An interesting thing about the animators most of them were from every major animation studio from the 1930's -50's, you had people from Disney, Warner Bros., MGM, Fleischers, Paramount, and Terrytoons that were drawing scenes depicting sex, drug use, and graphic violence.
Before that, show them the 1954 film "Animal Farm." My parents and I decided to watch it for fun because 1. My class was reading the book, and 2. The first two seasons of The Flintstones was originally geared towards adults. However, it was more like I Love Lucy while Fritz The Cat was like a goddamn war zone.
My mum and her friends apparently went when their group was around 6-12 years old because they had no idea what it was rated. All they knew was that it was about an animated cat and they liked cartoons. My mum said she came home and when grandpa asked her how the movie was she just said "That was one nasty cat" and wouldn't talk about it further.
I think this movie was one of the movies to push the "Cartoons isnt just for kids.", it help push other animators to do Adult stuff and then slowy refine it to some of the great shows of today, including the more "kiddy" ones. It push the media to be taken more seriously (even thou this movie is not the best).
Late, but the way Bakshi saw it is that he was taking animation back to its roots. The West Coast vs East Coast thing used to extend to animation as well. Whereas the West Coast made more story-driven pieces, the East Coast (ex. Fleischer) made cartoons that were little more than excuses to use whatever gags they could think of, and they were pretty dang raunchy.

I love the background art in this film, its got a grimy atmosphere that I'm sure captured the chaotic & miserable tone of the late 60s and early 70's quite well. Feels lived in, also died in.
Here's my take of the plot, Fritz escapes multiple places and moves from town to town, leaving behind destruction due to his actions. As for his girlfriend, She notices he left and tries to find him and coincidentally he came back when things calmed down. And finally she didn't show up to the hospital because she was left out in the desert with her car
It's not a great movie and it relies heavily on shock value. .... that said, there is the often overlooked scene where Fritz describes how he dropped out of college because he felt it was a waste of money and simply an act of conforming to please his parents. The rest of the film really illustrates how this bored, horney, mildly idealistic young "man" finds himself in all sorts of odd scenarios as a result of his impulsive decisions during a time of incredible political and social unrest. It's subtle, but there is a bit of a character arch. Fritz, not being a caricature himself, is surrounded by all sorts of exaggerated stereotypes throughout the film. He is immediately relatable as a normal "person" who's sole motivation is, "well this seems interesting." He gets swept away, tangled up, worked up, woke up, but then realizes that it all comes down to, "hey! Let's have fun and fuck!" ..... yea, it's not a great movie now that I think about it.
I kind of actually feel that might be the message. Fritz doesn't really grow in the end, which kind proves he himself is just another, exaggerated sterotype: the lazy youth. He has all these experiences, yet learns absolutely nothing.
It aged incredibly well. If Fritz was a college kid today, he'd be out rioting and destroying mom and pop shops in the name of "sticking it to the man". Because destroying a poor Serbian family's corner store really shows Wall Street.
You should check out this old French movie called "Fantastic Planet". It's pretty weird at times and there is various elements of nudity, but I feel like you could still enjoy it, even if you only plan on watching it for fun.
I saw that recently, it was only on the second viewing that I even realized it had *any* nudity because of the way it's glossed over by all the weird things going on.
I saw this recently as well and I LOVED it. After viewing it a second and third time, a lot of little details that are kind of presented as throw-aways and filler actually add to the story and its' intrigue.
It's odd that animation came to be associated with kids when the Flintstones was more of a 'family show' (the first sitcom with pregnancy in it was flintstones IIRC) EDIT - you showed the flintstones about a second after i posted this lol
: I actually saw this in the theater as a kid. My family worked security, and I got to see several "age-inappropriate" films during th@ time. The 70's we're pretty cool.
I saw this film ages ago and IMO it's a very disorganized, pretentious mess. Fritz is not just a flawed character, he's an unlikeable asshole who uses people and has the gall to assume the moral high ground when commenting on certain situations that occur in the film. I liked Wizards more.

