    Hello there.
I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how most of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic). The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear.
Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies.
Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1989).
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute 4:45 you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945.
The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal or federal judge helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born.
At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completed how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. It's complicated.
With love from Germany 🤘 😎

weimar wasn't really the first try in democracy tho. First complete implementation would be correct. 1848 was the first try and in the empire the situation wasn't the best but good in comparison to the neigborhood. There have also been other types proto democratic projects before. Republics were plenty in the HRE and some of them were even peasant republics (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bauernrepublik).

I think your desciption of the video is so good. I'm not German myself, and I don't speak German, but I looked at a translation of the lyrics, and to me the song (and video) describes much of what you say, but all in all I get the feeling that it describes a people (germans) that wants to love their country, but at the same time feels hindered because of Germany's history, and the importance of remembrance of the horrible acts that has been done.
Still, Germans of today should be proud of themselves and their country for what it stands for today. It's right to remember ones past, and it's also right to be angry or sad about history. But it belongs to the past, and we can only move forward and be proud of the good things we do today. Many of them are based on our sad and violent history. In my Scandinavian history lies many horrible acts from Vikings for example. Today we remember them - not with always with pride.
There hasn't been that many years since the holocaust, and we all have to remember it and never let it happen again. But we also need to be proud of what we do today.
Germany is a beautiful country with awesome people, who should be proud - be allowed to be proud - of their country.

May I ask you if you felt offendend by the concentration camp scenes in this video? I'm asking because a lot of jews in germany felt very offended, and I didn't quite understand that. Because I felt like Rammstein made a strong statement with these scenes, by solidarizing with ALL victims of the holocaust, including jews, by wearing their symbols and taking their place. And I felt like a lot of people didn't get that.

@@wolfgangengel4835 No, it's a factual reality and while I hate that it happened, while I'm utterly appalled by humans behaving like that it is something that did happen, that is recognised and SHOULD be shown.
It is absolutely necessary that the cruelty is never forgotten, it is through that we understand the perils of fascism.
The problem is that some people rejoice at the display and cherish these ideas. I'd hate them if I could muster it but you really shouldn't hate the severely mentally ill.

There is this dissonance between love and hate and from other comments I can see, that I am not the only one who feels that way. We have a really long history that (depending on whom you ask) goes back to the first three tribes forming an alliance against Varus in the Teutenberg forest 7 a.D. The women represents Germania the personification of Germany. The different scenes are episodes of germany's history with a great love of detail and hidden meanings.
It's a ride trough time from the romans to the space age (not limited only to nazis) for more than 2000 years.
Rammstein tried to explain the feelings of us germans about our nation with all the highs and lows of our past. Lyrics here are only a part of this artwork.
At the end the music becomes sort of melancholic expressing real sadness but also expectations and hope for the future.

