- Have you gotten a def line code. Most usual is 5488 and it shows heater open. Here your going to see where to look for def lines 4 and 5 and how to replace them. This model is a 2016 cascadia.
Yar man your a good teacher for some reason I normally understand way better anytime I come across you in mix Jah bless
7:50 Maybe not, but a professional like you always double check just to be sure the problem was fixed, great video man thanks
Thank you for your video i have that problem right now im on the road and will be checking it later on
Much appreciated with all your help ive fixed some thing on my Freightliner thank to you 👍🏽
Glad this one came in handy for you. Hopefully more vids on this channel prove to be useful. Always try to save $$ and try it yourself first, it’s al about learning along the way. Stay safe out there.
I replaced the line and cleared the code, but still have the issue..is there a fuse or relay for the spn 5488..
Great instructions and video as always. I need those white def clip for my supply line because the dealer want me to buy a new line just to get the clip. If the line was bad I would I agreed.
Always appreciate that positive feedback man. And yeah there’s nowhere to buy those things separate since they only come on the lines. The fact they shouldn’t come off at all if they do I’d be worried about the slip that they go in by keeping them in.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 got you. Thank you.
Thank You guys 🤝
Just found your video good stuff..
thank you so much, great video.
Thanks for the positive feedback, hopefully more vids on this channel prove themselves useful.
If you don’t fix the def heater, you’ll never have to refill your def. I’m going on year 3 without refilling my def fluid. My truck stopped needing it when the heater went out. It hasn’t caused any problems.
What about check engine lights
Excellent!
Great video it took u 30 minutes it would take me 3 hours
Excellent
Thanks very much
Something weird is happening here. I have a 2014 Freightliner Cascadia since July 2021. It has 1 million kms on it. When the cold season started, I got a code 5488 and both an amber light and a check engine light. The check engine and the code go away intermittently. I mean sometime there for a while and sometimes gone for a while. I made it through the winter with no derate or anything. About 3 days ago, my DEF gauge was showing 2 bars and I suddenly got a flashing DEF amber light. I drove another 75 kms before I got derated to 90 kmh. I limped home like that for another 100 kms. My mechanic cleared the codes (4 of them) and he ran a regen. After that, only one new code showed up. It is 4357 and that is a line heater. I haven't got on the road yet because we are in easter weekend here but I am going out Tuesday. The reason I say it is weird is that 5488 and 4357 are both related to line heaters. I used to have 5488 and now I have 4357. I just don't know what happened. How many line heaters are there by the way? Thanks, man
Thanks for watching and reaching out. You are correct both are for the line heaters. But neither one will derate you so that leads me to believe you had a code for something else that your guy erased. Hopefully he’s trustworthy. There are 4 lines with heaters and when there a wiring issue to them or a bad heater detected it’ll throw those codes. Best thing to do is check the wiring at the connectors like in the video and that’ll give you some insight into if it’s gna be a quick fix. Otherwise Gta start testing wires.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 It is not about trust in my neck of the woods anymore. It is about lack of knowledge. I would enjoy trucking if there were knowledgeable technicians. The fact there aren't any makes trucking a pain in the butt. My mechanic is a parts changer and when it comes to aftertreatment he candidly tells you it is not his field. The guy I went claims he is good but says he does not actually fix the things but only tells you what the problem is. When I sent him the codes, he said he is pretty sure it is the inlet NOx sensor. So, he took out the DEF doser and did a conversion test. It passed and he put back the doser and forced a regen and said if it comes clean then you have no problem. And aside from that DEF heater line code, it came back clean. DEF tanks shows 4 bars now because I poured in 4 gallons of DEF. The 4 codes I had are 3216, 4364, 3364 and 5246. I left trucking 10 years and the coronovirus pushed me back to it. Now, I have to learn about this aftertreatment thing if I need to survive. I need to find out what derated the truck. How come you don't have your own shop when you are this good, man?
@@moethedeaf2746 Man I appreciate that but with a shop comes so much overhead to take care of, that initial cost would be crazy. Hopefully one day that will change and il be able to make that happen.
I feel your pain with the aftertreatment,,There is always an issue every single day with another truck I see. But no turning back now for the standerds. Just the push to electric..
But on the positive note glad to hear you back in the trucking buisness and know this you are making the difference out there and even though the world doesnt say it we all appreciate you and your fellow opperators for keeping the country moving.
Can you tell me when ,how, then ground signal coming from the dos ECM is coming on? For example when eng running or key on etc. Ground is for heater relay coil side.
Thx a lot, although I’m not doing it myself, lol, 👊🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
I have same issue 2023 freightliner cascadia fault code 4355-5 . 2 check engine light the one is blinking. Freightliner dealer told me my DEF heater line went out we ordered i have to wait 2 weeks I hope the temperature won’t drop until I replace the parts
Hello, I'm interested in what style of orange gloves are you using in min 5:37 and the thickness?
I just have that same code on my 2016 freighliner Cascadia I would like to to stop by where exactly are you guys are located? Thank you for this video 👍🏽👍🏽
Than I hope this video helps clarify some details up on what’s involved with that code.
I do appreciate you watching the positive feedback but unfortunately I cannot put my shop name out there yet. Atleast not till I get my own place. But if you haven’t checked out my other vids please do. A lot of good content on this channel. And they make good last minute presents.
Man, you churned out about over 100 quality videos in about a year. Is this your main bread line or you do something else on the side?