Great review! I believe that the main value of Fritz, is that it reflex the very soul of the world post 60's: the confusion, the social problems, the corruption, the lack of morals, the sordidness of the time, and even the contradictions on the main character, but seen with the hyperbolic lenses of animation, which made it even more unconfortable to see. Animation didn't used to do that back then, and even if the film is a bit disjointed, that reflects the very spirit of its time. I hope you review more of Bakshi's work, all of his films have something remarkable to talk about.
It's basically a proof of concept; a giant middle finger to anyone who thought something like this couldn't succeed. The opening scene that makes a commentary on youth activism and the visuals when Duke dies are more than worth giving it a watch. I also highly recommend American Pop.
@Nonaya Bidness I didn't think it was amazing, but there were parts I liked. Obviously, it's significant in terms of film and animation history. Is there a problem?
@Nonaya Bidness Which is what a lot of the original source is. In this particular instance, the director - who's very weird - wanted it to be crude. It's an adaptation of an already crude and political property into a movie that came out in the early 70's. This was the "free love" and "fuck the man" time. Simply making this movie was a middle finger to the industry. Beyond that, there were a few moments of decent commentary, and I can think of at least one sequence that was genuinely good filmmaking, when Duke the crow gets shot and his life and death are visually represented by a game of pool. And all that because the self-absorbed main character wanted to feel good about himself for representing a cause, even though it led to unnecessary destruction. In many ways, the movie is just as relevant now as it was back then. I'm not saying you have to like it, but your subjective opinion doesn't make it objectively bad.
@@emmahollow8898 I have a similar attitude. There are some good visuals and a few moments of good commentary, but I wouldn't say it's amazing. Definitely a milestone for film and animation.
One of my favorite aspects of this movie was the background artwork. Novel, dark, very surrealistic. Super kudos to whoever did that. Reminded me of some of Don Martin's work, and this kind of thing would have been right down his alley.

I must be older than most of the commenters here, because I don't see anyone mentioning Skip Hinnant. When I first rented this back in the 80's, my first thought when hearing Fritz's voice was 'Oh my god! That's the guy from 'The Electric Company'! I also said the same exact thing the first time I saw 'Street Smart'.
This films style always gave me a very specific nostalgic feeling that I couldn’t really put my finger on but recently I finally got it. It reminds me of as a 5 year old going to one of my family members old bar in Puerto rico with the jukebox playing 70s-80s music and a ps2 connected to an old fuzzy crt playing the TMNT tie in game
Fritz the Cat seems kinda interesting to me, but less for the movie in of itself and more so for the ways that make it a period piece to give a small outlook at the political/social landscape of the time, as well as the historical part of being the first made modernized American hentai. It's kinda like watching the Roundhay Garden scene from 1888 to see how far we've come in different moments in cinema, including animation history.
@maju I guess it depends on how well versed most audiences would be about hentai/porn during the time the movie is released? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Felix the Cat's animated sex scenes might be not as explicitly hentai-like by nowadays standards, but during the '60s and '70s it probably might've seem like a shock factor for audiences that may have been so used to seeing animation usually being marketed for kids.
So long as I die covered in blood that's not my own, I could care less what words I speak as it happens lol Fuck, I'd probably be laughing come to think of it ☠️
I would recommend “down and dirty duck” about as raunchy as this movie but much more bizarre and absolutely forgotten by many, undoubtedly one of my weirdest watches of all time. Released two years after Fritz somewhat pioneered the adult animation scene.
I've seen DaDD and I have no idea what to think about it. It's like if someone recorded a drunk telling what he thinks is a funny story then animating every word of it.
@@TheMightyPika that's basically what happened, the main 2 voice actors were Flo and Eddy, basically two guys that were part of the Turtles and then Frank Zappa's band who started their own comedy rock thing. Dirty Duck was esentially them doing improv with a few other people and then the studio Murakami-Wolf animated it. It really suffered from trying to portray itself as an out and out Fritz rip off instead of the improv-based project that it was. But then again, Bakshi also liked using freely recorded dialog from his surroundings (the scene in the synagogue in Fritz is partly a recording of his father and uncles having a conversation IIRC), so comparisons are unavoidable
The rocky production Bakshi's movies feel like movies in of themselves. Almost every single movie nearly gets cancelled, has its budget cut , has people leave or people trying to straight up sabotage them. Hell at one point an executive straight up banned Bakshi from his own studio before investors pitched in

It's funny how animation became just for children (in the West, at least) for a while. Originally, this wasn't the case. Most Hanna-Barbera shows were originally geared towards adults as the target audience but deliberately made to be suitable for children too so the whole family could watch. Later these same shows, including the series (AKA seasons) originally aimed at adults, were repackaged for children because it was seen as more profitable. It very easily could have gone the other way and cartoons could have been predominantly adult oriented as originally intended.
TBH, controversial animated even animal furry films like that weren't meant for kids before South Park, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Futurama and many adult toons even movies contributing the first X-Rated most successful movie ever made by Ralph Bakshi. I love that film because of the animation. FYI, most of the animators are from the Looney Tunes cartoons even the Pink Panther shorts. It's very recognizable how those animators made the character's movements in their style. GREAT REVIEW, STEVE!
The political tone of this film is kind of reflective on 2020. I mean think about it, the only thing that's missing is the air force bombing the riots.
Weird thing, the US already had done aerial bombardment of a "riot" (more like massacre since it was done against inoffensive people... Who happen to be black) in Tulsa in 1921...

