I agree. You need a clean (no effects) sound to hear the subtle differences between the 3. And it would've been better if he had used a pick for a crisper sound, instead of the muffled sound of his fingers.

I have owned Epiphone, Ibanez and Gretsch guitars ... yet not these particular models - I have to say, all of them have been superb, with their own little quirks and idiosyncrasies and it is always a personal choice, depending upon requirements, when deciding which make and model is right for a particular sound and feel .... I have always found it difficult when " getting rid " of a guitar ( if I were a rich man ... I would have them all lol ) - currently, my favourite ( out of the three manufacturers ) is the Gretsch ( I have the Streamliner G2622T and I love it - such a versatile instrument with an awesome feel - I also love the Ibanez Artcore AF75 and have never understood why they are so cheap - they are awesome guitars and have an amazing warmth of guitars 10 times the price ..... my favourite arch top though, has to be my Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin - I bought it second hand with its original Godin P90 pick up included, though it was / and is still fitted with a Gibson P90 and it is astounding .... again, I reiterate, guitars are very personal instruments and everyone will have their own opinions ... I really enjoyed this review as this point was made very clear ... thanks x
I tried the Ibanez only two days ago ( 12th Jan 18) . The sweet sound is still ringing in my ears and thanks to your video i now feel confident that it'll be money well spent as i'll be going back to the store and wacking on a layby. BTW: $800 but i can get him down to 750 and as i'm in Australia it sounds like it is priced correctly. Cheers and thanks again
I think that Epiphone is the most underrated brand name on the market. I absolutely love my Dot! It was my first "real" guitar, and (although I've bought and sold a LOT of axes in my time!), I'd never part with it!While it's very versitile and can play just about any genre, I can't get away from the wonderfully mellow, bluesy tone that I get when playing on the neck pickup with just a little distortion and reverb. When I haven't played for a while, that's always where I start. I highly recommend this guitar! The other two look really cool, and are probably a lot of fun to play, too! Thanks for posting the video. It inspired me to pick up my Dot and play some!
I have the Epiphone ES-335 pro with coil splitting humbuckers (same price as the Dot) and it is a fantastic guitar. Came ready to play and set up, right out of the box. I watch these comparison vids and they never pick the Epi, but they are still the best selling semi hollow in the under $500 market. A "cool" looking bridge has never swayed me. I compared all of these and the D'Angelico when shopping and I bought based on sound, feel and reading about 200 reviews.
I bought a Oscar Schmidt,Delta King,Washburn,OE-30 used for 100.00 I set it up and did what we all do to make it for me and I have to say it plays and sounds great.
I played about 6 Epi's (339 too) at GC & all of them needed work. Neck Adjustment, fret work, something. One just had a flat out bad neck. The Ibanez was pretty decent off the shelf. I settled on the Streamliner & have since bought 2 more. I love them. They hold up well to much more expensive ones.
I have to admit I have heard others say this as well. Just not my experience except for my Swingster. It was totally set up by the old Apple Music in Portland. The did a neck adjust & some fret work before they would put it on the floor. The electronics lasted a whole year before I had to have it worked on. Still plays great.
So glad I found this video.. I'm lost trying to surprise my son and get the semi hollow body hes been wanting but I'm on a budget that wont budge. Thank you for info. 🎶🎼🎵 Cindy from Athens, Ga. 🍑
My ears aren't good enough at distinguishing tone differences and preferences, and i think maybe amp settings can influence the tone more than the differences in the guitars. I bought a Gretsch Streamliner G2622 a couple of months ago and I like it, but at the time there were no Epiphone semi-hollow body guitars in the guitar stores near me, so I had nothing to compare it to. A couple of days ago I went to the guitar store to get some strings, and I tried out an Epiphone, and I wished I had waited and gotten it instead of the Gretsch, but not because of tonal differences. I have really big hands and fingers, and the neck of the Epiphone seems to work with my hands better than the Gretsch. That kind of difference is a bigger thing to me than the tonal differences.
As I watch this I keep thinking... George benson -vs- Chuck berry -vs- Brian setzer Washburn, Cort and Samick also have some good value semis.... IMHO... Oh GREAT playing too btw!!
I feel that the Epiphone 335 pro is the best semi - hollow body under $500 because of the craftsmanship, sound, and of course the price. It's the upgraded version to the Dot and let me tell you there's a difference when playing the 335 pro. I recently got mine in Iced Tea and boy it's a beauty plus the sound is so sweet. Sounds crazy but I think the 335 pro could compete with a Gibson 335 when it comes to tone.
