Portrait of a Lady and La Douleur Exquise are two different worlds to me. One is in your face…strong…a little overwhelming and sometimes I’m just happy to submit, the other is bit reserved, has a lot to say , takes it’s time because it’s confident and knows you’ll stick around to share the story.
I love POAL, en Passant, l’eau d’hiver, Iris Poudre, Lys Mediterranea, Rose et Cuir , and Carnal Flower. And Synthetic Jungle…I really love that one…I like the flower notes in the bitterness. And the Vetiver one is fantastic. I don’t have these last two. I have Musc Rav. … it was a present and I loved it for about a week. To me, it’s a little boring….
Rose et Cuir is so easy to wear. It reminds me a lot of Galop from Hemes.

Totally agree on the castoreum twist in Promise. It dramatically levels up the whole composition imho

Ramsey, a quick question. I got myself a 2016 musc ravageur , the scent is really deep and macerated but i don't smell nothing musky or animalic or pissy about it. Surprisingly i smell some tobacco in it, some vanille with a very clean musk and some amber combined with with a tobacco accord. It reminds me a lot of tobacco vanille by TF. Do you smell some sort of tobacco in any of your musc ravageur bottles?
I never thought that but it doesn't mean you are wrong 🤷🏻♂️

My two favorites are The Moon & French Lover. The Moon is worth the hype. It's mesmerizing. The dry down on French Lover is interesting too. It can come off pretty peppery at first, but once it sits it is amazing. I feel pretty classy wearing it. This fragrance house has quickly become my favorite next to Le Labo.

I had the same journey with Jean Claude Ellena's perfumes, I felt they were kind of "meh" at first but as my nose develops and I smell more things I've come back to his scents and can appreciate the delicate and subtle beauty of his compositions.
It seems to be a common cycle ... its also a great example of why I never sell perfume... u never know how your nose will develop over the years
The same for me with Jean Claude. Very subtle artist. Even Terre de Hermes I rate as the best designer frag From past 20 years.
I have 6 Frederic Malle fragrances - POAL, Musc Ravageur, Noir Epices, French Lover, Promise, and Lys Mediterranee. I love POAL and Musc Ravageur, but if I'm honest with myself, I'd mark Noir Epices as my favourite. I've smelled nothing else like it. Promise has this sharp medicinal tinge to it that I'm still struggling with, but it gets better every time I try it. French Lover wasn't at all what I expected when I got it, and last time I tried it, I really didn't find it very exciting. Lys Mediterranee is far and away the most potent fragrance I own. One spray just completely fills the whole room for a day - it's insane.
I really want to sample a few others - Music for Awhile and the rest of the Desert Gems in particular.
I have never smelled Lys Mediterranee... would love to one day... thanks so much for adding so much to the conversation 😊
I second your choice of Noir Epices. Seek out a sample of Creed's 'Orange Spice' and 'Epicea'.
what do you like about POAL? Im skeptical of the rose but I do like rose in LV ombre nomad, nasamatto baraonda, MFK silk mood, and MFK l'homme a la rose
I bought Cuir Ottoman when it first came out years ago in the 100 ml bottle, and my experience of the fragrance was (and still is) just the same as yours: soft sillage, moderate projection and poor longevity. I don't regret the purchase at all, though, but i dont think you need to seek out a vintage botle as both the old and new formulations sound identical. Just my two cents; others might have a different opinion. Coincidentally, I wore this today for the first time in years, and then I stumbled upon your video and felt compelled to chime in 😀
Thanks for sharing your experience with the vintage version of cuir ottoman .. i still like scent and I still think it punches way above its price tag as far as value for $... just wish I didnt have to re-apply every 4 hours 😐

Man you really hit the nail on it’s head speaking about Dawn. It’s such an amazing incense to me, not really about oud for me as well but man is it a really really good incense.

It's an amazing rank, thank you. I prefer so much more La Douleur Exquise than POAL. I appreciate the thickness and the technicality of the composition but brings no emotions to me, plus it's sweet. I genuinly don't understand the trend here. There's others gems in my opinion in FM collection : "Eau de Magnolia" (from Carlos Benaïm) and "Lys Méditéranée". Beautifull and poetic perfumes. Rose et Cuir is fantastic and unique.
I have a very special vintage malle on the way too.. should have wait to do this video once ut arrived 🤦♂️

I discovered Noire Epices last year. I am wearing it today because of your review I listened to last night.
The warm spicy structure of clove, nutmeg and cinnamon are in many of our favorite Orientals with oud. Like Siberian Musk or Bortnikoff Mysterious Oud.
Also with rose and the bitter Orange. I get tired of Oud sometimes, as it's weird in a way. This s is a great oriental without oud. It does have an amber base with woods. The rose is subdued, but r after 10 minutes in, becomes more appearant. The floral is more of a geranium/rose as in Rose and Cuir.
When I first tried it, I thought it's not very spicy, as the name implied. But now I enjoy and pick up the black pepper, and get the "spicy" theme.

