At 0:33 Elvis is "caught" on video SMOKING--GASP! He once bought back a photo a fan took of him smoking a cigar just so it wouldn't get out...our hero told the press he didn't drink or smoke. He rarely did drink but he liked cigars. He's smoking an actual cigarette in this clip.

Footage from 4-20-1957 at Sam Phillips' home ... originally in 1981's "This Is Elvis." Chuck Staley recalls: "Elvis was late arriving and was very apologetic about being late. As we stood by the pool table he quietly told me that he had a boil on his waist and his belt rubbed on it and it hurt like hell, so he had stopped by the doctor's to get some pain pills. He said the Cigarillo helped take the pain off his mind. When the others in the room saw the cigarillo, they all wanted to puff on it."

@@kazfleszar5899 Yes, Cigarillos were quite popular then. If you meant to imply a joint was puffed you're wrong. I asked Staley about this suggestion and he shot it down immediately. It was April 1957, not April 1967.

Thank You for sharing!! It was a normal thing back then to let someone take a drag off a cigarrete. Not everyone is a smoker or smoked pot, back then or now!! Elvis smoked cigars and cigarellos but it was considered an evil (as it is, but in the health sense), anyway, Elvis had a hard time already being the 'sex crazed, gyrating rock n roller' where he was even declared by judges as inappropriate and could not move onstage, only his pinky finger,....true story, so if it got out that he smoked, it would just add to the 'hypocritical adult naysayers' who did not like him. Elvis had a hard enough time because of the way he looked, long hair and all, his appearance with his flashy clothes added with his gyrations and the way he sang, Girls screaming and scratching for him, with his fancy cars and all. Elvis smoked to relieve his stress as most smokers do, and as many many entertainers, actors singers,..etc....do....This is a PRIVATE side of Elvis. Not pot, just a cigarette/ cigarello, that he smoked. People who were there state it was not pot. Please don't judge from a second of a clip stating he was smoking pot. I'm sorry, but let's not sugarcoat it....That is most likely a marijuana cigarette. We all know as GREAT as he was, Elvis was no saint. In his life enough people turned their heads the other way while Elvis did his drugs. I'm not putting Elvis down for the things he did because he was human just like the rest of us. This is very early footage and is most likely the very beginning of Elvis' drug use. At that time it wasn't considered a big deal to smoke a little marijuana ( it still isn't ) , but we know a little more now about it. Now we know that marijuana CAN BE a gateway drug that can lead to other more potent drugs. At this point, it doesn't really matter that Elvis was smoking marijuana , but let's not deny the truth of what we're seeing in this film.