the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song:
Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany’s history.
Main scenes of the video: The first scene with the roman soldiers refers to the battle of Teutoburg forest, the first time the German tribes untied under Arminius against the Romans and ambushed them on their march back to their winter camp + completely annihilated several legions - the Romans would never return and fortify at the Rhine - this could be seen as the birth of the German identity.
The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story)
When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII). The standard I guess refers to a relic which was part of the Imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation ("Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation" - the conglomerate of mostly German territories which was ruled by a emperor elected by the highest ranking nobles of the realm and persisted from the 10th century until 1806). This relic, the Lance of Longinus, is dated back to the 8th century and was said to contain in it's tip one of the nails that were used in the crucifixion of Jesus. It was supposed to make any army that carries it into battle invincible. It can still be seen today in a museum called "die Schatzkammer" (the treasure chamber) in Vienna,/Austria the city where I live ;-).
Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born.
Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s.
Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people.
Then the scene in the middle ages - where the monks (representing the church) feast on Germania (the land) and suppress the common folk (underneath the table).
The scene in the prison again refers to the roaring twenties, as Germania is dressed in a Prussian uniform suppressing the German people. Additionally money is thrown away by everybody, a reference to the big inflation in Germany after WWI.
Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for “Vergeltung” which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on “über” a german pre-syllable/prefix meaning over. “Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen“ (Germany, Germany above everyONE). The line „Deutschland, Deutschland über alleN“ (Germany above everyONE) is a reference to one of the verses of former national anthem of Germany which was in use from 1922 to 1945 and got excluded after WW2 for being too nationalistic. In this verse there was a line “Deutschland, Deutschland über alleS“ (a subtle difference to the line in Rammstein’s version translating to “Germany, Germany above everyTHING”). The actual verse with this line was already written in 1842, long before the formation of Germany as a Nation (which only happened in 1871) - therefore “Germany, Germany above everything” was relating to the importance of uniting the several German ministates, kingdoms and Duchies into one nation. After WWI this verse got taken into the national anthem of Germany as it spoke to the patriotism of the German people but later officially excluded from the anthem since it was deemed too nationalistic. Today this verse/line is generally frowned upon and would be associated with Neo-Nationalism. Using this line in the scene with the concentration camps including the subtle change from “Germany above everyTHING” (which has already the nationalistic connotation) to “Germany above everyONE” which carries an even more nationalistic / racist meaning is a very clever double-reference to the doctrine of racial supremacy in the Third Reich.
The Concentration camp prisoners have symbols sewn on their jackets for the groups the Nazis hunted and killed (yellow star for Jews, Pink triangle for Homosexuals, red symbol for political adversaries (communists). Germania is on the side of the Nazis and has an eyepatch (representing the blind eye that many Germans turned on the atrocities of the Nazi regime.
The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called “Rote Armee Fraktion” - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm.
Then there is the scene with the stake at which books are burned by the Nazis and people are burned by the church (inquisition). Later the monk (church) and the Nazi soldier hug (as the church did not go against the Nazis when they came to power and both organizations were responsible for a lot of intolerance and suffering in their times.
The scene where Germania is dressed in white with a Halo I think refers to the positive, the strength of the German people who recovered time after time from several catastrophic disasters in their history. Later she gives birth to puppies representing the German people. The puppies are from a rare breed of dogs (Leonbergers) who’s population got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars. In these scenes the band members wear space suits - in my view a reference to the (hopefully) better future of the German people.
In the very last scene of the outro you can once more see Germania with national colors (black, red gold) with black lipstick, red eyes and golden armor before a red/ black background holding an eagle, the heraldic symbol of Germany. Finally, please find below the lyrics of the song as the perfectly convey the message of the problematic relationship many Germans have to their homeland, wanting to be proud of it but not being able to due to it’s difficult history:
One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their idenitify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.) Here now the lyrics (copied from the internet):
    [Verse 1]
You (You have, you have, you have, you have)
Have cried a lot (Cried, cried, cried, cried)
Separated in spirit (Separated, separated, separated, separated)

    [Bridge]

I (Übermenschen (translates to “superior humans” - a term the Nazis implicitly used for themselves as the calles other races “Untermenschen” - translating to “inferior humans”), weary)
We (The higher you climb, the further you fall)

    [Chorus]
Germany - your heart in flames

"Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people. "
What isn't even true, the government in eastern germany was a placeholder governments, since the DDR was just a blocker state against NATO the soviet union was forced to keep, because our 'free west' was not willing to have a peace treaty and intead created NATO, continued 2.WW under a new name and leadership (now the USA itself - which was a big support of the german Nazi regime, even a long time during the war and only went in, when the regime lost and less about stopping the germans, but the soviets to liberate whole Europe on their own). with nukes at the eastern border, a constant threat to be pushed more east, closer to Moscov if the Soviet Union would retreat one sided.
In contrast to western germany, eastern germany paid a high amount of reperations for all the destruction and death the Nazi regime had caused.
East germany was by the way as little communistic as the soviet union itself. Both had socialistic elements in regard of education, health care, housing and alike, but didn't even reach socialism (even less communism, what could develope out of socialism as an evolution of human society), just state capitalism.
Overall the DDR was enslaved by the Cold War, with the Soviet Union having to hold onto it, while not caring much beyond that, with enough problems on their own after the desaster that was 2.WW with over 27 million dead on Soviet side and gigantic destruction, directly followed by Cold War, where pretty much the same kind of people tried to finish what was started, this time with nukes.

