I bought this camera in 1982. I used it a lot in the 80’s. Many years later I picked it back up and bought one for my teenager and taught her how to use it. This video far exceeds what I thought her. Great info.
Thanks you must know a lot about the quirks of this camera. If you have any tips to share to all of us, let me know. I'll try to make an update video with all of your tips!
This is an amazing tutorial. Thanks. Great info. Perfect pacing and visually engaging. Thanks! I recently acquired an AE-1 and using this weekend for the first time. Looking forward to capturing some memories.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial. The AE-1 is a fantastic camera, and I'm sure you'll have a great time using it this weekend. Happy shooting, and I hope you capture some amazing memories! If you have any questions along the way, feel free to reach out. Enjoy! 📷✨
Hi-De-Ho!! This video is genuinly one of the finest pieces of editing I've seen all year (of 2024!!) I've got this camera, as I've been going through old old cameras ranging from the 30s-80s that my great grandparents and such have kept through the years, which I now have. I've been taking pictures on this thing, it's fun! I just hope I can develope the films somehow.
Two questions. 1: Can film that expired in 2012 still be used at all? I've set the ASA to be less sensetive so that it lets more light into the film, since I'd assume that it's not as sensetive as it used to be. 2: How do you actually develop the film? I don't really know where to look for people who do it. I'd prefer going to someone individually who does it who is trusted by a lot of people rather than a huge company. Thank you for your time!!
@@WeegeeFan1Studios Thank you for the kind words-I'm thrilled you enjoyed the editing! It’s amazing that you have such a treasure trove of vintage cameras with family history. To your questions: Expired Film: Yes, film expired in 2012 can still be used! Adjusting the ASA/ISO is a smart move. A common rule of thumb is to overexpose by 1 stop for every decade the film is expired, so setting your ASA lower is perfect. Just keep in mind that results can vary, with possible color shifts, increased grain, or loss of contrast-it’s part of the charm of expired film! Developing Film: For individual developers, you can look for local film communities or groups (try Reddit’s r/AnalogCommunity or Facebook groups for film enthusiasts). Websites like Find My Film Lab Map (findmyfilmlab.com) also list labs and independent developers worldwide. Enjoy experimenting with your film-it's such a rewarding journey! 😊📸
Thank you so much! I'm excited for you and your AE-1 Program-it's a fantastic camera! I'm sure your photos will turn out great, especially with the tips in mind. Have fun shooting, and feel free to share how your first roll comes out. If you need any more advice along the way, don’t hesitate to ask! 📸✨
You're very welcome! I'm glad you found the video helpful. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to ask. Happy shooting! 😊📸
One of many fabulously wonderful cameras - at one point I had five - getting older now I have given two away. I'd often run three, 1 B&W, 1 Colour and 1 with transparency - and ocassionally a fourth with Delta 3200.
@@chriszueger Gave an AE1 to my nephew. I adore the AE1+P but never use its priority modes. I also have pentax K1000 / ME SE / ME Super and MX with the MX being my perferred Pentax. Great glass on both Canon and Pentax
Hi, amazing video, beautifully explained too 🙌🏼 I’ve had this camera for a year and just recently started getting into film. I just did not understand the aperture part, i’m going to be making it a priority to learn it though 👍🏼
hi ! im just starting to use this camera and i realised that ive been taking some pictures without setting the shutter speed so itt was at the "program" state. What does this mean for the pics that have been taken ? are they going to be completly dark?
Hi! No worries at all-using the Canon AE-1 Program in "Program" mode just means the camera automatically selected the shutter speed and aperture for you, based on the available light. Your photos shouldn't be completely dark unless there wasn’t enough light in the scene, and the camera struggled to expose correctly. If you were shooting in reasonably lit conditions, your shots should turn out fine! It’s a great mode for starting out, as it lets you focus on composition without worrying about manual settings. Can’t wait to hear how your photos turn out! 😊📸
Awesome video, thank you! Do you by any chance have a recommendation for resources on the Exposure Lock button? I know you mentioned some of the uses as "pro tips", but I am having trouble finding an in-depth explanation of its uses. Also, is there an indicator light to show that the Exposure Lock has been activated?
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately, the Canon AE-1 Program doesn’t have an indicator light to show that the Exposure Lock is activated. I don't have a youtube link on the top of my mind, but I'm sure youtube has something on this. But I'll add it to my list of videos to make. I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask. Happy shooting! 📸
My first camera and still love it. I still miss aperture rings on the lens; half press and spin until the light meter is zeroed - never have to move the hand from focusing. Also miss the focus prism split ring. I know everyone has autofocus now, but... would it hurt to put it back?
I totally get where you're coming from! There's something so satisfying about using aperture rings and the split-focus prism. It made shooting feel more hands-on and precise. Autofocus is convenient, but those classic features added a tactile connection to the process. It would be amazing to see modern cameras bring back some of those elements!
Then you tell your camera to switch to "Av" (Aperture Priority) mode. This way, you can select the aperture on the lens, and the camera will automatically choose the appropriate shutter speed.
Is an external flash the only option on this camera or does it have an internal flash too? Asking for night time photography. Thanks so much for the helpful video!
pro tip: the tab on the hot shoe cover (if you have one) is made to open the battery door
Thanks, great advice! Unfortunately mine didn't come with one. I pin your comment for others to see.

Hello! I have a question. What if I put the dial PROGRAM choosing an aperture in the lens?
Then you tell your camera to switch to "Av" (Aperture Priority) mode. This way, you can select the aperture on the lens, and the camera will automatically choose the appropriate shutter speed.
But does this camera work only in manual and AE mode? In the Instructions manual, there is not explained the AV mode…
Also, can you use an Ae-1 lens on an Ae-1 program?
Yes, you can use lenses from the Canon AE-1 on the AE-1 Program camera. They both use the Canon FD lens mount, so they are compatible with each other.
Is an external flash the only option on this camera or does it have an internal flash too? Asking for night time photography. Thanks so much for the helpful video!
Thank you for watching! This camera only features an external flash option, so for nighttime photography, an external flash would be the way to go.
great video, but you covered so much it would be amazing to have timestamps!!!!
thanks for your time! Great idea, I'll update it asap.
Your camera has the “cough” 😂. That’s fairly easy to fix if you’re not afraid to tinker with it
Haha, the infamous "cough"! 😂 Thanks for the tip! I might just have to roll up my sleeves and give it a go. Appreciate the encouragement!
what is it?
Need battery
The Canon AE-1 Program battery is a 4LR44 or 4SR44 6V battery.
