  • Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice - album out 18 May 2018.
    warnerclassics...
Star countertenor Philippe Jaroussky continues his exploration of operatic settings of the Orpheus myth with the most famous of the many operas inspired by the story of the Greek poet who searches for his dead wife in the Underworld: Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. It contains one of the world's best-loved operatic arias, Orfeo's restrained, but moving lament, 'Che farò senza Euridice'.
Conducted by Diego Fasolis, his is the world premiere recording of a version of the opera that was performed at the Royal Palace in Naples in 1774, 12 years after Orfeo ed Euridice was staged in Vienna as the first of Gluck's 'reform operas'. In these works Gluck emphasised simplicity of form and directness of expression, consciously rejecting the extravagances of opera seria, which dominated the early 18th century and was typified by convoluted plots and extended showpiece arias.

This is what Philippe said about the aria: (Sorry I can't remember where I got this)
"The first time I heard this aria did not touch me much. It was when I took her to the stage when she captivated me. After an hour of opera, with Eurydice dead, I am able to narrate all the emotion contained in this moment. I think that this aria does not work very well in a recital, we need all the opera to really understand its meaning. This simple melody is the lost happiness of the two lovers. It's the way Gluck says to the singer: "You have to forget technique and virtuosity and say things in the simplest way possible." I have never sung this aria in a recital, only with the full opera. If the song separated from the rest becomes a pretty aria, with a very nice melody, but the impact with the set is totally different. It is striking that at this very dramatic moment - it is the second time that Orpheus loses Eurydice, forever - sing this simple aria, which could even seem happy. "

Marvelous! He doesn't sound as though he's singing in falsetto (even though that's indeed what he's doing); the timbre is so round, so firm that it really sounds like his natural tessitura. And the diction, the phrasing, the tempo are all (to my taste, at least) exactly right. A gorgeous performance!

I mean biomechanically, a male "falsetto" and female "head voice" are the same thing, so it makes sense that a countertenor can train his upper register to get the same quality as a soprano.

Being a classicist, I am lucky to be well acquainted with Vergil's works. The way he depicts Orfeo's pain is unbelievable. And I find it here too. Jaroussky's performance is really great : you can now hear Orfeo's pain. The musician he was, using his voice and lyre, can no longer sing. He moans, he cries. His pain now fills the air. Jaroussky immediately brings me back to this. He sings really amazingly, and the interpretation is all the more amazing.

Beethoven actually ranked GLUCK with Mozart !... A rather fine referral..wouldn't you say ?.... In the Movie " Amadeus " Gluck was given monumentally short shrift........they had to get Gluck out of the narrative .....because he was a vastly greater Composer than Salieri, and they couldn't let the audience hear his magical work....just the way Tom Hulce was cheated from getting the Oscar in the Movie " Amadeus " in the. biggest fiasco in the Academy's History ! .....Make a Movie about Gluck, Mr. Hulce !... This time you can't miss !!!!!!!

So good. So great. The Vocalist sings Divine-sounding Music in a boffo Recording Session; & just the way that he wants-to-do it: "Faithful to the Score!"
