From a book The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller: www.goodreads.... The Song of Achilles retells the events of Homer’s Iliad told from the perspective of Patroclus. The book reimagines the relationship between ancient Greek Trojan war heroes Achilles and Patroclus. The novel follows Patroclus' relationship with Achilles, from their initial meeting to their exploits during the Trojan War, with a particular focus on their romantic relationship.

In the end, you must admit, he probably was the happiest hero of them all. He was united with his lover, his soulmate, his reason for happiness, life and death. They embraced each other in the life after their life on earth.
Yes, they suffered so much, unbearable pain, physically and emotionally, but they are together in the end. Patroculus swore and almost he was not able to keep his promise to Achilles, but his love and his memories brought them together at last.
Do not get me wrong; everytime I hear a quote, see a drawing of them or remember a scene in my head that came from reading this book and spending hours in its world and in grief over the pain, wounds and tears of Achilles and Patroculus, I cry. But at least a little it is also out of relieve and happiness, that their fight on earth, their promises, their love and dreams have come to an end, which shows them hand in hand, together as they have once sworn each other.
Achilles was, at least in this adaptation of their story, the happiest of heros.

I cried when Patroclus told Thetis every thing in every way he wants Achilles to be remembered by everybody only for Thetis to carve his name on the tombstone because Patroclus holds every detail and memory of Achilles and their love ;( And when she said "Go, he's waiting for you" omfg the way this book made me feel like I was patroclus is amazing and heartbreaking.

in every good and brilliant way that the killer feared by the gods would be remembered, it would be in the goodness of patroclus that we see achilles' humanity. all of him that defies immortality: borrowed armor, a pierced heel, and a tombstone. all of it is never just achilles, but patroclus. one name was never meant to be said (or written in stone) without the other.

I know I am a bit late but they are finally reunited, finally happy. That end quote where they hold hands and reunite in the underworld is enough to give me closure. Plus, to me if they were still alive, they would have joined other wars and they could never be allowed to spend time together and live a normal life. So for me, they are happier in the underwold.
“I will never leave him. It will be this, always, for as long as he will let me.”
In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.

Thinking about this section in the book pains me. It pains me to think about the joy that Patroclus and Achilles shared, that instantly came crashing down with a plethora of flaws. It pains me to realize that the two lovers could never show great affection due to multiple people. It pains me to realize that they both died in grief or fear for the other. The book and the Iliad pain me in multiple ways I cannot even describe and this book represents it so well that it makes you feel the pain of the lovers.

"Name one hero who was happy"
My first thought: Santa Claus 🎅
i mean, if you think about it, heroes tend to be unhappy because sadness and anger are the things that make people stand up and try to make a change. sadness and anger that come from compassion and empathy for someone or something that it's unfair and hurtful are the main things that drive people to fight against injustice
That may be true but i also noticed that heros also lose their will to live and they just care fir one thing revenge.
@@leni3862 well, there's a thin line between revenge and justice, and it's blurry for many
this is definitely one of the MOST novels of all time, I liked the part where achilles said 'its singin time' and achilles'd all over the trojans.

this is my favorite quote from the book. it fills me with hope, joy, and bittersweetness.
I can think of one, Perseus, the man was pretty much the Greek mythology version of a Mary Sue character, he succeeds at everything, marries a beautiful princess, forges a mighty empire, dies happily, and is the founder of a line of heroes with Heracles being one of them.
This doesn’t make me heal but at the same time thank you, it’s a masterpiece ❤
