did try to compete with Disney, through 'Gulliver's Travels,' but it was through the high demands of Superman that they fell apart.
Discotek put it out on blu-ray a few years ago. Beautiful film... but very, _very_ slow. A very good film to teach your kids about the concept of death.

I just saw Fritz the Cat with my family, and I agree with all of these points. While the story and characters are lacking, the social commentary is well done, and it perfectly captures the time period it came out in. It's certainly psychotic as well. Also, funny story; My dad actually went to see this film at 8 YEARS OLD...I have no idea why my grandfather took him to see it(He doesn't even remember seeing it now) and my dad really had no idea what to make of it. The best part was when my dad and grandfather left the theater and went walking around. There was a dude behind him who said "That Fritz the Cat is a FUCKIN'N FREAK!" (Also my mom saw this at a drive in theater at 13...Don't know why my parents saw the weirdest shit as kids, lol)
I would say it was the 70s. Hell I don't like how in the 80s cartoons were made solely just for merchandise. That's why I think the 90s was a much better decade animation wise
@@masterknife8423 I grew up in the 80s and had no problem with the cartoons as they were. Muppet Babies, the Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, She-Ra, Thundercats, Alvin and the Chipmunks, they were all big favorites of mine, and I loved watching them every Saturday morning. They had plots and adventure, still wrapped up in a moral lesson but I enjoyed watching it. Those kinds of cartoons died out in the mid-90s, after Rugrats, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Animaniacs had their heyday. Nowadays cartoons on TV are 90% school lessons and 10% story (Dora, I'm looking at you), and it stinks.

Considering that I am the unprettiest RUclipsr ever, smelling like 100 dead orangutans is really incredible. Yet you did not mention that at all. I am quite disappointed, dear spheal
Yeah, those tails are lower on the body than they should be... They are a part of the spine, so they'd come out the bottom of the back, right above the butt.
its not really correct, not even close. tails do go down, though theyre still above the rear and goes over, not under. no animal has a tail that goes through their butt cheeks.
I can see that as a good design choice. The fellow would probably just shred them off anyways. Also saves the animation team from having to animate him stripping. Kinky bastards.
And before Fleischer there are Winsor McCay, Pat Sullivan, Earl Hurd and Otto Messmer who are the real fathers of animations, and before them as developing the animation before became something so there are Eadweard Muybridge, Charles-Émile Reynaud, Émile Cohl, James Stuart Blackton, Segundo de Chomón, and Georges Méliès.
As an artist, this was actually one of my favorite movies because it’s just so obscure and i love to just talk about how weird this movie was,, actually I love the idea of the classic looking animal characters but they have their own messed up and adult lives,, it reminds me a lot of American Psycho (the book) combined with Garfield comics,, there are a lot of bits I would’ve organized differently but the animation itself and the themes were really good (never saw the sequel tho and didn’t know there even was one,)
I think the reason the tails look like they are coming out of the "butts" is more to show that females are "submissive" with their tails constantly down and closer to the traditional "tail tucked, submissive position" that Society expects females to be. Also the females were wearing skirts, so it sort of makes sense to have the tail peek out the bottom edge of the skirt. I also noticed that when the females were without clothes that their tails would pop up and usually the female characters acted more sure of themselves at that moment their tail was in the "up position" like all the male characters were constantly at. When you look at the crow females their tails were ALWAYS out and in positions similar to the male crows. I think that was a statement on the fact that crows, irrelevant of gender, had the same amount of "freedom" in a society that discriminates against the crows. I did notice at times certain female crows were more dominant than the males and thus her tail was usually in a "up position" in comparison to theirs. I think the tails were deliberate, and were a commentary on the amount of "freedom" each gender had.
Seeing as the crowd are meant to portray African Americans it most likely is showing how different the gender dynamics were in black and white spaces, as Black women often had to take the lead in their households. Also the stereotypes of the angry Black woman and the Jezebel (hence the prostitution)
It's a little sad that THIS shaped the idea of what mature animation is. Drugs, sex and swearwords shouldn't be a staple of animation proper for adults. (As much as I love Bojack and Rick).
@@hassathunter2464 no. Live action movies are generally seen as for adults. Some are just for adults ONLY. While animation is generally seen as "for kids" and SOMETIMES for adults. That's why many people I know just don't feel like watching good animated anything, they feel they shouldn't. :/
@@sevdijehavziu3015 You're right though. Look at any of the pre-censorship Betty Boop cartoons and it's clear that kids were NOT the target audience, lol
Fritz was voiced by actor Skip Hinnant, who some people of a certain age may remember him from a PBS kids show in the 1970s called 'The Electric Company'. He starred along side with Rita Moreno and Morgan Freeman.
Fritz needed to happen, but sadly domestic animation is still largely forced into a kid friendly pigeon hole. Japanese animation meanwhile, has no problem being aimed squarely at an adult audience, and makes anime which deals with adult themes. :-/
Will Huey Yeah... And to some extent, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. But Japan had things like Wicked City, in 1987. ruclips.net/video/HBXd12-6hq4/видео.html Then there’s Elfin Lied... There just seems to be so much more violent and sexual animation from japan. The west may have invented the pinup girl (fact check?), but Japan invented hentai.

