  • I was 14 or 15 when I first came across the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The "mothers milk" album had just been released. They appeared in some horribly tacky movie we had snuck into in the cinema.
Guitar music was very far outside my teenage comfort zone.... almost frowned upon. 🤔🤣 We had synthesisers and samplers now! We could "sequence" in Ataris and Amigas. What did we still need guitars for? I was into Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb 🤔😁 Rock was nothing to me. The Stones bored me, and albeit I loved the chord progression of the Beatles their sound was just soooo dated to my ears. And the "birth of Metal" did nothing for me either. My friends got into it. I never did. I don't like distortion much. (The "birth of techno" came a few years after. That was my thing back then!)
But the Peppers were the big exception. They had what I missed in eg Metallica which all my friends were suddenly into 🙄
Their songs float naturally, but remain fresh to the ear for the whole song period. It's because they find the right mix of predictability and surprise. (I consider this the ultimate recipe for good song writing BTW. And those who know how to do this can get by with even just two chords... try "love is a stranger" by Eurythmics. 2 chords. The whole song! )
That's maybe why the Peppers are still my favorite "guitar music".

... the actual RHCP arrangement differs, their tempo isnt wobbly wobbly and their pedal not down too much... They don't even have a pedal... Or a piano....It's an improv! 🤔🙄😁😅🎶🎶🎶