Paul F. Funny I have the 335 pro with the ice tea finish and it sounds like I wrote your review dido couldn't agree more. Epiphone is coming back. Couldn't find a Gibson 335 I liked more. Wilshires are cool too! I've. Tried a lot of 335s I'll take the Feel of Epiphone. Good comment sir
Damn! I really want the Ice Tea Burst! I was on the fence about the pro but I think you guys sold me. I had a dot deluxe but didnt appreciate it like I should have due to me having a different playing style at the time. I never set it up properly an sold it.. BIG REGRET
Agree 100%! I have owned a dot for about 10 years, and the second I picked up the 335 pro in the store I felt the difference. Never been happier playing a guitar, and I bought it on the spot!
This the EXACT comparison I've been looking for - so thank you warmly! Could you inform what amp and possible pedals you were using? Dug the sound. Playing blues with gain - they do sound fairly similar - so I agree with the call to do a cleaner comparison. Still I thought: Ibanez had the warmest tone, Epiphone a bit more clarity, Gretsch stood out the least. A bit flatter and thinner than the others. Thanks
Get yourself a relatively inexpensive semi-hollow guitar with a good body and neck, pull the pickups and the wiring harness and replace them with top-of-the-line aftermarket PU's (I used Seth Lovers) and a Gibson ES-335 harness. Swap out the tuners for Grovers and you'll have yourself a way better guitar than any of these for maybe $750, if not less..
TheSoundOutside tbh that's the same with solid body guitars as well, get a relatively cheep guitar with feel that suites you, then get top of the line pups and your set
TheSoundOutside i think you need to read the title of the video. Spending $750 probably would sound better than the best under $500 though.....Imagine that.
Hey man, I’d appreciate your advice on this. I’m in the market for a semi-hollow under 500. I’m a big Foo Fighters/Dave Grohl Fan. But obviously I can’t afford a Trini Lopez or Dave Grohl signature ES 335! I’m wondering which of these three will get me closest to that tone? By listening, I’d have to say it’s the Epiphone. But I’m still curious for your opinion. Thanks!
I bought a Dot and had a buzz. I replaced the Tune O Magic bridge with a new one from Stew Mac and got rid of it. Still dislike that style because of the lack of being able to fine tune height on each string. Not a bad value though.
Switching between instruments quickly as was done in the video, I would have picked distinctly different colors, rather than all red based, where the viewer would have instantly known which one was being played at any given time.
Wow. Guess I was lucky. About 15 years ago, I bought a semi Hollowbody for $500. I got a D'Armond Guild Starfire Custom. Too bad they don't make them anymore. That guitar is better than the new Guild Guilds that are being made nowdays! When I bought the guitar, I originally went to the store with buying an Epiphone in mind. I wanted something with F holes and Epiphone fit that price range. That or something used that was cool and affordable. I tried the DOT 335. before the Starfire. And I'm sorry, but it was a horrible guitar to me. The neck had the feel and response of a half whittled baseball bat. I didn't like the sound from the pick ups either. Too bassy and muddy. Great if all you play is Black Sabbath rhythms over and over But anything past the fifth fret on the D string and.....YUCK! . And playing clean everything had this awful plinky sound. But the thing I've learned about Semi Hollow bodies and hollow bodies is these guitars differ from guitar to guitar. And from what I understand, Epiphone finally got their head out of their ass and decided to try and make decent instruments again for a change. And reading the comments here, people that own them seem to like them. I don't know a thing about the other two guitars. I do know that Ibanez specializes in guitars in this price range and Gretsch is sorta new in this market. They could be going to impress and put out phenomenal guitars or just trying to stay in the black and crank out whatever. But do note the binding on the inside of the F holes on the Ibanez and the cool Bridge on the Gretsch versus the sticker on the Epiphone. Sound? That's just too hard to tell between them with the example given. This video didn't really show the range potential of any of the guitars, so it's really hard to make a very good opinion beyond appearances.. Also, if you can increase your budget and shop in the $500 - $800 range, you will have a lot more options. But something tells me this video is really about is what's in Alamo's inventory at that price range. And that's fair enough. Why review a guitar you don't sell?
Firefly's have sounded nice in YT reviews I have watched, but they don't have near the quality pots or electronics. Epiphone semi hollow also now have coil splitting humbuckers and needed zero set up. Of course the Epi has resale value too.
@@charlie-obrien I didn't even play my green Firefly. Strings off, made the neck straight, sanded the frets even, crowned them, new strings, .010 clearance at the 7th fret, adjusted intonation at the 5th fret, not 12th.. 90 minutes total....plays like my Tele. Electronics, it's 130.00, you get what you pay for, pickups are not that bad for home use. 70.00 for new tuners maybe.. For learning on, or jamming at home, nothing better on the market.
