I knew Jess when we both were in Spokane. I took my great uncle's 1860s saddle to Jess's shop at Playfair and he rebuilt it with new leather. He did a wonderful job on it and made it like brand new. It's a comfortable ride with the high cantleback and I still have it. The tree is fairly narrow so doesn't fit flat backed quarter horses. I visited regularly with Jess during the weeks that he worked on that old saddle and was spell bound watching him work leather.
Jesse is an incredible leather worker and saddle maker. He was our neighbor when I was growing up, I went to school with his sons. They're all just as down to earth as he is. It's been over 20 years since I've seen him, but I believe his son Zane is also making saddles. Neat guy, and I miss talking to him. Seeing his work as I was growing up is what peaked my interest in leather work. Thanks for sharing this Jim.