The Nostalgia Critic reviewed it and I mention him because his review is how I know of the film. But some evil guy wants to use the dinos in his circus - the unaltered versions of course.

I also get his irritation with this movie as soon as I had drawn and delivered it to Egmond in Finland my art was owned by Disney and still is I have seen some terrible versions of my art over the decades some to the nightmarish point so, I get his disgust with this movie one 100%.
The thing is, the film is not even erotic. The sex scenes aren't exciting, they're disturbing (and not just because they're furries), and I'm 99% sure that was by design. I unironically think people like the movie because of the story and social commentary rather than the sexual scenes

Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss: *Offensive and swears a lot*
Fritz the cat: "Allow me to introduce myself"
They’re better than this tbh
Let's have fun and fuck!"
..... yea, it's not a great movie now that I think about it.
I kind of actually feel that might be the message. Fritz doesn't really grow in the end, which kind proves he himself is just another, exaggerated sterotype: the lazy youth. He has all these experiences, yet learns absolutely nothing.
I loved it
It aged incredibly well. If Fritz was a college kid today, he'd be out rioting and destroying mom and pop shops in the name of "sticking it to the man". Because destroying a poor Serbian family's corner store really shows Wall Street.

@Nonaya Bidness So, you watched the whole movie despite thinking it was shit?
Even then, you not liking something doesn't make it bad.
This movie is pretty alright and kinda hot in some scenes goddamn. But I would say I respect the film more than I like it. 6/10

My favourite scene in this movie is the SJW one. those three girls are talking to a crow, talking about how much they support black people, but are unintentionally being extremely racist. It’s uploaded somewhere on youtube.
Sounds like liberals
Hahahahhahahahha
This is the scene you're talking about.

That was part of what Crumb didn't like; the portrayal of left-wing activists as insincere and ignorant. Personally, I think it was spot-on. Just as relevant now as it was back then.

Yes, please
Bruh yesss that was a childhood movie
That movie actually made me tear up
Yess
Holy guacamole!! I love that picture of Frodo at 3:45 in the background! So cool!
I remember a few years back I went to my cousin's "concert" at this shitty, hole in the wall biker bar and this was being projected on the wall of the bar. Since my cousin was on stage there wasn't any actual sound so I was really confused as to what was even going on
"Fuck a duck man! We're in the desert!" Endless quotes from Fritz...love that movie!!!
yeah, Robert Crumb really hates this movie calling it in a written interview ''80 minutes of vomit eh, not from the screen but from me''
I met crumb on several occasions on markets, cons, and fairs having to do with 78 rpm records we both collect 78 rpm records we both draw he did the underground I did European Disney comics for a while freelance we are both pretty much loners so, we didn't bother each other except record talk and the same dinner at the same table I don't really want his autograph and he doesn't want to give any so we were just fine there! we got on like a house on fire after the firemen already left!! eh, I don't think we ever will be great friends, and the only reason I remember him is that he's freaking Robert Crumb!!!!! probably the same on the other side so he likely does not remember me at all! but that's ok not that he's unkind or nasty no he's hard to befriend and so am I.
if you worked for Disney, people want and expect stuff from you so you get distrustful at times ''here's another dumbo who wants a Donald Duck drawing for his wall'' so I get it I get where he's coming from completely!
I also get his irritation with this movie as soon as I had drawn and delivered it to Egmond in Finland my art was owned by Disney and still is I have seen some terrible versions of my art over the decades some to the nightmarish point so, I get his disgust with this movie one 100%.
whoa... intriguing!
I would love to hear more from your stories!
*Steve:* "$90 mil at the box office"
*Me:* Wow that's a concerning number of furries...
Revolutionary
I thought the same thing.😄
More like wow this movie made alot of furries. This and Robin Hood.
The thing is, the film is not even erotic. The sex scenes aren't exciting, they're disturbing (and not just because they're furries), and I'm 99% sure that was by design. I unironically think people like the movie because of the story and social commentary rather than the sexual scenes
1972 was a weird year at the box office, You had two hard core Pornographic movies in the top ten at the box office that year (Deep throat and Behind the Green Door) As well as The Godfather and the musical cabaret, a pg romantic comedy called what’s up doc and off course Fritz the cat
know what I've noticed with this review and I am about 40% through it
STEVE SOUNDS 100 TIMES MORE CONFIDENT sounds like he's found his stride and he's just running with it so that sounds great
I just watched this for the first time a few days ago and I'll say its one of those movies I'm glad I've seen but wouldn't watch often like not more than once every couple years or so, i like the animation style, music, and the vibe of the environment but not enough for it to make it's way into a regular rotation of movies to watch often
Dont worry about losing ad revenue. You got about six midroll ads in total there
