    I owned a 999 back when they first came out. I wanted to love her, I really did. I saw more problems with her than my prior 30 bikes put together. It was like being married to a porn star who is also prone to committing domestic violence. Like every domestic violence victim, I thought it was me. That I needed to change. That things would get better. I finally realized that things wouldn’t get better right about the time the top end blew up. Ducati bought it back because it was such a piece of shit. I blew the dust off my R1, which had been sitting for almost 6 months. Fired right up as if I just rode it the day before. I’ll never be mesmerized by Ducati again.

    Enjoyable and informative video! I've been smitten with the Supersport S since I saw the first picture. Much like yourself bikes tend to be my primary mode of everyday travel so I've been trying to learn as much as possible about what it's like to live with a Ducati. Thank goodness you actually put miles on your Panigale and I stumbled on your video. The only repair I found unsettling was the forks. That just sounds way too soon for the coating to be coming and way too expensive if you hadn't had the warranty.

  • @acepantstibs1587
    @acepantstibs1587 7 лет назад +2

    Thanks for the review. I really appreciate it. I'm currently at the only point in my life I'll ever be at, with enough disposable income to go out and just buy a new bike. I expect kids will be demanded soon, and by the time that's over, I'll be surprised if there's much fun available at all that still powered by fossil fuels. I've got an old '56 Velocette, '79 Guzzi Lemans, an '88 650 HawkGT(BROS) and a '98 zx7r, and I love em all to bits for different reasons, (and I can convert them all to run on alcohol if I have to), but always wanted that Ducati.
    It would have been a 916, but, my Mrs is German, and from a family obsessed with things being perfect, in order, reliable, of quality, and her dads told her all about older Ducati reliability and practicality. The other odd thing is that she's consistently encouraging the purchase, and she basically hates motorbikes. Dirty, smelly, dangerous, noisy, impracticle. This might be because I do a lot of miles, and I have to fix my bikes quite a lot as a result, (and that time could be spent fixing the house). The newest is 19 years old, and has a LOT on the clocks. In the past few months, I've had the original rad problems (fixed by replacing with one shipped from glorious un-salty California - £100 delivered to my door - gracias) Rearsets gear lever break (corroded through where joins the linkage), replaced front master cylinder, brake discs/pads, did my clearances, oil etc. I've got a spare set of forks ready to strip and replace the stanchions on, as I'll need that in a few K. It happens in gluts, and then I need to spend a chunk of cash to keep it roadworthy, and she thinks that would be better spent on a 'problem free' new bike.
    She's also overheard all my youtubing while I learned about all these new electronics, cornering ABS, cornering traction control (both of which, I would rather like, as my commute in the UK is both long at 130 mile round trip, and there's often a sort of 'lucky-dip' type of surface around blind bends, maybe a giant puddle, maybe gravel after the puddle has gone, mud from farm traffic, diesel spills, etc...) and wants it to have all the latest and greatest 'rider saftey aids' cos she doesn't want me to die, which is nice, but it means I can't slip a 916, or a 1098/848 in under the radar, and I think even the 959 panigale lacks a lot of it (I'd have liked the 1098/1198, last of the line really, belts, steel trellis, fits my body too), and leaves me with the latest crop of superbikes. I'm partial to a Kawasaki, so thinking of a zx10r, plush suspension, good brakes, all the electronics, but no downchange on the quickshifter, unless you buy an RR (so I probably would cos its only another 2 grand), but, kinda, standard Jap styling - nothing to write home about. Not reeeeally into the S1000RR - it just doesn't make me need it, even though the heated grips would be lush in winter. I'm sure it's great, but somehow feels too utilitarian, and I don't need to win races on tracks. I'll be trying a fireblade SP2, just for shits and giggles, but I don't want it. I just fancy a go on the bike that McGuinness and Martin couldn't stay on, and getting a test ride is easy here. Rather buy an RC45! Or even an RC51. or both. Yamaha - I'm sure its great, but I'm not into it , it doesn't fit me, I'm tall - rather have a TZR250, (which I'd have a reason to be too big for), a Supermono, or an OWO2 for the money. Suzuki? no interest somehow. KTM - nope. But anyway, yeah, a good objective review - It'd be nice if I could find reviews of the BMW, the Kwak and the Duke all having done 3 British winters, but I think your review is about as close as I'm gonna get with that.
    Is the headlight any good?
    Great music.

    • @acepantstibs1587
      @acepantstibs1587 7 лет назад

      Is it weird that I worry that, if I buy a 1299, in 20 years time, I might not be able to find petrol for it, and then due to all the electronics, it just won't run and I won't be able to ride it?

