    I honestly love the parallel of Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu. How the three "Rulers of Japan" differ in their approach and how each are suited to the different time periods that each rule.
    One of these parable discussing about their parallel is how they each respond to a bird that will not sing. Nobunaga will say "Kill the bird", Hideyoshi will say "Make it sing", while Ieyasu will say "Wait for it to sing". This is perhaps stating how Nobunaga forced people to submit, Hideyoshi coaxes and push people to submit, while Ieyasu waits for you to realizes that it is better to submit. Honestly the three Rulers have themselves in different paths when it comes to Unifying Japan. Nobunaga need to show strength and power to make people fear him, Hideyoshi needs to coax people into believing in him after the power vacuum left due to Nobunaga's assassination, whole Ieyasu need people to realizes that post-Hideyoshi he is the best ruler for Japan and not Hideyoshi's children.
    This is also parabled in the children's poem "Nobunaga gathers the ingredient, Hideyoshi pounds the mochi, while Ieyasu comes and eat it."

    • @neh1234
      @neh1234 Год назад +34

      To be fair, Tokugawa was also a warlord. He also had his fair share of opposition afterwards and the way he silenced them was no different than the Oda or Toyotomi did before him. The way Ieyasu Tokugawa profited from Hideyoshi's previous rule was by succeeding an unified Japan, and having the biggest army in the land, thanks to being exempted from conscription in Tokugawa's failed campaign against Korea, which pretty much decimated his power. Hideyoshi dying pretty much handed Ieyasu Tokugawa the rule over Japan on a silver platter.
      Hence the children's poem. Ieyasu Tokugawa is the Luigi of the Sengoku Jidai. He won by doing absolutely nothing, at least compared to his predecessors.

    A major defeat of the Ikko Ike was at a place called Oyama Gobo. Nobunaga then handed it over to his (once disposed) top general, Toshiie Maeda. Maeda took the former Ikko stronghold, built a castle and renamed the town Kanazawa. It became one of the centers of art and culture from about 1600 until the Meiji restoration in the 1850’s. Even today Kanazawa is regarded as one of the finest castle towns with a wealth of art on culture and the best example of a Japanese strolling garden, Kenrokuen.

    Some corrections here:
    1. Imagawa may or may not have been marching on Kyoto. Some speculate the purpose was to get Oda to capitulate and that he didn't have enough troops to make a capital run.
    2. Nobunaga was most certainly not considered to be the most powerful Daimyo after Okehazama. It would take many years and many battles for that to become a reality. Okehazama definitely helped put him on the map though and gave him some notoriety.
    3. The Asakura and Asai had been allies for decades, not a spontaneous union in reaction to Nobunaga's exploits as the video suggests.
    4. Nobunaga did not want to kill every Ikko-Ikki as was evidenced by him allowing Kennyo Kosa and the survivors of the siege, live. He pragmatically realized though that it would take a lot of killing and destruction before the implacable monks would cede power.
    5. Nobunaga was not a homicidal maniac. The brutality against the Ikko Ikki was the exception rather than the rule. To be sure, many daimyo and samurai were executed or forced to commit suicide, but many were spared and absorbed into his ranks as well. It's important to note that the entire country was embroiled in an unending state of civil war for almost 200 years! It would be like if the 50 US states were all at odds with most of each other. Despite that, rather than butchering civilians he invested in improving agriculture and commercial infrastructure with acts like removing toll booths and embracing trade with the Portuguese (whose gadgets and novelties intrigued him). As a collector of ceremonial tea items, he frequently held tea and poetry gatherings with contemporaries who were considered to be culturally astute by the standards of the time.
    6. Not a correction per se, but some additional insight: Akechi Mitsuhide (the man who betrayed and killed Nobunaga) had apparently been publicly insulted by Nobunaga on numerous occasions (potentially due to jealously as Mitsuhide was considered competent as is evidenced by Nobunaga entrusting him with a large invasion army) and many speculate that his high position in the clan was not sufficient to offset the abuse he endured, the end result being a rather impulsive and not particularly well thought out rebellion. He failed to ensure the Mori, who his colleague turned adversary Hideyoshi was battling with, were aware of the opportunity and too few of the Kyoto region Daimyos he gambled on supporting him actually did.
    It's fascinating to speculate what would have happened had Nobunaga lived. Unlike his successors, he was willing to tolerate foreign trade so isolationist Japan may have never existed which would have had a remarkable ripple effect on history. Nobunaga's legacy may well be a lesson towards leaders to exercise temperance and moderation when engaging your subordinates or, failing that, ensure you provide them with scant opportunities to exercise any grudges they may possess.

    Some things Mitsi missed:
    - During the second Ishiama Hongan-Ji siege, the Mori clan, God of Naval Warfare helped the Ikko Ikki survive longer.
    - The Ikko Ikki wasn't as anti violent as you'd think, they blocked trade routes, evaded taxes, joined the alliance against Nobunaga and not to mention took an ENTIRE country for themselves (Kaga region)
    - the Oda clan didn't just face of the Asakura and Azai alliance alone, the Tokugawa (Masudaira) clan also joined in the war, the battle (if I remember correctly) was more disastrous, because of shitty timing, the Azai-Asakura alliance hit a surprise attack against them, since Nobunaga didn't get to get his formation to go where he wants to in the time, his lines were WRECKED, on the other hand, the Tokugawa army had more numbers than the enemy, driving them out before helping Nobunaga.
    Feel free to add more.

    Oda Nobunaga, (born 1534, Owari province, Japan-died June 21, 1582, Kyōto), Japanese warrior and government official, overthrew the *Ashikaga (or Muromachi)* shogunate (1338-1573) and ended a long period of feudal wars by unifying half of the provinces in Japan under his rule.

    Oda Nobunaga actually fought against Akechi troops during the Honnoji Incident where he used his bow and arrow taking pot shoots at any troops that get too close to his room. After running out of arrows and attempting to pick up a spear, Nobunaga realized everything is lost and then commit seppuku with Ranmori being his Kaishaku

    Would eager to replicate the history of Oda Nobunaga and his Oda clan by playing Total War: Shogun 2. I remember that my older brother played that game and picks the Shimazu clan just to take over the whole Japanese map in a very hard campaign difficulty, and told me that the Oda clan was difficult to play in the game (Because you are positioned between two fronts).

    • @martinfischer3824

    • @martinfischer3824
      @martinfischer3824 Год назад +3

      @@dark_winter8238 yup it just doesnt make sense. Why would CA make a cheap ashigaru unit litterally unbeatable from the front. I think the only unit that could defeat them while they were in their spearwall was some hero unit which was much more expensive. And even they suffered extremely high casualties.
      Typical CA moment