They all sound good and that is because of your playing. Good job Nick. But I would have to playthem myself. The neck, weight and playability can not be gleened by watching you play. So I would have to play them myself. I have played these guitars and I like the Ibanez and the dot. I do not care for the Gretsch for the type of music you were playing.
Realist 2.0 I. Ant grind a reliable source that says HBs are better or even as good as Epiphone. It’s either commenters (half of which say they’re terrible) or people that are obviously paid or given free HBs that wouldn’t dare say anything negative.
Sadly another over distorted guitar demo making it impossible for someone to judge clean tones which is actually the essential way to judge guitar so it's sad it's a waste of time to watch these videos there's no help whatsoever
I have the discontinued Ultra 339, but it's basically the Pro without coil split and with an acoustic pickup and onboard tuner. Great guitar, feels amazing to play, and I'm not a fan of Les Pauls due to weight or 335s due to size, so this is the perfect guitar from Gibson for me. Would highly recommend.
I have a feeling you would make a Daisy Rock guitar sound good. Great video unbiased you let the guitars do the talking. I bought an EPI WildKat and rewired it with Gibson wire and love it. You have try out at least one Semi-Hollow
I kept the pickups they are not as nice as true Gibsons but they sound pretty solid. Changing to a Gibson harness made a world of difference. I Also changed bridge to roller bridge which works very well with the Bigsby.
It's interesting the way some people report having no tuning problems with a Kat and others are plagued by tuning issues. Unfortunately, mine is more the latter. ;-) I put on a roller bridge (it does help some) and bought a new GraphTech nut to install shortly. I'm glad to hear about the "world of difference" in upgrading the wiring. Thanks, Michael.
Ron - These are my total modification to the my Kat... It does not make it a full fledged Gibson but the difference is very pleasing to the ear and make it very close but not still Gibson. I changed the wiring harness to the true Gibson braided wiring, upgraded the bridge to a roller bridge, changed the nut to a Gibson nut, and had the guitar set up by an actual luthier. I did almost all the work myself but had a true luthier set up the neck and took care of tuning issues. The looks of the WildKat is amazing where it had flaws now it is as solid as can be. Total Cost $110.
I used Gibson Braided Wire - replaced one wire at a time - www.ebay.com/itm/PRO-GRADE-Braided-Shielded-Guitar-Wire-25-feet-Gavitt-MADE-IN-USA-/301187657862?epid=1531949450&hash=item46202ef086:g:umkAAOxyW9RRWhsh
That Ibanez sounds really cheap. But honestly, you were always on the edge of breakup if not actually overdriven, so there were no clean sounds to compare. Why not?
Ron Light, I think your right. The A-93's, which are the next level up from the A-73's have the Super 58 pups that they put in their core models, and the sound is night & day. I'm sure that 73 is just as comfortable to play as the 93 though.
i have a tanglewood chicago.part exed for an epiphone sg custom. the sound is fucking amazing. its so good i declined a straight swap for a strat and turned down several good ££££ offers
Vgsilva...to make fun of the way others talk, you really are a waste of air. Oh wait...was this your attempt at being a troll? Egads man...find a better hobby.
The Gretsch are Broad'Tron....not Tone. Poor production values on this vid. Too much background music and funky camera work. And you don't sound particularly knowledgeable about the guitars hardware.
ok, first off ....know your products before making yourself look foolish. The Gretsch doesn't have Broad-tone pickups, they're BroadTron. Secondly, the Gretsch doesn't have a rosewood fingerboard, it's Laurel. Third, it's not "Epi-foam"....it's Epiphone! Oh, and you said you'd put the guitars through their "places" ...really? Lastly, said you would play clean and with overdrive....what happened with the clean sound?
What about a clean comparison? With this amount of crunch, they all sound the same.
I thought they all sounded more similar than different.
I agree. A clean-tone comparison is crucial for a true side-by-side sonic shoot-out. We can then hear more of their dynamics and personalities. Maybe you could make a "Part 2" video concentrating on clean sounds & sounds with
non-distortion/overdrive pedals, ie: chorus, flanger, phaser, delay etc. I would love to hear all three guitars using BOTH pickups,
some reverb & delay, AND a wah pedal (Vox Clyde McCoy please!!). That would be phenomenal!! What do you and all your viewers think about that?!
Greetings from Montreal-Canada!!
Thanks, Guitar Norman.
i like guitar demos with zero effects. it ruins the review for me. but that's my opinion. good day.
I agree. You need a clean (no effects) sound to hear the subtle differences between the 3. And it would've been better if he had used a pick for a crisper sound, instead of the muffled sound of his fingers.
absolutely. the effects become at least half the sound, right? this isn't an effects demo. We actually CAN'T hear the differences dude.