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  7 лет назад

      If you buy the Panigale S model, it comes equipped with LED headlights which are considerably brighter than conventional lighting. 1299S Panigale, 1290 SuperDuke, SuperDuke GT, Yamaha MT10, and Indian Scout are bikes I would check out.

    • @FancyAnimal

    • @acepantstibs1587
      @acepantstibs1587 7 лет назад

      This is a valid point, but you think we have A/C here? ;) Germans call this 'Worrying about unlaid eggs'.
      I worry more about smashing into a deer, in the dark fog and murk of winter, but not until it nearly happens. Seriously though - they have the whole countryside to stand around in.

    I had SO many problems with my bike when I first bought it. My friends were recommending that I sell it. Even the mechanics at the Ducati dealership were recommending that I sell it - like it was a lemon right out of the factory. But it's just a neat bike for riding around town. Splitting lanes is easy. It's narrow and it makes so much noise. People tell me they can hear me coming from a mile away. I'll be dead before I sell it.

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  6 месяцев назад

      Sorry you had so many problems. Maybe Alfonzo had too much cannoli and sambuca the night before he assembled your motor. You're right about the size....it feels like a scooter compared to the heavy V4. I'm at 45,000 without any problems since I made that video. At 30,000 I adjusted the valves and only 1 valve shim out of the 16 was out of spec. She'll go for a long time. Just change the oil every 3-5K mi and drop the oil pan to blow out the oil pump pickup mesh every 15K. Cheers!

      Jesus, never buy a Buell then! I had an XB12-R from new and it started to corrode after 50 dry miles. It had 2 recalls for items in it's first 6 months and the overall build quality was pretty shoddy.
      In comparison, my 1991 Ducati 900ss had very few problems in the 10 years I had it. I had 1 'major' problem over that time when the voltage regulator/rectifier overheated and caught fire. (It was Japanese, a Nippondenso unit) I replaced it with an aftermarket item that was higher rated and never had anymore problems from it.
      I did 32,000 miles and had it serviced for valve clearances only. Everything else I did myself. Oil filters were incredibly cheap as they are the same item as fitted to a Citroen 2CV! The only thing I would have changed would be the electrical cabling dealing with the starter motor. Too weedy. Beefier cables would have got rid of the problem I had with the bike's poor starting. I had no more problems with it than I had with my previous 3 Japanese bikes.

    no.2 the guy doesn't know that the traction control settings are can be changed .
    remember aswell this bike has had an ecu upgrade which means if it was installed or tuned wrong there's your answer there.

      I,m 65 ive seen Ducati come and go twice. The only person I ever saw with 2 Ducatis , bought the second one to keep the first one running. This is same for Alfa, Fiat even the cars with the horses. All complicated expensive and way over rated. Has anyone ever seen a Ferrari with a 100,000 miles on it. I ride a 2008 Yamaha FZ1 it has 74,000 miles on it. It has never been back to the dealer. Still keeps me smiling .Last year with 70,000 it ran 10.90 quarter mile. Original clutch.may change it this year. But I can work on it. I will say ride what you love thats all that matters

    • @TurtleGP
      @TurtleGP 6 лет назад +5

      The new Ducatis are so much more reliable these days, they aren't the same little company they were when they gained the reputation for being high maintenance and finicky. They are now even better than the standard they were at when Harley owned them. Now with the king of the auto industry in charge, their facilities and manufacturing standards are better than most Japanese. Since the VW Audi Group bought Ducati, the quality and dealership backing has greatly improved. They just haven't kicked their harley reputation yet because not many can afford them so not many are out there to be seen by non enthusiasts that arent savy enough to understand the new engineering and manufacturing standards they are made with.

    • @TurtleGP
      @TurtleGP 6 лет назад +2

      It's like comparing a 50 year old italian supercar to a new Lamborghini. The reliability is night and day. The new Lamborghinis for the last ten years have been basically a bullet proof Audi R8. It's become a reliable, easy to drive, and safe, daily driving commuter. Gone are the days of exoctics that spend more time at the shop than driving on the road. No more being stranded constantly if you aren't a mechanic. They are just as practical as any Japanese sports car, usualy share the same electronics too. Only thing that changes is higher end materials and the styling. A new ducati is like buying a yamaha superbike and upgrading the suspension, brakes, and adding some lightweight wheels and carbon fiber pieces. This is why an R1M with all thise parts costs 23 grand and the new italian superbikes are made in greater numbers and sold for competitive pices. A new Aprilia RSV4 base model is only 16 grand and has similar service intervals as its Japanese counterparts.