Thanks for watching and reaching out. Just being a modern day grease monkey is my main hustle.Videos when I can as a side thing just to keep people aware of behind the scenes magic and to gain some knowledge of repairs being done.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 You are more than a grease monkey, man. I watched several of your videos. I wish my mechanic was half as good as you. I am 62 now and never worked for anyone in the last 25 years. So, I had no choice but to buy my own truck and flatbed trailer and get my own authority. I play in 200 km radius and work 30 to 40 hours a week. It beats working 14 hours as a driver which I cannot do at this age. I will figure out this aftertreatment system. The videos you produced are very valuable. Please keep up the good work and thanks.
Hello I have code 4355 fmi 3 that cant figure out can you shed so light my way
2021 dd15 new line and checked the harness
This is saying one of your def line heaters is showing an open circuit. I’d take a look under the shield wrapping where the connectors are. There’s usually rub through points there. If not there then start checking power to all your def line heaters.
What’s up JD I was wondering I have the same code 5488-5 I did replace htr 5 line but code still exists. I looked around for any damaged wires ect. Didn’t see any. If I replace the one box harness will that fix the break in the wire? Or would it be harness more towards the driver side? Thanks bro I appreciate your videos!
Thanks for reaching out. That code is caused by one of three issues. Def line, acm, or atd harness. The main culprit is the atd harness with a rub through by the connector. To the def line. But atd harness is the usual place and not really pricey.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 thanks 🙏🏼 bro keep up the good work! I got to get that harness so..I got to hurry my ass up lol ✌🏼
I changed both lines but the check engine light has been coming on and off for about a week ! Any idea what Elle’s may be the problem thank you I appreciate it a lot !
If the light is still coming on and this is the code. Your issue is either acm internal issue or the atd harness side issue. One of those will be your failure.
Hello, thanks for the video and I have a engine code, says SCR Line Heater #4 Circuit Failed Open spn 4357 fmi 5 , and I don’t see any broken lines try to clear code and it won’t go away. Do you have any idea what is going on with the truck?
This will be most likely a open in the harness most likely by the scr connector. If it’s not that it’s either the a def line or an acm.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 thank you for your reply
I changed both lines but it still Throws the same code smp5488 ? It comes and goes throughout the day.
There is a few diff code variations for these lines depending on how they fail.
Is that the same as Diffuser heater? Ive got one with that code and cant find were it is on the truck lol
Great question man. That would be referring to the older style dd engines. They used a metering unit on the side of the ATD onebox and in that unit was a diffuser heater for the def. So slightly different style but same principle. Those one box harnesses are known to rub in multiple spots so if your getting a code for diffuser i would definitely look into your wiring on that side. Hope that helps.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 Thank you very much im not to firmiliar with the older ones. Its a 2013 and seems to be very prone to DEF dosing issues.
JD u work in Phoenix thanks
Yes sir, But at a shop I cannot name as of now.
What kind of heat shield you used
I use heat shield wrap, can buy online or at any dealer.
I have that code SPN 5488 FMI5 , Change both line but the check light still with the same code
The trouble shooting would lead you to checking voltage’s for the heater lines. Did you check that part or jump to replacement of the lines. That check would determine if lines are bad or possibly the acm.

What happen if I drive my truck for 1 week I just have that code spn 5488?
I have replaced the Def heater line ..code was spn 5488 ...and still have the issue..Can anyone let me know if there is a fuse for def..heater line or a relay
There’s only a few things causing this code. A faulty acm, a bad def heater, a break in the harness. If you have replaced the line I’d check the harness side for a poor connection or break. Majority of the time it’s just corrosion in the wires.
Thanks u very much for your advise...I finally found the problem..its was at the acm..harness..the plastic cover damaged the haners so I just reconnect the wires that were cut..job done
My damn engine light came on 2 days ago spn 4357 FMI 4 took it to TA and he said yea you got a short circuit somewhere I said no shit fix it and find it, nope charged me 113
Man I feel you there. I’ve always hated taking in my vehicle and getting a response like that. And I think,, why are you even open. With that code your more than likely dealing with one of the lines in the video. Either a dub through , corrosion , or just a Bad line. Makes me want to open a shop even more hearing about these experiences. Hope you get that figured out soon. I don’t believe there’s an Eng reaction to that code. So no derate, just won’t be able to warm up the def if you travel in the cold.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 thanks for your response sure do wish you had a shop and close to okla I'd probably be your #1 customer with this damn truck and it's DPF issues
Where you located?
Unfortunately I do not have a shop of my own or one I can put on here. But hopefully that changes soon.
Ddlink training
is it drivable to make it to my hometown
With a code like this you should have a derate of 25% but I’ve seen truck go over a year without getting this code fixed and no derate. So I’d say more than likely your fine. Some people don’t mind the cel, for me it would drive me crazy knowing something is wrong. Great question though.
@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 so far I haven't gotten a derate. it drives me crazy knowing something is wrong too but I'm like 15 hours away from my local mechanic shop. it's always a cheaper repair for me when I get it fixed back at home.
@@jorgefacio690 completely understand that. More than likely you should be good to go. Atleast your aware of the repair procedure now.

@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 that’s what’s going with me I need to change it have it in the truck but it’s cold n I don’t want to b under the tru k
I'm gonna go ahead n replace both lines....smh fuckin lines are almost 400 apiece mann....just replace the one and save the owner a lil money..that gonna cost atleast 1300 .....
400 apiece that sounds a little steep. Last one I did I think both the lines together were almost 300 bucks. Labor maybe four hours. Nothing too crazy. I double check and make sure you getting the best price
