About me: I am Maya. I graduated from Parsons School of Design and moved to Germany to work as a designer
Major: Communication Design

If you want any help or advice on transferring from a small college outside the US, leave a comment and I'll reply!

hey did u transfer through isdi or by yourself?
Interesting concept with the threads.
Do you know the german phrase "roter Faden"?
The thread would be the "rote Faden" throughout your style.
Thank you @PeterMeyer I haven't heard of rote Faden. I'll look it up
Hi Im currently planning to transfer into some of the art schools you've mentioned from a South Korean university and I'd love to thank you for making this video😉 It's so helpful, especially cuz I'm in the same major
Thank you so much @MerylCho메릴쵸! Good luck with your applications!!
@@mayasart6639 Hi, thanks for the comment:) Btw I was wondering if you could do a video on your parsons challenge some day?? I'd really appreciate it. I am working on my apps these days and your portfolio video is always really helpful.
hey, could i contact you regarding some college advice ?
I know this video is a little old now, but would I require my highschool GPA to transfer? I did my schooling through an open board and that means I skipped 11th grade. Do americans unis just take your 2 years of college gpa?
How did u find the communication design program
Which design college in India did you attend?
Hi I loved your work!! Did u do an undergrad or a PG at Parsons? also which scholarship did u get ?
Thank you @SivaS !! I did my undergrad at Parsons (3rd and 4th year). I got a merit scholarship. Everyone is automatically eligible for the scholarship when they apply :)
Hey! I hope you are doing great:) I loved your portfolio especially the embroidered one. I so connect with it. I am doing my bachelor of fine arts from Chandigarh university with the specialisation in painting and I am thinking of moving to U.S.A. for my masters degree. I would like to know about few universities along with full funded scholarships.
Hey! thanks a lot :)
Sure, I'm happy to help. What exactly do you want to know?
Hi are there any particular no of pieces to submit? I mean I mostly do graphic design stuff and have 1-2 pieces in other mediums, so is it fine to submit 1 from each medium or do we need more? Someone please give an answer
Hi! For Parsons, I submitted 10 (including my parsons challenge) and RISD's limit is upto 15 but I submitted 11 or 12. I'd say 1 from each medium is good. It's better to have more graphic design work. I had stronger concept art work so that's what I submitted more of those pieces
@@mayasart6639 Thank you so much it was really helpful :)
hey Maya, first of all, Great Job, and Congrats that was a really great portfolio !!! Secondly, Are you from Kerala? , If so ME too ( proud to see a fellow Malayali creating such a masterpiece) . I am also an art enthusiast and would love to go to RISD to take an undergrad degree, But I am not sure if I should join any college in India and then get a transfer to RISD , can you please let me know your opinion ?. Also, did u have to take any exam to get transferred, if so can you please mention it. ( Hopefully, the comment reaches you and you reply)
Hi Snigdha,
Thanks a lot :) I would definitely recommend going to an Indian college for a year and transferring to RISD in your second year. I didn't have to take any exam to transfer. I just had to do a design challenge as part RISD's admission process.
Hi! absolutely in awe of your portfolio! Which is the post-modern impressionist painting you have used in your art installation?
Hey! thank you so much. It's called Erna with Cigarette
Ohmygod this is Brilliant!! honestly one of the best portfolios ive seen dude.
Thank you so much!! @NoorFathimaB
What about your extracurriculars.. Like any competitions?
Hey! Absolutely loved your portfolio 🤩 I just wanted to know were you required to submit a TOEFL score and how much time did you have to submit it after completing the application?
Hey Ria! I did my TOEFL exam in September
Hey i had a few questions 1. is transfer to parsons from isdi an easier route.
2. Does english proficiency test required for transfer
3. what subjects work did u add for your portfolio from ISDI
4. Any tips or topics which i can include for my portfolio and application?
1. I wouldn't say it's easier. I've head they take only one student per batch(this may not be true but it was in my case) so if you have a strong portfolio your chances are decent.
2.Yes, I took the TOEFL exam in September
3. I added work from my TIME class, interaction design and core typography classes
4. Try to add your most conceptual pieces that have a lot of symbolism. Introducing your Indian culture (in a global way) is a great asset too. I would showcase work that explores what your Indian culture means to you, or what interesting elements of India's visual culture inspire you (I would avoid stereotypical Indian things like rangolis and stuff).
can u tell me how can i make my own portfolio for applying to the master degree program in RISD or any art school please suggest me im in my Final year of B.F.A in applied art which is also known as graphic design and visual communication From JNAFAU, Hyderabad , India
Hi @SaiSatosh, I did my bachelor's degree at Parsons. I haven't done my masters yet so I'm not too sure how to help there!
Hey Maya,
I loved each and every piece, especially the way you explained them.
I am also a prospective transfer student from ISDI. I would be transferring for my junior year. What would you advice, considering I’m a fashion design major? Should my portfolio be more fashion centric?
Did u get in? How is the transfer process looking now
I am also planning to apply in uni also .it's helping me a lot.💖💖💖Please can you do a how to apply for scholarships for painting uni video 📷 it would be nice to watch also.💖💖💖
Hi, sure :)
Hey, I was wondering what and how did you apply for the scholarships? I'm from a lower middle class in India and I really really wanna study in RISD so please help me out
Hi :) I didn’t apply for a scholarship. Everyone who applies is automatically considered for a merit scholarship
@@30rock9 thank you so much for replying. I have more questions though. Is there any way I can contact you? Email or perhaps Instagram even?
@@alienxpride hey, you can message me on Instagram @mayaaeapen
Hi where did you transfer from?
Hey, from ISDI in Mumbai
Hey, great video, I am wondering whether to transfer to sophomore year this year or junior year next year. What factors do you think I should consider the most while applying to transfer to Parsons?
I would transfer as soon as possible. I really wish I had more time at Parsons to learn more. By the junior year, you're expected to know which field of design within your major you want to pursue in the future (ie: for communication design, do you want to work in branding, UI/UX, film...). I think the Sophomore year at Parsons will really help you decide which field you want to get into.
@@mayasart6639 that makes a lot of sense, thank you.Do you have any advice on the portfolio and parsons challenge part? I only have till March 1st for the whole application process and am ngl I am lowkey panicking
@@manyamankad9768 haha don't worry! Parsons likes a lot of conceptual pieces. I would suggest using work that reflects the way you see the world through art or design. Try to include some pieces with your Indian culture (not conventional motifs like rangolis and lotuses) but work that captures interesting aspects of Indian visual culture. For the Parsons challenge, I made a list of my strengths and skills that Parsons values and tried to create something that combined the two. I made my own typeface for the challenge. Also, don't forget to document your process. It's super important.
I would also suggest including 1-3 technical pieces if you feel they're very strong