I'm from The Netherlands, but I understand German very well. This must be a very emotional song for Germans. It's about its history from over 2000 years ago till now. Germany has a lot to be proud of, but also a lot to be ashmed of. Just like my country, the UK , France, the USA and to be honest, almost all current countries. The German problem is that the most recent atrocities came from them. The German generation from after WW2 have struggled with it a lot. But I think it's good to look at your past and remember it. Mein Deutsche freunde, sie konnen stolz sein sein auf ihrem land! (My German friends, you can be proud of your country). ❤

I think it's more about the problem of feeling proud of one's own country, because there are so many bad things in the past, but at the same time also things you love about your own country (love-hate-relationship), than about "Vergangenheitsbewältigung". "Vergangenheitsbewältigung" is more like dealing respectfully and correctly with the past and processing it without glossing over, suppressing it or denying it.

Hey Heidi, the woman in the video is the embodiment and represents "Germania" the motherland, the embodiment of Germany. From the ancient Germanic tribes, who were the only ones to resist, and at one point even defeated the powerful Roman Empire in the Tuttember Forest, to through different eras in German history, the video "jumps" from one era to another, deliberately apparently without chronological order. But for every era and through every one there is one thing in common - Germania is always present. p.s. I'm glad you had discovered Rammstein, I love them and so do a lot of people here in Europe. Their genre is so unique, it's not classic industrial metal, their lyrics are always so multi-layered, with powerful messages, some even like poems. Unfortunately, a lot is lost in translation, and if you don't understand German, it's hard to fully grasp the whole concept of the song, but even then, the music and performances, (especially live) are so good, you can enjoy the music alone. They are known for having covered some very difficult topics, which others avoid, and there is literally no taboo or "untouchable" topic for them. Plus their live performances are literally spectacular, (Till Lindemann, lead singer is also a licensed pyrotechnician), so there is no scene he can't do with fire, explosives, etc. And he has such a deep, unique voice, which combined with his acting and body language on stage, literally brings the audience into the story, and makes their concerts unique experiences. I wholeheartedly recommend you to pleaseee🙏 watch the "Du hast" live performance from Paris, as well as "Benzin" from Madison Square Garden, from the USA, a performance from 2019, I think. Trust me, it's really, but REALLY worth a looking. As always, Much love, respect, and best wishes from Serbia, Southeast Europe.🇷🇸❤️🇺🇸🥰🍻

The song/ video takes a very deep look into german souls and how most germans feel about their country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that you would have to be German or someone that studied German history to catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania (Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties (Weimar Republic). The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression.
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania while the general populus is trapped in the glass coffin below. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence. The clergy had a huge inpact on historical event throughout German history such as wars or political influence/ decisions, and is here often shown in its darker influences.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests, with each star indicating their crime. Homosexuality, jew, and so on.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds, representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF (Red Army - left wing extremists) holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burnings.
A cardinal or constitutional judge helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born.
At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing every time, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania (dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completes how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history. It may be regarded as a young state because it has only existed in its current form since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old"

    Hi Heidi,
The song is about the band's ambivalent relationship with their country, on the one hand they love it and don't wanna live anywhere else, on the other hand they're feeling bad about the dark spots in Germany's history.
The video is in my opinion nothing but a masterpiece, full of symbols and hints about german history that even people who are very familiar with history have to watch over and over again to catch it all! Roman times, medival times, witch hunt, 30 years war, golden 20s, Third Reich, GDR, RAF Terror group....
The black lady is representing Germania, also looking sad in the dark scenes of the video, and even her outfit is symbolic: black - red- gold, the colors of the german national flag! There are also some interpretations, why they've chosen a colored actress:
    1. Germany today is multi-cultural, wether you like it or not. So, also people with foreign roots born and raised here are part of germany.
    2. As far as we know, the human race got the roots in Africa, so even the whitest german is part african.
    3. They just wanted to provocate nazis 😉
In my opinion, Rammstein put the finger on the dark sides of german history for 2 reasons: if they would have made a love song about Germany, or even just put some positive lines in it, they would have been again blaimed as right-winged or even Nazis, like their whole career. Plus: real Nazis would have used the song on demonstrations, videos etc. and they wanted to avoid that, because they are definitly NOT a Nazi-Band.