Great review! French lover is my signature scent since 2011, Promise is my second favorite from the line followed by Vetiver Extraordinaire.
The moon is in my buy list.

I haven't smelled all of them and there's a few I only smelled once, however my top 3 would be:
1 - Promise
2 - Carnal Flower
3 - Music for Awhile
After the festevities I need to recheck Monsieur
I have a vintage bottle of a pre-estee lauder malle on the way... i am thinking i may have been a bit to trusting with the whole "you dont need to worry about reformulations with malle" comment.. more to come on this very soon... thanks so much for watching & commenting 😊
Amazing video Ramsey! I agree with your list, especially with regard to POAL. I have so many beautiful rose scents, I could not justify paying so much money for POAL. When it first came out I bought the three 10ml vials and still have one unused one left.

Thats a pretty subjective question... i did a top 100 of my favorite perfumes when we reached 1000 subs .. go check that video out for my ranked list 🍻
Finally smelt The Moon and The Night. Prefer The Night more to The Moon but the price is outrageous. Walked away with a 100ml of Promise at 30% discount instead. What a dangerous trip to the retailer 😅

I'm suprised you say formulation with frederic malle isn't an issue.... imo they're Creed 2.0 and everything I've sniffed recently is just less and in some cases have notes turned right down. I don't mean pre-Estee Lauder either as my bottles are 2016 onwards... but the EL accountants have been cutting costs and increasing the profit margin for sure.

Great list. I only own 3 FM now Dawn, Parfums de Therese, and Une Rose. I had Promise and Eau d'Hiver but sold so I could get Dawn. Dawn is absolutely over priced. Incense fragrances are probably my top 3 genres of scents so I had to have it. If there ever was an incense fragrance that was worth $600 this would be it. Not an oud fragrance at all.

Hi Ramsey, great video. FM is one of my all time favourite brands. I have both POAL and La Doleur Exquise and I love them both. For me POAL is a spicy rose whereas LDE is more of an animalic rose with the big castoreum note. I'm looking to track down a vintage POAL but so far I haven't been successful in my search. I've only just recently started buying vintage so I'm not the best in tracking down the scents I want😂

It's great that you did a review of Malle. They weren't my love at first sight. I was walking around of his perfumes for a long time but finally got their beauty. What do you think about Bigarade Concentré ? As for me, it is beautiful dry fresh scent, without "usual" freshness and sweetness. But the thing which stops me from getting it is it's longevity... But never the less, it would be very interesting to know what do you think about the fragrance as it is

@@RamseytheRam Got it 👍😄 It's impossible to know everything, and there's no such necessity 💯. In case of Bigarade concentré I'm interested of hay note, like a grass dried under the sun. It gives to it very particular and classy freshness in the base

I tried Carnal flower first in the winter; I remember the menthol-ly notes stood out to me. It's still a big bad floral.
Big bad floral is a great way to describe it... i think eucalyptus is the perfect note to compliment the green touches of tuberose.... but it is big & bad alright 😂😂
Hi Ramsey, I'm not into Frederic Malle's perfumes. I've tested most of them and I didn't get impressed by any of them. The only one I did like more it was Monsieur. but I think it's not worthy... for me I mean.
They're good but no-one caught my attetion to pay what they ask for.

