  • Episode 22 of Love At First Scent
This was a Facebook Live broadcast* streamed on Friday 2nd November 2018. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
The perfumes covered in this episode were:
    - Dawn from Frederic Malle (at the start of the video)
    - Tommy Now from Tommy Hilfiger (at the 28:30 minute mark)
    - In The Wood For Love from Roos & Roos (at the 42:00 minute mark)
    - Spiceair from Hermetica (at the 1:09:30 minute mark)
    and the classic scent was
    - Nu from Yves Saint Laurent (at the 57:00 minute mark)
    ---
    Here's the blotter update:
    - The Malle is teetering rather skilfully, I must admit, between the seductive heights of the opening leather-rose section and the woody-ambery base. Extremely commendable work, for what it is.
    - The Hilfiger is one too many sweaty t-shirts worn by a troupe of overactive teenagers.
    - In The Wood For Love has dried down to an elegant, woody-musky affair. Still very 80s, in an enjoyable way.
    - Spiceair remains intriguing and fascinating: strange galbanum-lily pumped into a wide open whiteness.
    - And Nu is an utter delight: the precision with which the woods, spices, incense and labdanum co-ordinate with each other is heavenly.
    * I'm sorry to say that this episode was affected by some kind of technical issue I don't fully understand; I should have known something was up when a few people said they weren't seeing a picture. Whatever the cause of the problem, the end result appears to be that the video isn't in HD and that its quality varies from acceptable to poor on several occasions. (Thankfully, the audio is fine.) I can only apologise, but I won't delete the episode, on the premise that you'd rather have low-quality visuals than none at all. Better luck next time...
[Samples of the above provided by the brands, except the YSL which is from my personal collection.]
Thanks very much indeed for watching!

I really wonder about the degree to which we think that the newer Malle scents are more mass appealing isn't itself a remnant of psychology and not of our actual noses. Once we find out that he's sold to Lauder, it only makes to EXPECT his perfumes to change olfactory direction - and therefore we perceive that to be the case. But I genuinely wonder if someone with an equally proficient nose who didn't know about the sell to Lauder would have perceived the same directional shift in perfumery. (In short, I wonder if it's real and not just confirmation bias on a large scale.)

John, that's a very valid point, thank you. And I guess the answer is that we just won't know until we find somebody with no knowledge whatsoever of Malle to smell all his perfumes. Mind you, his style did start becoming 'grander' in the run-up to the Lauder purchase, so maybe there isn't just one factor responsible for the current state of his scented output.
      Thanks for watching.

Hi Persolaise. Hope you are enjoying August. I'm glad "Music for a While" was mentioned. I was so charmed by the name but not impressed by the juice.
    "Damn you, technology!" 😀

Thanks for this great video! In the wood for love sounds very interesting, I'm definitely going to try this one.
And what a perfect choice is Nu! In case you need inspiration for a classic scent for your next LAFS, I'm very curious about your opinion on Guerlain's Vol de Nuit or Penhaligon's Bluebell.

Thank you for these reviews, especially the Nu one. I'm really intrigued by it now. Will try to track it down. As for the suspicion that Frederic Malle is no longer what it use to be. Body milk? ?Shower gel?? Nuff said. BTW - I'm a subbie from Switzerland.

+Persolaise Perfumes Well I guess if 9ne can't afford to fork out £500+ for 50 ml they may go for the 200 quid deodorant or shower gel right? 😉

@@seilanemsei :-D Thank goodness some of the shower gels are around £40... which is still pretty pricey for a shower gel!

Oh no... Hermetica says it's supposed to be rubbed in on skin... I hope the notes all come up on a blotter! Really curious about Amberbee because I'm really into Myrrh at the moment.

I had Nu but can’t remember at all what it was like so thank you for choosing it as your classic scent . I don’t think I need to retry or do I? I must have enjoyed the packaging as looking at it now I do .

Music for a while, Promise, have been somewhat boring for the caliber of the Perfumers. Lately they been promoting nothing but portrait as its their best seller aside from Musc Ravageur and thats really it😴 they need to bring back Pierre Bourdon, and also do new collaborations with other Star perfumers such as Jaques Polge, Francois Demachy, MFK, Etc etc..rather than the same ones of the past 10 years except Maurice Rousel😴😴 they need to do more videos with their perfumiers talking about their fragrances updated videos rather than Frederic taking all the credit.

E M Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to write. You’re certainly not the first person to have expressed doubt about their most recent output. I can’t see them working with Demachy or Polge, but I do believe they’re trying to build up relationships with a new generation of perfumers.

Persolaise Perfumes even Alberto Morillas, or Jean Paul Guerlain would be legendary and unique. But I doub that’ll ever happen.