Well, the funny thing about this video is that it's called Deutschland, but for much of history, Germany wasn't even one country at all. But hey, forgive them. It's an intriguing story and beautifully portrayed.
As a Dutchman I can understand the German language well. I also have German roots and that is why I am interested in the German language (also Plattdeutsch). As a dutchy I grew up learning to dislike the Germans because of the war.
Then I grew up and Germany became the friendly juggernaut it is today. Pretty much most of our economy is reliant on our trade through and for Germany, the people are obviously wonderful, they took in more refugees as most eu countries combined at a moment where all were hesitant to do so.
Can't say that was their best choice, but it certainly was the right thing to do and the most humane.
And now in the post-russian years, where Germany's Ostpolitik was brutally used by oil mongers to aim for Germany's dependence on oil...even now their move towards sustainable solutions are remarkable. Perhaps they needed the slap in the face to regain consciousness and work on their own power, they deserve that power, they should lead Europe towards better because that's what they've been doing for the past decades.
They're too hurt by their forefathers to take the spotlight, but they're by definition the standard of hard working quality- and rules abiding people.
It's still weird, but I couldn't wish for another neighbor... Germany is beautiful.

Regarding the woman in the video:
The woman is Germania, a personification of Germany of the Romans. She cuts off Varus' head off, a Roman general, and keeps him for most of the video. The Holy Roman Empire (HRE) saw itself as the legal successor of the Western Roman Empire. After kissing her head, she becomes pregnant and gives birth to many Leonberger dogs (symbols of royal splendor), the 1000 small states and principalities on German soil in the Middle Ages. She is sometimes a Nazi, sometimes a victim of the attacks at the Olympic Games, a SED functionary, etc. The church feasts on her body, she is part of the witch burnings but also Josephine Baker and others. In the end, she is shot into space in a glass coffin like Schneewitchen (German fairy tale).

The colored lady in every scene is Germania a personification of Germany, hence she wears red and gold to go with the German flag black, red, gold. The texts describes the struggle of the band with the troubling past and the successes of Germany over the years. "Germany... One can love you, but wants to hate you". Very deep meaning. If you want to dive deeper into an analysis of the video, try the Three Arrows analysis. It's more than 30 minutes yet it still scratches only the surface. I have come to the conclusion that this video gives more than enough material for a doctorate thesis on either German history, or some sociology topic.
Edit: that Germania, the woman representing Germany, is done using a black actress was a stroke of genius. First off, it puts to rest any potential claims of Rammstein being racist, fascists, or any other kind of derogatory -ists of your choice. Second, it should have given the right wing Neonazis in Germany heart attacks out of shere perplexity.
She is always made up and dressed in specific colors. Either the black of her skin, shiny red lipstick, and some kind of gold armor or clothing. Those are the three colors of Germany's flag, black, red, gold. Or she is dressed in black, white, and red, as a symbol of the Kaiserreich, the 2nd German Empire after the Holy Roman Empire of Germanic Nations.
During the Nazi era she wears an eye patch over left eye, representative of only right wing views.
During the East German scenes she wears a Russian/Soviet Style fur cap for the influence of Moscow over the East German government.
During the Medieval Era, where the monks gorge themselves, either OF or ON her, that represents her powerlessness under the church rule of the Holy Roman Empire.
Just the symbolism packed into her clothes, makeup, and pose allows for a long in-depth conversation.
The rest of the video is as jam packed as only that single line of discussion. It is difficult to state how Rammstein and the producers succeeded at putting so much symbolism into a mere 8.5 minutes.
Edit 2: The idea of Germania came up in the Romantic era. She was seen as a representation of Germany. Unaffected herself, yet a constant observer throughout history, partially participating, yet never judging. Not a goddess per se, but immortal, yet changing with the Germans and German society she is representing. And always just existing, never initiating action herself, but watching what Germans were doing. That was the basic Romantic era idea.
Obviously the Nazis had to grab that idea and twist it into their own version.
During the 18th century nobody in Germany would have thought of representing her by a black woman; it was the time of chubby little Amor statues and all things kitschy. Women had to be well endowed, Rubens figures, with pearly white skin and rosy complexions. That's why it was such a stroke of genius by Rammstein to show that we have become so inclusive that skin color has no more meaning than just more or less melanin, nothing else. At least that's my interpretation of it.

