    This was by far the most entertaining stage so far. Stop the whining, don't forget that professional sports can only exist if they can provide something exciting to watch. Enough snooze fests on perfect conditions. A stage like this once in a while is a welcome change.

      Stop whining about the whining. First, if you were bored this year prior to this stage, there is something seriously wrong with you. Second, they changed things up by starting in Italy and starting with tough mountains. Too much new simply for the sake of being new is called Jumping the
      Shark. If you transform the show into something it's not, by definition, it's no longer the same. I personally would love to see one stage with the peloton ski jumping. THAT would be different, and I bet it wouldn't even be Roglic who won. Exciting indeed. But also would no longer be the Tour de France. If Merckx didn't do it in a Tour de France, it doesn't belong in one. This is a road race, not cyclo-cross.

      @@peterwalsh5068 - I get it. Changing up The Tour is scary for the GC teams. There is an established path to how to win. But this year, and especially this stage has been exciting from the beginning.
      The Tour is won in the mountains, but wouldn't it be amazing to have a year where a rouleur gained time on stages like this?
      Lastly, Henri Desgrange's idea of a perfect Tour is one where only one man survives. If we listened to the riders' wants and wishes we probably wouldn't have mountain stages. In 1910 Octave Lapize famously shouted "Murderers! You're murderers!" at the finish of the stage which had gone over the Tourmalet for the first time and finished on the Aubisque. Part of the "how does he get stronger?" answer comes from Johan's look into some of the top rider's Strava data that revealed that Pogacar, for example, burned just roughly 400 calories per hour during a recent sprinters stage. That is active recovery watts for even an amateur cyclist.

    The first weeks design was perfect for Pog to gain time on Jonas. I have to think that UAE has to be a bit unhappy with the time they have gained so far. Obviously it all depends on Jonas form. If he is riding well the 3rd week should favor him.

    • @J-cz7yv
      @J-cz7yv 3 месяца назад

      Well he did gain time. You have to work within the limits of each stage. First two days were insane hot. 4 there was headwind all the way. 7 more time. Today? It’s a flat stage so not surprising no one gained time. It was still and awesome day today but why should someone expect massive time gaps? Anyways the pressure is on Visma to take time in week 3. We’ll see what kind of pressure their team can apply. Should be great racing.

    Think of the hypothetical scenario where, in 2025, the riders are allowed to do this stage on a full-blown gravel bike:
    - less concerns over punctures and mechanical failures;
    - more speed on the gravel surfaces;
    - bike brands get to place their gravel products on the most important 'storefront' of all;
    - you add an extra point of interest to the race by seeing how the pros give their all on a fat tire bike;
    Imo, all advantages! It would be quite a spectacle.

      Totally agree. I didn't read this before I commented, but we need more stages like this so different types of riders have chances to win stages. All I heard from riders at the finish was how good it was. The Ultimate Grand Tour should be the ultimate test, so there should be gravel and cobbles every year as much as High Mountains, Flat stages and TT's. If the sport is to move on, its stages like today that will sell it, not 200k flat transitional stages where we have the peloton ambling along until the last 10k. It was a great day for cycling.

    It’s way to easy to shoot holes in Johan’s take here. Roubaix is 250KMs with 55KMs of cobbles NOT gravel. Pog said it was nowhere near as hard as riding cobbles. The TDF is about finding the greatest cyclist in the world. This was 20 miles of gravel. 20 miles. One of the best stages I have ever seen in a TDF.

  • @Shantiante
    @Shantiante 3 месяца назад +9

    Cycling is as much an equipement sport as it is a human performance sport. Everything you can say about gravel, cobbles or weather conditions apply to all situations. It's just a matter of how much. TdF is about endurance, survival. These types of stages belong as much as the next.
    TdF didnt even have mountain stages the first what 4 or 5 years? I am sure that riders at the time complained about that as well.

    Both opinions can be true at the same time. Incredible race for the fans, but it would totally suck if one of the big GC guys got ousted. What is riskier to GC contenders, 60 mph downhill finishes or sliding out in a little gravel. I don't know.. at least with gravel the likelihood of dying is reduced, I'm just not sure introducing gravel increases the risk of abandonment. With that said the UCI got lucky on this stage. It feels like the argument is introducing a peril is worse than a dealing with a known peril; which might not be true.

This is true: He has a bigger heart than the rest of us, so he can pump more blood around the body, and gain an advantage on the rest. This was not crazy death defying stuff. 3) That location where they had to dismount spoke more to a lack of scouting and preparation for that section. Many riders didn’t realize that side was looser gravel. It was rideable but some people blew it. That adds to the spectacle without endangering lives. The smart well prepared riders ripped up that hill no problem. And that’s how it should be. We need a variety challenges to determine the best riders and best teams. Please keep the gravel stages!!!

