  • Dear Fellow American... buy more wagons!
Yes, you think you need that crossover or sport utility vehicle. Well, the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is here to prove you wrong.
This is basically the Audi Allroad Jr. It's a near-premium longroof that looks good, drives well, and can go deeper into the world of no roads than your average crossover mall cruiser.
Save the wagon... you don't need that CUV.

People fail to realize that wagons are so much better than crossovers. You basically get more room and better dynamics AND better fuel economy with a wagon.

@@thomasward00 no joke, I almost bought that car. I like it but, the cargo room is just not enough. I had an 05 outback before the vw. Back when they were actual wagons. And the crosstrek just doesn’t have the space that a legit wagon can provide. I just couldn’t justify the loss of cargo space if I bought it. So, i didn’t buy it. And The new outback is ridiculously huge now. In the end I got lucky and got an amazing deal on the vw. I pretty much have a newer version of my 05 outback. plus its a manual, its quick, and great for city driving. People even say “Nice subaru!” I don’t even correct them 😏

And if you don't stick, the DSG dual clutch auto trans is among the best auto trans out there. You can also get pretty fast with it - under $1k gets you to 250hp, but you can get very close to 400 with off the shelf mods. It's a Mk7 Golf, after all, and built on the MQB platform... so anything that comes off a Golf R can go on it, and there's a ton of compatibility even with the Audi S3. Tons of potential.

Shame on VW for discontinuing this and the Golf Sportwagen - they were the ONLY affordable wagons offered in the US market. Now, if you want something new, you’ll be spending $50k + for an Audi, Volvo, MB, or Jaguar. Although thankfully, VW dealers still have some new 2019s in their lots, and surprisingly, still advertise them on their company website.

I'm going to say this is a lot like the 2nd-3rd gen subaru legacy outback wagon, I think its too heavy to be likened to the 1st gen outback tho, my limited 1st gen outback was 3180 lbs.
and I have ONLY wagons in my fleet Jeff! proud wagon driver, subaru and volvo wagons, also I had a mazda 6 wagon with a manual trans till the engine went. the V6 mazda used back then was crap, fun while it lasted but crapped out b4 100k miles. Next for my family tho is a VW jetta TDi wagon, hope to find a TDi cup but that is HIGHLY unlikely in my price range, found ONE on autotrader but its $20k and modded, I'm all about stock for the daily drivers unless I had actually money not barely surviving money then I might get something like an MTM modded audi wagon or something tasteful like that, but trying to do stuff to a car you are going to drive everyday while paying for the.... "privilege" of having kids is ludicrous, I mean can you imagine the ass hat that trys to modify a sweet wagon on a budget?! ya that's not happening buddy lol am I right? huh??

Like 95% I'll be on-road anyway and for those 5% off-road that I might do during travel each year should be fine. I think it should be fine for my planned Iceland trip as well, I won't go to "F" roads anyway and I wouldn't do that with CX5 either. Audi A4 Allroad and Volvo are too expensive, Subaru Outback too long, Skoda Octavia Scout maybe would be fine.

Both shocks have been replaced, upper strut bushings, ball joints, lower linkage arms and bushings, etc etc. I should also probably mention that I live in Quebec where the roads are absolutely horrible. Amen! Wagons are the best, SUV's are just minivans in trucks clothing lol.
I was a little upset when they announced this car, because it happened about 30 days AFTER I bought a mk7 GTi (cuz mini wagon). I looked pretty hard at the Golf Sportwagen which looks amazing and kinda like the GLi wagon I always wanted...but transmission and suspension configurations kept me from buying one. You could only get the manual with a 5 speed and multilink rear, or the dsg and the twist beam rear. It hurt my soul to not get the multilink with dsg or a 6 speed with multilink.
Then they announced this goreous awd thing and made my dreams come true...just a month too late for me to buy lol. Then again, if I can somehow convince my lovely lady that we should get rid of her SUV and get a wagon (she likes SUV's for some reason, but I'm working on eroding that)....maybe we could make this work. She DOES like my GTi (though she misses my mk6 GLi quite a lot).

VW offers that. It's called the Golf Sportwagen. The Alltrack without the cladding.

Oh I think so. This has a better gearbox than the Outback. While it is lower to the ground, it is the better car and costs less. This is more a driver's car. And as we know, there's no Mazda 6 wagon or even Hyundai i30 wagon in the US to compete with this.

But you can imagine one wanting a shitty crossover instead?

I'm an enthusiast and I want one...
Plus I already own another wagon project car, and I'm looking at adding a second one this very weekend.