    So what i understand from your review (which was really informing) Ducati makes cool looking bikes which have crappy build quality, full of ongoing problems and cost an arm and a leg to fix & maintain... Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick with my bmw which i ride like i stole it. After 15k, i'm yet to face a problem. At least that's my 2 cents worth of opinion. Considering those mirrors, you can keep the change :p

    Very nice review Fancy Animal - thanks for posting it. It was great to see a factual review without any of the typical Ducati owner bias (you know, the one that leaves the viewer realizing that they really believe nothing ever goes wrong with a Ducati - it just can't because it's the Ferrari of motorcycles therefore it's not possible).
    I'd love to have one on with the proper understanding that it's going to be more work then my CBR 600 RR but that it clearly brings a lot to the table in return. Thanks!

    I have the 2012 1199 base model Panigale, and I have 25K miles on my bike. I have had some of the problems that you've experienced and some that you haven't. The swing-arm axle on my bike was loose when I bought the bike. Fortunately the dealership caught that or I'd be dead by now. I'm surprised that you haven't replaced the stock foot pegs. I thought the stock pegs were very slippery. I've had no problems with my mirrors - but I have never folded them back like you appear to have done. Have you ever carried a passenger on your bike? After my swing-arm axle experience, I've been afraid to let anyone else ride with me. Thanks for you thorough review.

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  6 лет назад

      waytoosquirrelly I've had a number of lady friends on the back without issue. I periodically go around and check the wheel, front subframe, and swing arm fasteners. Never been loose. Although I did a track day and the dealer did the front tire swap right before...140mph all day and the front axil clamp screws were loose!!! Check people's work. I suggest you check the front subframe-to cylinder head bolts next time you change the air filter. Cheers!!

      My bike is the 2012 1199 Panigale, the first of the Panigales and the one that drew a LOT of criticism for excessive engine heat. Mine does not have the plastic heat shields that yours has. If you wanted to take your heat shields off, I don't think you'd notice that much difference. Only if I'm stuck in traffic on a very hot day would I say that the engine heat was excessive. Too much was made of that heat problem in my view.

    While I'd never buy a Ducati I must admit they are very pretty bikes. I've ridden a 959 and a 1299 Anniversario and I had the same complaints about both, not to mention the price for what you get.
    I gotta say, you can't really say the bike is comfortable if you've replaced the factory seat. That was one of my biggest gripes with both the 959 and 1299.

      Another scam don't replace unless it shows signs of leaking. Never needed to replace one yet, just don't get dirt on it when changing the oil, if you do wash it with oil, good as brand new

    I know it's an entirely different kind of bike, but my '17 Triumph Street Scrambler is at 18k miles. I've had oil changes, tires, and a new chain and it hasn't needed anything else so far. I already had 20k mile valve clearance check done and it was in spec. I think the 10k service was a few hundred bucks, and the 20k is like 800 or so. Everything else has been rock solid so far. It's a European bike, but it's been a cakewalk to keep it running in good shape.

      KyleP133 that triumph twin is a solid and tested design. I’m up around 34k and haven’t sunk anymore dough into it.. All but 1 valve shim was out of spec at 30k....did it myself. So $2k over 6 years and 34k miles....It’s not a Honda, but that’s a reasonable expense.

    I had a 5SL R6 for a year about 2 years ago and the only thing that needed work was replacing the fork seals, a new battery and pads. It had 28K on the clock, cost me £2K and ran like a dream. I am sincerely shocked just the extent of the issue you had with a bike that is 20 years more modern. Saying that though, if I had the disposable cash I would be riding the new V4 Pan.

    Really cool video that makes you want to ride an 1199! Great sound effects and innovation. Most entertaining bike review I have watched. Thanks! It makes me want to go look at a 2014 with 10,500 miles for $10,000.

      Some dealers including Seacoast Sport Cycle in NH have zero mile bikes purchased from failing dealers that are reasonable money. I was at SC a couple weeks ago and they had a 2014 white air cooled 796 for 8500 bucks, with no miles, and with a warranty. If I only had the space.

    I had a 2012 R1 and put over 9,000 miles on it over the course of three years. Had 1 mile when I bought it. Sold it and later bought a 2005 R6 which I still have now. Zero problems with the R1. Very first day with the R6 I made it 75 to 100 miles away from home and my rear tire went. Bad valve stem. No problems since then and nothing mechanically so far. Roughly 2000 miles down on it so far since last Sept.. Love Ducati's. My all time favorite has to be the 848. Can't believe your videos aren't more popular. Your content is very good.

    love it! my 2014 Daytona 675 is my main source of transportation. only issues were a coolant leak and the seal behind the thermostat housing was replaced. I'm at 30k miles. overall can't complain. plus mine was a leftover so they threw in a quickshifter(which only comes on the R model) triumph race sliders, gel seat and front and rear aluminum Bullitt style brake resivours.
    Overall awesome video my friend! the panigle is my dream bike!