1:41 Actually not true animation from the 1920s-1930s were more geared towards adults and wasn't seen as kids stuff. It was not until the late 1930s when animation started aiming towards kids or family friendly crowd due to censores interfering after the prohibition
Mr. Diugh I must bring up this fact. Ralph bakshi and George Lucas worked on two films together that came out the same year. For George it was Star Wars And for Ralph it was Wizards They would collaborate on the films, George saying that Ralph should change the name of his movie (which was originally suppose to be called wizard wars) so it wouldn’t clash with his own film that had a somewhat similar title. Not to mention that wizards would kick off mark hamil’s voice acting career!
Speaking of the female characters' designs, it's not just the tails, their whole designs are weird. Like, some of them look human, except for the noses, ears and tails. It's also weird how most characters don't wear pants, but are shown having sex normally. Do their penises grow out of nowhere? Actually, I don't want to think about that.
From what I recall about watching a bit of Fritz a few years ago, yes. His dick and balls just show up suddenly for a few scenes. Might have been the sequel film saw though.
I really love these animation history deep dives. There is so much to explore, so many hidden/unfinished gems to see. So many projects that are fading away, but shouldn't.
1:52 Fleischer did not copy Disney. Fleischer’s first cartoon was released in a series called “Out of the Inkwell” in 1919 while Disney’s first animation was in 1923. Disney followed Fleischer. There is also a misconception about the introduction of audio in cartoons. Fleischer studios were the ones to introduce audio into animated shorts. Walt Disney just popularized it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think The Flintstones was initially pitched as a show for children but a primetime cartoon aimed at adults to air alongside things like The Honeymooners. There are even old ads for cigarettes features Flintstones characters. It wasn't until later on where the Flintstones started to be rebranded as something more for children when they started using them to promote things like vitamins and cereals.
no you're correct, The Flintstones was originally meant for adults(hence all of the Honeymooners references)and it wasn't aimed at kids until like the 70s
I remember that too. I saw an article in TV Guide that Flintstones was an animated cartoon “for adults” and since I was 8 years old I was afraid it meant I wouldn’t be allowed to watch it. The Flintstones characters were shown smoking cigarettes and advertising Winston cigarettes who was their sponsor early on.

Thank you. Finally someone that knows their history.
And thus, Nickelodeon and Disney came to be to save us from the inappropriate stuff. Several decades later, Cartoon Network became to be.

"Why are their tails coming out of their butts?"
Artists don't know how tails work, they always look like they're coming out of the butt or the lower back.
One side: Makes it very uncomfortable
The other side: Wants to avoid that uncomfortableness entirely
Technically correct method of drawing tails on biped animals: The tail on an animal walking upright should be just above the asscrack, as it comes from the coccyx, more commonly known as the tailbone.
Here's one word: T A I L B O N E
Avatar (James Cameron) did this right. His film had humanoid aliens with their tails in the correct place.
A really easy way to draw the tail correctly is to just look at a picture of a human skeleton. The tail bone is where it should come out. There's plenty of pics that show the skin with it, so it makes it even easier!

Same, i love adult stories with anthropomorphic animals

Fritz was voiced by actor Skip Hinnant, who some people of a certain age may remember him from a PBS kids show in the 1970s called 'The Electric Company'. He starred along side with Rita Moreno and Morgan Freeman.

There is also a misconception about the introduction of audio in cartoons. Fleischer studios were the ones to introduce audio into animated shorts. Walt Disney just popularized it.