Even as a German is is hard to get all the details. It is packed with information of all eras. Germany in the form right now is younger than the US but has at least 2,000 years of history. With all small Germanic tribes merging over centuries to empires in medieval ages. In my area civilisation is only settled around 1000 AD (Holy Roman Empire). It was primeval forest that had to be cleared for larger civilisation. But it is near Neander Valley (Neandertal, North Rhine Westfalia), spot of our ancestor the Neanderthal or Homo neanderthalensis who lived until 40,000 years ago. So, I could be a native Frank or Celt but my ancestry might share blood from Romans, Vikings or Huns as well. It's all history we don't know about. We only have much knowledge about the last two centuries but that is only a tiny bit of history we have.

German is my first language - so as a native pis let me explain as concise as possible many of the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song: In advance
    - please apologize the mistakes that I have certainly made as English is not my first language :=)
Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady's persona in the video is "Germania" and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany's history.
The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression "roter Faden"" translates to "red thread" and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story)
When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWi going into WWIl)
Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born.
Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous
German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s. Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern
Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people.
Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for
"Vergeltung" which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on "über" a german pre-syllable/prefix meaning over. "Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen" (Germany, Germany above everyONE). The line „Deutschland, Deutschland über alleN" (Germany above everyONE) is a reference to one of the verses of former national anthem of Germany which was in use from 1922 to 1945 and got excluded after WW2 for being too nationalistic. In this verse there was a line "Deutschland, Deutschland über alleS" (a subtle difference to the line in Rammstein's version translating to "Germany, Germany above everyTHING"). The actual verse with this line was already written in 1842, long before the formation of Germany as a Nation (which only happened in 1871) - therefore "Germany, Germany above everything" was relating to the importance of uniting the several German ministates, kingdoms and Duchies into one nation. After WWl this verse got taken into the national anthem of Germany as it spoke to the patriotism of the German people but later officially excluded fom the anthem since it was deemed too nationalistic. Today this verse/line is generally frowned upon and would be associated with Neo-Nationalism. Using this line in the scene with the concentration camps including the subtle change from "Germany above everyTHING" (which has already the nationalistic connotation) to "Germany above everyONE" which carries an even more nationalistic / racist meaning is a very clever double-reference to the doctrine of racial supremacy in the Third Reich.
The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called "Rote Armee Fraktion" - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm.
The puppies are from a rare breed of dogs (Leonbergers) who's population got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars.
Finally, please find below the lyrics of the song as the perfectly convey the message of the problematic relationship many
Germans have to their homeland, wanting to be proud of it but not being able to due to it's difficult history:
One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their identify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.)