    We need more stages like stage 9 every year.... we took years to move on from the standard opening week or so of flat stages, and multiple 70k TT's... these stages are the future if cycling wants to broaden its fan base and gain further investment. Can't keep living in the dark ages. Its important to have stages that suit different types of riders not just GC climbers and a dozen sprinters. I bet the classic riders weren't complaining, there should be a more equal balance of stages for all types of riders. Crashes and bad luck can happen on any stage. Its time Grand Tour cycling moved on. One of the best stages I have watched this year.... I'm not greedy I just want more. If your going to win a GT make sure its a proper test of skill as well as how many watts/ kilo you can do uphill.

  • @markangos66

    I am sorry, huge fan, but Johan is wrong on this one. Professional cycling is on life support. Very old demographic. Decreasing viewership. This is the kind of change that is necessary for it to survive. Bad luck is a necessary element of professional sports. Own goals, hail mary passes etc. Logistical nightmare? Look at how ingenuity thrives with teams devising novel plans to mitigate uncontrollable variables. This is how bike racing should be! And when you see riders hiking their bikes, it also made professional cycling so relatable. I mean how many of us don’t hike our bikes on a steep hill. This stage could be a gateway for casual cyclists and viewers to TDF, paving the way for a bigger audience appreciating the sport.

It's road cycling, not super-smooth paved road cycling, sometimes there are gravel roads.

    Mentioning Tom Pidcock makes me think that he desperately needs to leave Ineos, it will kill his career - he looks miserable over the last few months when his schedule was changed. Ineos have made the decision to back Rodríguez and Bernal over Pidcock. Shame as Rodríguez is just a Dani Martinez clone (boring), and Bernal is not the rider he was in in 2019, neither winners, just top ten.

    This is like taking a 200m Olympic sprint. And adding some hurdles to the race to make it harder. This is a sprint race not hurdles.

  • @33samogo
    @33samogo 2 месяца назад

    I enjoy strade bianche on TDF with some but. Even the race was hard and stressful, the gravel sectors were not difficult enough to allow attacks. So the question is why to include SB in TDF if the race does not present a problem to the best? It is the same as a sprint race where you cannot attack before last 300m because you will be caught. I don't know who is the winner of this gravel stage, the gravel specialist certainly isn't. We saw that neither the fall of Vlasov, nor the punctured tube of Jonas, nor the complete stoppage of part of the peloton with Roglič did not pose a problem for the best to return in to the race, so even the bad luck is not a counter-argument to have SB on TDF, but the hardens of sectors that not allow significant attacks is. The TDF needs to challenge the best riders in many categories, the beginnings of TDF were on gravel roads, so the gravel is part of the family and with today trends can not be excluded anymore. JB critics on UCI are not justified in this perspective, the race is fresh and entertaining, the UCI is reacting instantly on modern racing trends, so they are no dinosaurs.
    Pog attack was tactically questionable, it is ok to bring back Remco, but not attacks with Jonas and his teammate glued on the rear wheel, he repeat old mistake, does he expect the cooperation from Visma?! The problem is not that he attacks, but how he attacks. This may cost him the TDF because Jonas is strong, I don't know how strong the head wind was, but it looked like Pog didn't have strong enough legs to make a difference, and this is already an alarm to change the way he races, where it will be necessary to conserve the energy with essential less blind attacks in the next week.
    I like Remco more and more, aerodynamic litle bastard will attack when you least expect it, he is a great champion.

What would those riders say, if, for example, all of a sudden a 20 km 8,5% steep high mountain would be added to Paris Roubaix? Mountain are Part of cycling....so that should not be a problem. There are a lot of parrallels between a gravel stage like this in the Tour and golf events like the US Open, where the setups are next level difficult. Yes they require planning and yes there is an element of luck, but there is a reason they are incredibly popular and increase awareness of the sport. The whining by teams and riders (same as the pro golfers bitch about tough course setups, hard greens, deep rough, etc.) that there is too much luck involved is total BS. Hell they can get wiped out on any given stage, downhill descent, etc. ASO should continue to add these type of stages despsite the bitching, or teams have the option to sit it out! There were more attacks and compelling watching on this stage, than many I can think of over the years! I think every Tour route should have gravel and cobbles, while they are at it... bring back the TTT!!!

    Hi from Denmark. Jonas said to Danish TV, that he would rather be without those kind of stages, in a grand Tour. Especially The Tour De France, he said in all honesty. Maybe the stage was more suited to Pogacar and Evenepoel? It seems that way to me, when the 3 of them, was on their own. Jonas did not pull, and as he said afterwards, it wouldn't make any sense for him to do. He rather wait for he´s teammates, and of course it was the right move. Evenepoel, on the toher hand, told the press afterwards, that maybe Jonas didn´t have the balls today, to race with us? Hmm, maybe Remco E. still has a bit of a youngster going on inside, on a few occasions (just saying) ;-) He would surely gain from it, taking time on Roglic, but again, not very smart if a puncture happened? So i think Jonas and Visma, in that situation, played it smart, and the Tour now goes on, with everything resetting. How about that. Cheers from Denmark.