Shhh, it's best not to wake him!
There was clean tone, next to last I think. Semi hollow makes clean sound a bit fuzzed out

I bought an used same model/color Ibanez for $275. It was nice watching the AS73 going toe-to-toe with an Epiphone and a Gretch.

The Gretch certainly looks cool
Darren Aitcheson Ive got one trust me they are better than any other rock guitar and perfect for jamming
IMHO Ibanez puts out a fantastic Semi-Hollow &'HollowBody guitars, i.e. The George Benson, etc ...

You play with soul. Nice tone too.
love your playing very appropriate for the guitars... well done.
My epiphone 339 is an amazing guitar , tone & playability to die for , easily as good as the Gibson
Michael Woolley I’m seriously looking at a 339pro , please tell me more . Coil tapping fun ?
The Ibanez sounds the best, to me, but wow those F holes look odd. I didn't expect a guitar under $500 to have pickups that reactive.
Just got the epiphone dot ! I love it, been waiting for a hollow jazz/ blues machine!
I just got an Epiphone dot also and I love the sound
I own the Ibanez with Grover's added and it's an outstanding guitar ... Good video ...
I bought a Oscar Schmidt,Delta King,Washburn,OE-30 used for 100.00 I set it up and did what we all do to make it for me and I have to say it plays and sounds great.

😊Nice, thank you. A good demo - R

all of them sounded sweet. Since I can't judge their playability, the Gretsch is by far the most beautiful. Hands down.

a bad batch try before you buy never had a problem with any epiphone but most guitars need a good set up to suit your playing style
I want that Gretsch
I think they all sound pretty sweet. Would be hard for me to decide.
I bought the Gretsch yesterday. Much richer, smoother sound for me. Great video.
So glad I found this video.. I'm lost trying to surprise my son and get the semi hollow body hes been wanting but I'm on a budget that wont budge. Thank you for info. 🎶🎼🎵

Washburn, Cort and Samick also have some good value semis.... IMHO... Oh GREAT playing too btw!!
Neat that he is wearing a Guild tee, whilst demonstrating the competition. Pity Guild doesn't have a comparative model in the price range
Take a drink every time he says "Umm" or "Uhh". Rock those semi-hollows Jeff Goldblum!! Love the playing
love your playing

Wonderfull bluesy played. All Gits are great for this price.
Epihphone Riviera is looking to join my collection here soon, but the streamlined is giving it a run for its money!
Ibanez wins the bake off by a nose!
Honestly can’t thank you enough I was in this trillema for like 4 months now
Which one did you choose i'm in this Dilemma right now
@@senorhanf8497 I ended up buying a les paul, however having played the ibanez, i'd say that this ibanez had the perfect neck for me

Good video - ive been looking for a cheaper SH and think I may just have to try that Ibanez.
I like ALL of these with my preference in clean sound at the bridge pickup going to the Epiphone. Like he says, though, it's a tough choice.
If I might ask, why did you go with the Dot and not the 335 Pro? The Pro is barely more expensive that the Dot and still well under $500.
J-Rod26
Good point.
Probably due to it’s popularity
i love how he says epiphone has a mahogany fingerboard...
Demo with out a pick?
Those are jazz guitars but you're playing crunchy blues so they all sound the same.
I have an artcore AS73G and I fucking love it. However I am going to be replacing the pickups. The stock ones aren't the best. They're kind of tinny
Roll back the tone.
Once you go the other way you can't add it back.