Frederic Malle is my favorite parfum house! The quality is very good and the smell is very natural! Yes, it's difficult to get a vintage bottle, I only have on vintage bottle in my collection being it une rose 50 ml ( bought for 90€) here in Madrid Frome somebody who didn't liked it, but for me is like paradise smell! In My collection I almost have 40 bottles of Frederick Malle, i want to complete all pieces 😅! About promise , I have bought 5 bottles , sometimes people here in Madrid are selling Frederic Malle bottles, because at the first sniff they don't like it,😂 and that's good for me. Bought almost all the bottles at half of price, eldor example promise I bought for 130€ 2 bottles 100ml, and 160€ for another 2 bottles 100ml, and last one 30 ml left for 80€! For me it's a sin not to buy them for this price😂! Also bought 4 bottles of portrait of a lady for the same price more or less! 2 bottles of noire epices. 3 bottles of lipstick rose. 2 bottles of en passant. (All of them 100 ml). 4 bottles of uncut gem , some of them for 100€- 130. Also got, 1 of music for a while, 1 le parfum de Therese, 1 geranium pour monsieur, 2 of Angeliques sous la Pluie, 2 of rose and cuir, 1 of monsieur, 1 the night, 1 the moon, 2 carnal flower, 1 of une rose 50 ml vintage and 2 of 100ml being this my favorite natural rose fragrance. For sure I'm missing a few bottles that I have but I forgot now. I'm not spending money of alcohol, clubs and girls, and dit that 2 times a month I can buy a bottle, waiting for the right moment for a very good deal😅! I'm 27 years old, and in the future I'm sure I'll complete all the collection! People don't understand my hobby but I don't care😂, when almost all the people waste money on bad things , I prefer to buy something awesome! Best regards from Madrid, see you! 😊

That's a tough one... I think Blue Oud better highlights the oud note itself...but The Moon is a more intricate composition

Great list Ramsey! Some FM fragrances are indeed exceptional. Some of my favs are Poal, Music for a while, Dries Van Notten, Musc Ravageur and Superstitious. Also your#1 probably my #1 as well 😉

I have a 50ml bottle of Rose et Cuir and I adore it. I wish I had purchased the 100 ml back in that day.
I did the same thing with Music for Awile as I did with POAL. I bought the three 10ml bottles. This fragrance had me with the word music because along with perfumes, music is also my love, even though I never heard any music while applying it.
I never tried the Moon because of the price. I do have small flacons of Promise.
I do have Noir Epices and like that one but I never thought it got any love from other frag heads. I also have several other old Frederic Malle scents, some of which were lauded by others and others which were ignored.

The Moon is hands down not only Frederic Malle's best fragrance in my opinion, but my all time Favorite Fragrance. I love Julien Rasquinet's work, Naomi Goodsir Bois d'Ascese is another fabulous creation of Monsieur Rasquinet. Your number one, Promise, does not make my top 5 from Frederic Malle because of the just launched Hope. Which smells like Promise but much smokier (I personally like it more than Promise). My top 5 are: 1-The Moon 2-Hope 3-Portrait of a Lady 4-Monsiuer 5 Rose & Cuir. But the crazy thing is that even though I love Hope I don't think I will ever pull the trigger on that one because even though it is an improved version of Promise I can't justify at least for now to pay 1140 dollars for Hope when Promise costs 470 dollars and they are very similar, being the smokiness of Hope the only difference I can detect.
I have yet to smell Hope but one day I would like to, my thoughts have changed a bit since I made this video and I would have to say I would agree with the Moon at #1 and promise at #2

Phenomenal stuff mate, absolutely love a bunch of these myself. Sadly, I was about to purchase some MR but was so disappointed buy the new formula, I tried my luck with a clone made here in Australia, and surprisingly to my nose it’s better and more like the old version 😬

Promise is in my top 5 of my 200 bottle collection, and I think I’ll hold off on Portrait of A Lady and look into some of the other Frederic Malles you mentioned. I just need to find Munassir first😂

I usually don’t buy a full bottle until a scent “haunts” me because they’re so friggin expensive. I’ve been smelling many FM perfumes in the last few months and only Promise, POAL, Iris Poudre, and Lys Mediterranee have made me long for smelling them again and again. Bigarade Concentre is enjoyable but not memorable. I can’t understand how MR is that popular. To each their own I guess, or maybe the reformulation is in fact a quality regression.

How long does the green apple stay on your skin ?
Ummm I cant say for sure but if I had to guess maybe the first 30 minutes its noticable and then for another 30 minutes its a ghost of a green sour apple note 🍏
Promise is most prominent one in this line … completely agree💯

Funny thing - I love how there's s definite similarity (to my nose at least) between Frederic Malle's Promise & Epic Man (Amouage). But my parter (who loves Promise) can't stand the Amouage.

