- A recording of JRR Tokien singing Chip The Glasses And Crack The Plates from The Hobbit. It is in chapter 1: An Unexpected Party.
Lyrics:
Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates-
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!
Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!
Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully with the plates!

Because no one can listen to the epic voice of JRR Tolkien without suddenly feeling the need to re-read the entire Lord of the Rings.
Now if you'll excuse me....
*Goes to re-read the Fellowship of the Ring for the 65th time*
Me who still has to read it for the first time; 👁️👄👁️
@@HayDayEveryday Do so, then report back the experience to us! =)
You hace my sword
It only takes a fortnight.... ah I have felt the urge many a times.
I'm currently reading it, read it in book so thought i might as well listen it on RUclips
You can absolutely hear the joy as he brings his world to life
Yes! And he might have sang this to his children when he was reading "The Hobbit" to them. Brings joy to my heart just picturing the scene
The master teach us how to sing :D
I LOVE how this sounds so similar to the version in the Hobbit movies!!! You can clearly see the inspiration and this makes me so happy. Also why doesn't this have millions of views??
Tolkien's tune for this was the tune they used in the 1977 animated Hobbit, so by the time the Peter Jackson trilogy came out, it had already become the definitive tune, mainly because it was Tolkien's tune.
Sauron disliked this video.
And don't forget the 7 other dislikers:
- Morgoth
- The Witch King
- The Mouth of Sauron
- Gothmog (Balrog)
- Gothmog (Lieutenant of Morgul)
- Azog
- Bolg
Tolkien was a genius. It is such an honor to be able to read his amazing literature.
What a great treasure! I love Tolkien's old man vibrato ))))
A dead man who wrote a piece of your childhood singing a song is somethi that can actually be so personal
Love him pounding out the beat along with it.
I'm so happy there are some recordings of Tolkien singing his songs! I always sing the songs to myself when I read (yes, every time, each song...if I'm around others I sing in my head), and if I'm reading aloud/for an audience I like to accompany myself on plucked psaltery. I usually make up my own tunes, but whenever I find a recording of Tolkien singing the song, I usually rework it so I sing the melody he's come up with, and I compose my own harmony on the psaltery. When I first read the books as a kid, I kept wishing he had been able to include sheet music!
Actually, he did say that many demanded sheet music... :)
If I may ask, what's a Psaltery?
omg, im so happy i can read the book and hear it when it comes to it. thanks
Happy Birthday Professor!
That is true. Tolkien hated all Disney films, the way Walt portrayed the fairy tales and classic works of literature in his own fashion. He was 45 years of age when Snow White came out and I do not blame him for not understanding Disney and I respect his opinion.
Howard Shore got it pretty close to the original jig motif
I like to think they listened to this recording and fashioned the upbeat tempo after this.
the movie did it better !
@Merciless Freak yes it did. Liar
I will give him this it is certainly a fun song to sing
Fun Fact: The Hobbit and Disney's Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs were both released in 1937.
This made my decade.
And my best music list.
i just started reading The Hobbit and finding this gem was a very pleasant surprise :)
i just passed into the west...
I have read that book several times.
Now have I *finally* experienced true enlightenment. I thank you most sincerely with ALL of my heart! I've *never* heard his melodious and BEAUTIFUL voice. I LOVE that man! And not like any smart asses might think. Any real Tolkien fans will obviously understand what I mean :) Thx again! I will sleep GOOD tonight =)
I know. I love him so much. Haha, but not romantically. But everything I found out about him makes me love him even more.
I shall sleep well to-night. :D
He never got to see the movies that were based on his books. Rest In Peace Mr. Tolkien😔
He'd be a perfect wizard on any magical journey, i'd go to him for any advice
You know, he sounds exactly like I'd imagined he would...
Only Sauron could dislike this.
Figures..
And Smaug.
And the Sackville-Bagginses.
oh my.........i dont have words for it.
This made my year
he would have made a cool grampa
Can't wait^^ I wonder why none of the films or cartoons or Tolkien Ensembles ever use his arrangements.
An Unexpected Journey used it, but it had instrumentals and was faster. Also, Andy Serkis sang it in his Hobbit audiobook reading
Made me teary eyed! 🥰
I love this so much !!!
I can die happy now
my heart just swelled
When I finally get my copy of the Hobbit, I'll be sure to read this song in this tune.

I just died and went happily to the Undying Lands
Sauron,Morgoth,Smaug, the Witch king of Angmar and Saruman disliked this video. How predictable.
haha nice vid!
This is fucking adorable.
Not for sure, the most common said reason is that he thinks that the movies "Ruined" the brothers grimm stories. but I think the real reason more is that he didn't quite understand Disney.
Tolkien must of been disappointed when disney came out
He died in '73, so he was around when Disney was.
It's ironic that Tolkien hates disney because it sounds just like a disney song.
Thanks Harry :) I've got 4 more like this to upload!
JRR tolkein is a god among men, too bad he went home, we miss him

Well, I used to have a great deal of time on my hands :).
While I love this version (can't beat the original), I also love the Rankin Bass version of this song
My favorite version of this song is the 1977 version
Rest in peace Tolkien
1982-1973 you live on in are hearts as the king of authors
1892
Luckily he stuck with linguistics and poetry, and not music lmao.
Luckily, he did not require your opinion. :D
Really? I didn't know that. I think this was before Disney though not sure.