The Epiphone does NOT have a mahogany fretboard. It's rosewood just like the other two. It does have a mahogany neck, however.
Dangelico?
Epiphone casino??
Ibanez or gretsch, the dot would really piss me off having the jack plug on the front🤣🤣🤣🤣
and the Cort guitars?
Man you could make a tin can with elastics on it sound good
My Harley Benton HB-35 curb stomps everything else in the price range
Firefly guitar on Amazon. The same or better than the Epiphone. $139.00 including shipping. About 3 times a year.
Clean clean clean..?
I can usually tell tonal differences pretty well on vids, but I can't even detect when you change guitars on this one, without looking. Strange.
epiphone es 335 pro
They all sound good and that is because of your playing. Good job Nick. But I would have to playthem myself. The neck, weight and playability can not be gleened by watching you play. So I would have to play them myself. I have played these guitars and I like the Ibanez and the dot. I do not care for the Gretsch for the type of music you were playing.
the onley thing that it not hellp in the epi. is the front jack cable.
ariel Cruz I actually prefer it especially when playing sitting down
I agree ariel. I still would choose it over the others. It sounds so crisp. I had one yrs ago and wish I never got rid of it.
Did you just say mahogany fingerboard?
Ibanez!
The Epiphone Dot rocks value for money But there isalso a even cheaper Harley Benton HB 35 for aprox 200 bucks
Realist 2.0 I. Ant grind a reliable source that says HBs are better or even as good as Epiphone. It’s either commenters (half of which say they’re terrible) or people that are obviously paid or given free HBs that wouldn’t dare say anything negative.
Tanglangfa What is ANT GRIND?? Edit please using dots on right (menu)
Ibanez wins.
I would have gotten the red Gretsch if they sell it here in Singapore , but too bad , it's all in green >:(
Sadly another over distorted guitar demo making it impossible for someone to judge clean tones which is actually the essential way to judge guitar so it's sad it's a waste of time to watch these videos there's no help whatsoever
Its fuzz...
Agreed. Let's hear some clean tones.
thats a crazy thing.
Too much distortion too be able to tell them apart?!
They all sound the same. Very good!
Great clip but the added visual effects are really annoying
Anyone here got a epi 339? Thinking about getting one.
MalyRasta 420 me best guitar I've owned
Michael Woolley cool yea I like that it has a smaller body like a les Paul.
had one a really great guitar had to sell mine wish i had not
I have the discontinued Ultra 339, but it's basically the Pro without coil split and with an acoustic pickup and onboard tuner.
Great guitar, feels amazing to play, and I'm not a fan of Les Pauls due to weight or 335s due to size, so this is the perfect guitar from Gibson for me. Would highly recommend.
I have a epiphone casino coupe, great guitar for the price.
Epiphone is the best bang for the buck.
so wright
Not.
Wow how many guitars are playing in the backing track? I'd like the next video to include sitars to give us more of a challenge please.
You can't tell what a hollow body sounds like unless it's clean!!!! 🤔
Epiphone Dot...
next time say what pick ups you are using so we can make a choice...
I have a feeling you would make a Daisy Rock guitar sound good. Great video unbiased you let the guitars do the talking. I bought an EPI WildKat and rewired it with Gibson wire and love it. You have try out at least one Semi-Hollow
"Gibson wire" meaning a wiring harness? And you kept the stock pickups?
Ron Light I think he was wanting to show the response going into break-up for each pick up
i have a tanglewood chicago.part exed for an epiphone sg custom. the sound is fucking amazing. its so good i declined a straight swap for a strat and turned down several good ££££ offers
Epiphone 335 pro..the very best
You whale bro .
Dig your playing.
Not because I have the same Gret you picked 😎
Bad move playing a demo with your fingers Not everyone does that you know and it colors the tones
"Here we have aaaaaaaaa... aaaaaaaaa... Ibanez, and there aaaaaaaaa... aaaaaaaaa... Epiphone..."
Vgsilva...to make fun of the way others talk, you really are a waste of air. Oh wait...was this your attempt at being a troll? Egads man...find a better hobby.
7:04 wtf maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan :D
this guy got the blues...
Try the Firefly.
No.
Were you high or something? Lol
Is that lonely horse i see there
If
Distortion sounds like distortion.
hard to follow -
The Gretsch are Broad'Tron....not Tone. Poor production values on this vid. Too much background music and funky camera work. And you don't sound particularly knowledgeable about the guitars hardware.
Yeah and he said the Epi has a maghony fretboard, right...
ok, first off ....know your products before making yourself look foolish.