When you say The Night is POAL + oud, do you mean that literally? Like, POAL is actually in there, or did you mean there’s just an allusion to it? Glad to hear Oud Maximus is a suitable substitute; I went from feeling foolish for spending $350 to feeling like I’m savvy with money :)

Yes oud maximus is a steal for 350 when you compare it to the night!
It has a shadow of POAL in the background...if you know POAL you will smell the familiar touches in the Night.. its just 4 to 5 Times more expensive than it should be IMHO
Best mint fragrance period... ELDO "you or someone like you" I'm always disappointed when I wear any other mint fragrance... :)
I have yet to sniff you or someone like you ... but if its that good i will put it on the to sniff list 😊
Music for a while hints at the fougere direction but stops before being a fougere. it is like Patchouli Intense from Nicolai: both feature lavender, patchouli, geranium: while MFAW has pineapple, PI has rose. They cannot be fougeres!
It feels like a modern fougere to me so thats what I will continue to call it
@@RamseytheRam Beau de Jour is a modern fougere as well, but there you can feel the barbershop vibes. In music for a while, no barbershops smelling at all. Also, fougeres don’t tend to be warm and dark this Music for a while.
My favourite is Monsieur. No doubt then followed by the desert gems except dawn. Followed by Poal, Cf and Mfaw.
My least favorite in my collection is French lover although people seem to love it. Oddly enough FL is my most worn malle to date.

@@RamseytheRam yes because I live in the middle east so it's really the only thing from Fm that I own that I can wear in the summer heat. I just got CF this month which seems to fit the bill too. My FL is 80-90% used from a 100ml so yes I’ve worn it a lot. It’s amazing but spice and wood and royal Oud in creed both being similar takes some of the originality away and the performance is definitely the weakest from everything else I own. I’ve never had anyone notice FL more than an hour or 90 minutes after applying. Maybe once.

If you’re thinking about getting The Moon like I was, seek out the vintages. Just got 10ml decant of the new stuff, dumped a full 1ml on myself and my friends in an enclosed room didn’t even know I was wearing perfume until I mentioned it and had them sniff me directly up close. And it’s gone in like 6 hours tops. 😢
The only way I was going to justify the price of a bottle if this was how well it was supposed to perform so I could conserve sprays. Unfortunately, not anymore. So far, I’ve found I need to spray 6-7 times and respray every 5 to 6 hours. My 10ml decant is half gone in 2 days! 😮

To contrast, I A/Bed with Roja’s Amber Aoud since they fill a similar goal of sweet, fruity, western-ish oud, and that blew it out of the water on performance (and I got it at a discounter for half the price of the Malle per ml). But the Moon is still very very good, and you can actually smell the Oud in it 😅 I’ll pick up a bottle eventually but will wait for a really good deal. Promise comes first…
Just find a bottle from the first few years of its release.. the moon is one of the biggest frags I have ever smelled 🐽
Ok, the seller (ebayer) is adamant that the bottle is legit but I have high doubts as they can’t send a picture or any other proof of legitimacy. I got yet another decant, this time from an online shop (can’t seem to find one straight from FM) and it is a lot different-> much deeper, more natural, less synthetic… I’m pretty sure the first I got was a cheap clone (honestly still beautiful if not a bit weak), just for the record here. Still not particularly strong. I’d rate the performance as average, 5/10, def not close to nuclear. In any case, will be picking up a FB very soon. I’ll just be sure the seller has a good return policy.
Also sampled Rose & Cuir and Monsieur. Both amazing! I had only tried PoaL and a couple others before, but I am definitely a big fan of this house now. I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to get FBs of FM.
Just picked up a “vintage” Musc Ravageur on the ‘Bay as well as Promise. Phenomenal stuff!

On newer bottles, usually the number is the year.
AC0 would likely be 2020. The older bottles had mfg & expiration dates on them.

Uuuh no surprise Promise being no.1 😂 it's nose fullfuiling, massive, regal , dry, wet , woody, and VERY textured like eugine mentioned , i don't know how this fragrance got this so many changes that depends on your enviorment like today where i could have sworn it's different and confused whether i wore the same fragrance or not , i could smell the fragrance changing little by little by the hour while as a whole it kinda smelled the same imo (i like that) complex!
I got wierd experience with promise, at the first 3 wears i literally could smelled it on my skin the whole day that green, apple in the opening with the cypriol & castorium mingling at each other beautifully at the base , but the next few wear it dissapear it doesn't seem to be as long lasting or projecting like it should
Fast forwards a more months now i tried it again and with having more "all natural" ingredients fragrance in my arsenal , i feel i got robbed a lot of money by it not "filling" my nose enough... but then i go with promise and yeah it the others bottles out of the park , all the synthetic talk just adds to the wearing experience for me i love it, just sharing my thoughts ❤

I cannot stand the STENCH of musc ravageur...one of the worst fragrances i ever tried. Smells gross to me, like cat urine and stinky old people.
