At the time when western countries were developing itself (way back in the 18th century), they never had it in their priority to legalize any form of same sex relationship. Instead, they focused on expanding their influence across the globe through colonization. The discussion of same sex relationship or marriage is a huge distraction to the government and people of all African nations. African nations cannot afford any form of distraction. There're more important issues in Africa to resolve than the legalization of same-sex marriage. I believe that same-sex relationship will grow into being accepted by the people of Africa at some point, but for the time-being, African nations have other things to worry about like creating an environment that'll encourage its people to work, invent, invest, and leave happy in Africa. Western journalists are notoriously known for pushing the button too far, especially on agendas related to same-sex relationship. I think everything is a process. A time will come when things will be good in Africa, but for now, things aren't. I think African nations should not be forced in running into a future that they're not prepared for. I advice western nations to assist African nations in finding the right feet to walk, then encourage them to walk on their own independently before proposing the idea of asking them to run like other developed countries in the world.

Gay rights may be a priority for the western world, however, what Quest misses here is the context of the Zimbabwean situation. Regardless of what the world thinks, ED Mnangagwa campaigning for gay rights would be the death of his political life. I can understand how this must be baffling to him living in the United States just as the Gun Rights are confusing to much of the world. President Mnangagwa cannot at this juncture push for gay rights at this moment. Quest is conveniently ignoring a constitution because this issue was addressed and the people of the country voted against granting those rights as an affront to their moral standing. Wrong or Right, Mr Quest must understand this context rather attempt to shove it down the throats of a people not ready for his version of human rights. It is rather ominous his attempt to link FDI to gay rights. This is what angers the developing world. Countries must be allowed to progress within their context and it a pace suitable to it, it took the US more than 100 years and many movements to get to the level of human rights consciousness that they now have.
I personally have no problems with gay rights, but I totally understand the view of my people and why the President cannot champion this campaign at this time.

    • @vinceangel6752

You are right Mkoma. I believe that these Western/American journalists/activists, know the context of Zimbabwe and how gay rights are viewed, they do. They know that is a non issue in most African countries. The reason why they push it,- Is simply because it is the new movement of social progress. Here is where I am at: the fast track is for Economic development is tolerance and acceptance not all that free and fair elections The President is talking about, the west cares less about that than they do for gay rights. If Gay rights are granted in Zimbabwe, suddenly we will become the most accepting and progressive African country ready for investment. It will put us on the World map as a Nation of people ready to work with the world and I think our Government should put aside whatever bigotry and homophobia they have for the sake of our county. Here is a thought experiment, would you compromise your deeply held beliefs if it would save your children's lives or get your mother medical treatment she needs?, I would!, that doesn't make me a sellout or a man with no integrity, rather it makes me a person who love their family so much that they will do anything to take care of them. Fighting the United states and Western Europe/common wealth is a waste of time, we are the ones who will suffer, we have suffered enough already, Let the gay people have rights. Because if im being honest, sooner or later / somehow Zimbabwe and Africa will embrace gay rights. Remember its not even a decade ago that gay marriage was legal in USA, They also denied gay rights at some point, their politicians were Homophobic at some point and most of them still are but now its political suicide in USA to be openly homophobic. The world is progressing, lets progress with it. Yes we may not like this kind of progress but we don't pick and chose how the world progresses we accept and adapt. Its a matter of time, so why not pay it forward, lets do it now in Zimbabwe and be a pioneer and ripe the benefits sooner.

    • @2TenTV

Those are your thoughts. In Zimbabwe, we are still battling with early marriages and other human right problems. Mind you I'm currently in Australia and the Same Sex Marriage bill that passed was much more of a political move and the process is not done yet but its because a few group of people want to stay in power they end up pushing this things.

How can a country function for who when the people ain't happy and not fully given their rights even those like the small gift of having to love freely make your people happy allow them to express themselves more those are the people that will generate income for you as a country and help the country build stronger relationships and walls with other countries

Standing strong on his views for Zimbabwe. Like he said there country doesn't bother western culture and you can not force some from Zimbabwe to be a follower. Talk about taken their provisions away and God says the wealth of the wicked is stored up for the righteous. Fear the lord not man.

why does Richard think opening up gay rights means we will become more modern. I believe Zimbabwe will become the last nation in Africa to allow that, it is not in our culture. Yes, we are western to the point that u can have a good conversation with an old man in the streets in English even as Zimbabweans having influential positions in the diaspora but we have morals and standards we grow up with. ZvemuTV zvekuUS and SA ndopazvinogumira, we are intelligent enough to know "1+1=2"

I think I wouldn't have allowed the journalist to talk with his fingers on my face..but anyone should canvass for their own seemingly obstructed rights..That's how we develop..we dont just agree to everything..as much as colonialism was protested for a long time without any ear until someone realised he is outnumbered and needs slaves to help in war tactics..
