I thought I was the only one fascinated by this stuff! These are called the "pot belly" closers and are getting even more rare. They work like a charm and are MUCH better than some of the other ones out on the market.
They still make potbellies? I'm shocked, actually very happy! The cast-iron on the closers is similar to what happened to elevators: everything was brass, metal and made with quality. Now, plastic, cheap metal and JUNK! My school still has a few potbellies left, but most are gone. We now have the modern "rectangular bodied" closers, which are nice but have no true character.
jimster, the requester was me, yes indeed this closer works REALLYwell for it's age, just goes to show the quality that these older cast iron traditional style closers have, along with the character they leave in an old building, favoritingenuity this and TY for upload, -jess the door closer doctor
The actual "lightness" of the door actually has to do with the hinges. Spaced out right, and durable, they can take a massive door, and make it feel light as cardboard (which my front door feels like, only because it actually is cardboard. :D).
suzzex, they sure dont make them like they used to, this really also shows the beauty of hardware, only time i see cast iron used on closers, is LCN's closers. only brand left that does potbelly closers is norton and yale. Yale 1900 and Norton 78, the look is still there but they are made of aluminum alloy, if taken care of the right way, this closer will stay furntioning for 50+ years. -Jess the door closer doctor
Hi. I purchased 1 that has a 90 degree shelf type bracket which is removable if I need to... I would like to put it on the inside of an out-swing door. Also it appears to be for the wrong swing door but I was told they are reversible. Any ideas? TYIA
cool, this means yours is OLDER then mine, mine says "AHC clarksdale miss. 1952 model B-2" AHC= American hardware corp, which also was parent company to corbin as was with russwin, early corbins were just "P. F. Corbin" now since the since 80's, Corbin and russwin are merged and are owned by ASSA ABLOY. -Jess the door closer doctor
jimster, i posted some comments on flickr of this closer and favorited all the photos, i would say this one is from the 30's -Jess the door closer doctor
jimster, the year is not on front label, its on top by arm & gear, with a russwin this old you may find 4 patent dates(you have an early model russwin) as well as different style knarls on large adjustment knob. the russwin label in small print should read "made in USA", i have one of these closers, mine's from 1952, in video i seen you were seeing if label was a sticker, the bigger sizes of russwin did, (C and D) B's use rivits. expert in fixing closers, -jess the door closer doctor
Wow. Thanks for the video. I have one of those on my massive front door and now watching your video i can see it needs some adjusting. 😅

Corbin Russwin has heavy duty cast iron closers made in Monroe, NC.
How do you adjust it. My door is not completely closing.

How do you adjust the speed?
Ruben Reyes knob on left side,
I believe this model has two thumb knobs. One for the sweep and one for the latch. Rebuilt a thousand over the years. Love working on them.
@@kharris3902 these are one of my favorites of the potbelly closers!!
Not really. You could just fold it over. :D
