Are products like revolution or advantage multi both systematics and repellants?
Neither product has repellent function.
Revolution gets absorbed from the skin and acts as a systemic parasite killer. Advantage Multi (also a killer, not a repellent) has two components - one of them gets absorbed, the other does not, so regarding action the product is partially topical and partially systemic.
Do you mind if I ask which one you prefer? I have had dogs for 10 yrs now. The first vet I took my old dog to recommended Advantage multi. However the vet I've been taking my dogs to for 7+ yrs now really pushes Revolution. I've been giving my border collies Revolution for 7 + yrs now. So far so good. My dog (I only have 1 now, the other was stolen) is a city dweller and sleeps with me in my apartment. I take him for walks several times a day.
They have similar antiparasitic spectrums so I wouldn't say I have a strong preference. Revolution has a confirmed effect against the American dog tick too which Advantage Multi doesn't, but since they are in the same drug family, I wouldn't be surprised if Advantage Multi had some anti-tick action as well (just not experimentally proven). But that's just speculation. If you're using the products mainly for heartworm prevention, I don't think that the choice matters. (For dogs infected with heartworms I'd probably suggest Advantage Multi to clear microfilaria but I assume your dog is not infected.)
I've read somewhere that Revolution is less greasy than Advantage Multi but I never noticed it myself. (Truth be told, I didn't pay attention to it.)
Man ... Such amazing content... And I've discovered it at a time I really needed clarity regarding preventive methods. I live in India and already have 1 rescue who we've discovered has flea allergic dermatitis. We currently use Frontline plus every month and vaccuum him after every walk for fear or red eruptions... We are in the process of adopting another rescue who is getting over her tapeworm infestation and has just been diagnosed with babeosis (B. Vogeli) and just got injected against it... Our vet has consistently tried to push for us to use Bravecto more than Frontline Plus. We're confused... Since we've read some horror stories about Bravecto and also since it doesn't repel fleas... It works only. After the first bite.... What do you recommend?
Veterinary strength flea medicine is A MILLION TIMES better than over the counter flea medicines like Frontline. Vets only offer THE MOST EFFECTIVE flea medicines. I use bravest on my own cats and they're perfectly fine with no issues (or fleas!). EDIT: I work at a vet and I help people all day with helping choose the right brand of flea medicine. Bravecto is a fantastic brand, as well as: Nexgard, Nexgard PLUS, Simparica TRIO, Advantage Multi, the Seresto collar, or Revolution. All those brands are wonderful!