Rammstein really uses a lot of symbols in this song. The real meaning only emerges with the lyrics and the video together. You really have to analyze it more closely and then you will understand the deeper meaning. In this song the Middle Ages, the time of the Romans, the GDR - these historical events are presented in different roles. Of course, the theme of the Nazi era and the persecution of the Jews is also addressed, although its presentation does not differ from the style of the other scenes. A constant in the entire video is a woman who appears as a personified Germany in the different epochs. If you know this woman is representing germany and looking to the video again you will see so much more. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless, she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold. Sometimes as a victim, sometimes as a perpetrator. In the text there are also several sections that contradict each other, e.g. "Will love and damn you". Statements like these express Germany's good and bad sides on the one hand. One of the passages like "so young and yet so old". This means that German history began early. But through certain events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the founding of the GDR through which a new era began for Germany. "one can love you and yet hate you!" It is a question of whether you can be proud of your country or not. "Your love is a curse and a blessing. I cannot give you my love." Germany is aware of the good but also dark times and many see the dark times as so extreme that it is difficult to give your country your love and pride. I must have overlooked a few things in the video, but those are the parts that stand out. I was born and raised in Germany myself and feel the same when it comes to being proud of my country. As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. he short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space.
The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The words "Germania Magna" at the beginning are a Roman name for the area of Germany, that wasn't conquered by the Roman Empire at that time.
Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were the Roman conquered areas (Roman provinces) of Germany.
The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means:
Germany as a unified state is very young. A unified German nation is only existing from 1871 onwards. Before that year of unification Germany was made of countless, little mini-states and the people identified first and foremost as Prussians, Hessians, Saxons etc, etc, etc. and only in a second line of thought they had a lose sense of being somehow Germans, too, as a kind of unifying second identity.
So the area & the landscape where the Germans are living and the Germans themselves as a people...are thousands of years old. But only recently, in 1871, there was a unified Germany as one single state.
So Germany as a unified state is very young...and at the same time it is thousands of years old.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of commanding field general Germanicus under Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation.
One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialist German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem.
Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything).
The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world).
This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere.
The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way.
When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteenth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way).
So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else".
That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song.
The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore.
This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore.
We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore.
It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
    Greetings

PS: RUclips didn't allow me to integrate this information into the bigger text (above) for unknown reasons, therefore I'm posting it here:
The troops, who smashed the Jewish shops during the Kristallnacht (not shown in the video) were SA (Sturmabteilung) in brown uniform and not the later SS (Schutzstaffel) in the black uniform. The SA did all the dirty work at the beginning of the Nazi rise to power...until the "Night of the long knives", an inner-Nazi power struggle, happened. The head of the SA (Ernst Röhm) was killed and from then on the SA was turned more and more into the SS under Himmler.
The book burnings were part of the early Nazi years, too, and were done by the SA, too. One can see the SA burning the books and Till is watching it in a brown SA uniform.
Both, Kristallnacht and book burnings were different things and happened at different times. The book burnings happened over a longer timespan at different locations at different times during the Kristallnacht was one big "event" that happened at one single day.
Kristallnacht means "Crystal Night" and was called that way, because the smashed shop windows of the Jewish shops looked like thousands of crystals on the ground. But in the Rammstein video I've only seen the book burnings.
      PPS:
The two beer drinking soldiers to the left side of the table, where Germania is lying on and where the priests are eating Sauerkraut & Sausages from her body, are not French soldiers and they aren't representing the French revolution. Those two beer drinking soldiers are Prussian soldiers and they are emphasizing the importance of Prussia for the German history.
As far as I could see: They were from the era of Friedrich der Große (The Old Fritz), who was of extraordinary importance for German history. Amongst many other achievements he was the one, who brought the potato to Prussia and Germany. That saved many Germans from hunger and the potato became one of the most beloved foods in Germany on that way.
PPPS: The name Rammstein comes from the German town Ramstein (with one "m"). There is an US-airbase and there happened a big, tragic airshow disaster, when two jets collided and fell into the audience.
Therefore all the flames and the burning coat during the song Rammstein and all the fire in their shows in general. But that rather tasteless name and the negative press echo were too much even for Rammstein. So they changed their name later in Rammstein, what indeed means "battering stone".
They delivered a half assed explanation for it decades ago. I've forgotten, what they said. A fact is, that they called themselves after that town and that airshow disaster. Probably for provocation purposes.
Their old song "Rammstein" even tells in other words the story of that disaster and it tells about a fine day with a warm shining sun...and burning people.
Neue Deutsche Härte was always a pretty unsatisfying new name for the music they made mainly: Industrial or Industrial Metal/Rock.