(watch Elvis on Milton Berle show singing Hound Dog is a glimpse) Elvis even dated strippers. My guess is that you haven’t seen raw footage of Elvis onstage, seen photos or read about his acts throughout his career, especially in the beginning. Elvis was even court ordered by a Florida judge, not to move, not to gyrate onstage, the police filmed it for evidence if he did. The judge even attended the show! Elvis stood onstage and only moved his pinky finger which really excited the crowd anyhow, perhaps even more than his usual performance. Elvis was considered a bad influence to young people & to the national security of the U.S.! Have you no idea the hateful things said against him? The white conservatives and religious groups called him the devil & even worse than that, I cannot even write what they said against him because it will be removed.
Elvis was a good, loving, generous, respectful, humble man who loved music and he didn’t do anything wrong, he felt the music inside him & while he sang he moved, he gyrated, it’s the straight laced white conservatives and religious groups that could not handle it! They were wrong, not Elvis, but as we know, they accused, hated on and blamed Elvis for the liberation of young people especially young women who fell in love with Elvis & his music. Guys were also influenced by Elvis & many rock bands started... they state Elvis influenced them. Heartbreak Hotel was Elvis’ RCA breakout song. The suits at RCA didn’t understand the song or why Elvis chose it. (the song was written esp for Elvis) the suits eventually supported Elvis’ pick because after all they paid a huge amount of money for him. That song hit many young people! It was different. Didn’t understand why or how different but it was something they really liked! Keith Richards said he was influenced by it, and many other future rock n rollers were too! During Elvis’ exciting career, he had everything going for him (except for many parents, religious groups etc) and he was then drafted! Why do you think Elvis was really drafted? He was the only child, the only son to carry on the the family name, the sole provider for his family, but he was drafted. And in usual government style, they used his fame to also promote the military while they made him a ‘respectful’ man. SMDH ~ Elvis lost 2 years of his successful career because of folks who were scared of him. Can you imagine what Elvis could have achieved in music, in his career etc during that time. Elvis was a respectful and honorable man who accepted his draft but inside he hated that he was literally stopped. Elvis onstage in 1970 said, ‘I was drafted and I was shafted!’ - Why? Cause it still bothered him. His mother died because of it. While his Mama was gravely ill, the military would not allow Elvis an emergency leave to see her. After many denied requests, Elvis finally threatened to go AWOL and then he was finally allowed an emergency leave. Elvis flew with Lamar from Texas to Memphis, to see her, spent the day with her at her bed side when his Daddy told him to go home and get some rest. Gladys Love Presley died with Vernon at her side on August 14, 1958 age 46.
This video footage and the negative comments of uninformed folks made against him are really silly and childish. People took drags off of cigarettes all the time back then but here we are, the same stupid childish stuff said against Elvis. Many stars would say they didn’t smoke cigarettes in their private life (but they did), just smoked cigarettes as a prop in the movie, which actually was a promotion for the tobacco industry that financially backed the film.
No wonder why Elvis died, besides many of his inner group that were not good for him, his ‘so-called fans’ hate on him still today! It’s ridiculous. And for the haters on Parker, who did help Elvis’ career but Parker also became a double edged sword, however he never publicly attacked Elvis or wrote any sensationalized tabloid book! Elvis’ own so called loyal friends who literally burned Elvis’ books because he read about spirituality & other religions, wrote tabloid books that really assassinated his character! Those tabloid books & magazines were bought up by so called Elvis fans! And that awful cloud of misinformation still hangs over a good loving respectful generous and humble man called Elvis Presley, who was beautiful inside and out, and blessed by God with a beautiful voice!

Awww can't help it, but I think it's just too cute how he tried to hide a cigar. Don't be silly it was his personal thing if he smoked or not, or what did he smoke. He was a great artist, no matter what did he smoke.
I think throughout his life he had the odd cigar and odd drink. But by no means was he a habitual user. In this clip he was probably trying to look cool, looks so cute trying to hide the cigar. He just looks stunning.

Seven years since posting this and I still remember this night in Memphis. No one has ever mentioned it to me, but Elvis is being crowned as The King for the first time ever! The man in the mask was my friend Harry and he drove with me to Hollywood when I moved here. He is long since gone. At age 92, I think I have only one or two old friends still around. just saw this clip in the movie This is Elvis (1981) but it's in HD quality most of the clips that have been restored B&W as if you're watching digitally re-mastered edition of The Three stooges..I noticed in the clips after this when he had his friends over at his house he casually smoked a few times even one where shows the camera man showing everyone as it turns Elvis quickly took the lit cigarette out of his mouth & puffed out as if it he didn't want anyone to see him smoking on camera..also I seen a couple clips they showered where they aired a live telephone interview w someone & he was asked if he had ever smoked Marijuana he casually laughed but didn't answer.. I also seen this clip shows where he was tried in court accused of hitting a man that tried to punch him at a has station & somehow the judge threw the case out on some agreement that wasn't mentioned & he walked free..so in some cases he was a talented musician but had a few bad raps about him not that incident since no charges were filed against him..but still was a legendary icon sadly taken early in his time from drug addiction

Lets at least clear one thing up. People did not "roll blunts" at this time! The contemporary meaning is pot rolled into a thick cheap cigar. Now, if you fast forward a decade, it could be a possible tho unlikely pot delivery method. But NOT when this was filmed. A joint? It was denied by Chuck Staley. All I can say.

@mommastcb I do not think it would be unusual, even back then, for a cool young hipster like Elvis to smoke pot "socially" on ocassions (it's not like he was a pothead). Also, he is holding it and taking a hit off it the way you would smoke pot.......and who passes a tobacco cigarette around....not too common to do that. The cigarette looks thinner than a normal cig too. I mean, if Elvis tried pot for a short peroid in his life to me that would in no way diminish his character

My point is that all of you making a big deal about Elvis smoking are sinners. Everybody is. It's just that your sins aren't known to the world. I also read in a book that one of his early girlfriends (I think it was June) said she caught him watching porn at Dewey's house with Nick Adams. It didn't take him long to fall away from his religion and God. He let Hollywood and all the fame go straight to his head. He was easily led astray.
