  • In this follow up on my last video on reworking the surface finish of metal objects, like watches and rings, I want to show the final result on the Guanqing watch. I also provide some other examples of results I got with a titanium ring, a Seiko 5 (snxs79k) and an Addiesdive aviator (my-h2). With the Seiko I had to correct and polish out a small scratch I accidentally produced in a polished surface I tried to avoid and yes, that happened in one of the last passes. With the Flieger I chose to highlight the sharp edges on the watch by polishing those out in a very thin line.
The polishing agent I use is a rather plain one that is meant for silver wear, that is also suitable for steel. please note that polishes meant for one metal alloy are not always suitable and can be in fact corrosive or edging to others. If you go off label use, please make sure that the polishing agent you intent on using doesn't have ingredients that are detrimental to the metal you are polishing.

Nice video. I also like to restore watches. For polishing the narrow surfaces, the pegwood and some polishing paste (I use Autosol, which also works wonders on acrylic crystals) truly works wonders. For the brushed surfaces, I like "Scotchbrite-type" pads, but of course it depends on how rouch one wants the finish. Deep scatches I remove first with grit 600-800 and end with 1200. It is a very satisfying feeling to bring a steel watch back to its former glory. BTW the Guanqin has a tungsten bezel, which is close to scratch proof. In my opinion, this feature makes this watch a gem for the price. See you around.

Thanks for the suggestions! The Guanqin really is an interesting watch, the tungsten bezel is surely a nice feature, especially when you also wear a tungsten carbide ring on your opposite hand. The see-through Caseback seems to be acrylic and the heavy colourful AR(?) Coating on the back is on the outside, so not much in the way of scratch resistance there. But like an Armadillo it is protected where it matters. The one in the vid had a bit of a problem though: it had a very stiff crown operation. When I took the movement out it turned out that there was an excess of glue residue on the stem. Having that scratched away it operates much smoother.