The video is a journey through German history. The lady in the main role is Germania (Germany) herself. It starts off with the Roman legions XVII, XVIII and XIX, which were completely destroyed in a forest ambush in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. Then, the video moves on through other moments of German history, and lady Germania wears symbols of that era - in Weimar Germany, which was a quite liberal period but marked by hyperinflation, she wears cabaret clothes and the others around her are engaged in a boxing match, then there's communist East German symbolism at some point including the bust of Lenin, the astronaut is probably the one sent by East Germany in a USSR led mission in space (first German in space). The Holocaust imagery is self-explanatory, and if you'll look closer at the emblems on the prisoners chests, you'll see they are the people most commonly convicted to death in the Holocaust: Jewish people, homosexuals and left wing political prisoners. The scene where the medieval monks feast on Germania's body, I can't exactly grasp the symbolism there, most likely it has to do with how the church was gobbling wealth at the expense of the common people and the country herself in the medieval times. I am guessing their glutinous way is a symbol of their immense greed, Germania lies almost dead on the country and they feast on her (Germany was not a single country at the time, it was broken in hundreds of autonomous or independent pieces), and the people underneath in the blood at the suppressed commonfolk. Then again, the rats scene suggests the Black Death too... so who knows. The flaming airstrip scene is likely a reference to the disaster of the Hindenburg airship, which caught fire and burned down near New York City. The piano at the end is a version of Sonne, another great videoclip of Rammstein.
Essentially, every scene is a bit of German history, viewed through a critical lens. Oh, and Germania with the dogs might be a symbol of how hard it is for her to hold off the dogs of war and how hungry they are to be unleashed, or it could simply be an imagistic hint towards the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Or both. And the finale is perhaps a question of what is to come, as Germania ventures into the great beyond.

The woman in the video is intended to represent "Germania" and how she was seen or portrayed herself throughout the ages. For example, decorated with pomp at one time and blind in one eye (eye patch) during the Nazi rule in the Third Reich. Explaining Germania itself is a bit difficult, but most likely it is a symbol of the pride and will of the German people. The dog breed is called “Leonberger” (because you looked so surprised). This also has several meanings, one of which is that this German dog breed almost died out during the world wars and is only thriving again today thanks to the intensive efforts of German dog breeders.

Hi from Germany, first of all a great reaction to Rammstein !!
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The battle of the Teutoburg forrest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" shown to their chests, like it was in reality, too.
PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before.
PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.

Then saw this one, and in keeping with your leaning towards educational and informative videos (as you stated at the beginning of the Nightwish video), you might want to react to some of Sabaton's songs from their 'The Great War' and 'The Art of War' albums.
They pick parts of history and make metal songs about them :D

It is an english analysis of the song and the video footage with all the backstory behind it. That is a must watch to understand the complexity behind this masterpiece of Rammstein.
Maybe you could even do a reaction on the Analysis?

    Some of the symbolisms:
-The woman is Germania, the personification of Germany (like Uncle Sam for the US or Britannia for Great Britain). In the beginning is the battle of the Teutoburg Forest:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germania_(personification)
-The feasting priests is a symbol of the 30 year war, the clergy is living it up and feasting on the country, and the ordinary people are suffering below the table.
-The cross-dressed band is symbolising the communist and anarchist terrorist groups of the 1970s in West-Germany, (Red Army Faction and 2nd june movement) taking Germania hostage (with an explosive belt).
-Till wearing that hat is a symbol to Erich Honecker, the long year chairman of the East German communist party and head of state of East Germany.
The dogs are "Leonberger", that dog race that almost extinct after World War 1, only 5 survived. And after WW2 they were almost extinct in Germany. The ones you find here today can all be traced back to the 8 examples that survived WW2.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonberger

Thank you for taking your time with it and putting some thought in it. I don't know why, but when people don't do that, i somehow feel offended. It is not important if you interpret it "the right way", Rammstein leave room for individual interpretation. What i think is interesting is not so much the historic references, but the interaction between Germania and the band and how they enact those references. Like Germania cutting Tills head off and keeping it like a trophy. Germania raising the band from the dead, having them fight for her and die again for her. The band on their knees infront a Germania with a gloriole. And later holding the dogs that Germania gave birth to, whatever that's supposed to mean. With Rammstein you never know if anything has a deeper meaning or none at all.
