Quorthon.....One of(if not the) the Most influential Men in Extreme Metal History....The Pioneer that Lead to 2 very prominent sub genre's of Metal that with Hold Many more Legendary bands who he influenced(Emperor, Dissection, Amon Amrath, etc...)
In the beginning of the 80s this swedish band was one of the early pioners of black metal along with Venom and Metcyful Fate. After some early records with crappy sound they moved away from the black metal genre Into viking metal. IMO their masterpiece are the album Hammerheart. The vocalist/songwriter and guitarist behind this band died from heartattack many years ägo. RIP mr Forsberg
Bathory was very much a one man band. Tomas Forsberg alias Quorton wrote, sang and played most of the music and produced it with help from his father with a pretty low budget. Some shorter periods of time Bathory had others in the "band" to play.
Quorthon was a master of his genres of music, he created Viking metal, blood fire death was more or less his first venture into viking metal(1988). Quorthon played every instrument in bathory he was apart of bathory from its inception in 1983 until his sudden death in 2004.
So, and this is no secret, Quorthon liked MANOWAR a lot and that can be seen in the lyrics here. Some lines even copied from MANOWAR - The Sign of the Hammer album. Great stuff. bathory was great. Really great.
Hailing from Denmark. I have to comment this. For my Bathory was the former of BLACK METAL ! Bands like Sodom or Celtic Frost was also in the 1. wave when bands like Venom not was the real deal ! I was used to tape the first albums before we went into the woods to hears the new Bathory. When I mean tape it is meaning that no one heard the new album before we were gathering deep in the woods !! We also started to hear the first album and so on. I remember when we with fire, alcohol, cannabis and the right clothes like cutter heard this album after the hillarious album "Under the sign of the black mark" . I love raw black metal but I could consume the shift to viking metal ! Bathory is with the black metal and the viking metal STILL my favorite : Hail the hordes ! We have to create !
I kinda like how you can see the transition bathory makes. They started off heavily influenced by venoms album, black metal, and for a while stuck with that but slowly attained their own sound and started creating their style sound and concepts.
Man, I was just 14 when I got this album in 1989 (This was released 1988). It still sound so fresh. It's not the perfect record (vinyl), but masterpiece still.
You just forgot to mention that Quorthon was 17 years old when recording this album and created 2 kind of music. Black metal (at 14 years old) and epic/viking with this one)
This vocalist sounds like Johnny Rotten from The Sex Pistols you know if he sang metal instead of punk xD lol Vocalists vocal cords are screaming, "help ussss!" Lmao xD

No synthesizers were used on the album...
Actually I think synthesizrs was used. Hear thise choir sounding background.
I would say that's a choir or choir pad...female and a hint of male in there I think.
We need more black metal here.
