      Hi Shogo, my name is Kevin, im form Perú and i love your videos. I started training iaido 3 months ago and I bought both the initial kit and the iaido uniform by tozando. But, they gave me an obi not a kaku obi. So, talking to my sensei, he told me that there is no problem. But I wanted to ask you if you know a way to also tie the obi or what is your opinion about it. Thank you very much, I hope your answer.

    • @Blondie42
      @Blondie42 2 года назад +17

      Be aware of the fact that if you have any knots in the back it could be very unpleasant when rolling or doing ukemi where you're on your back. In Aikido it's better to tie all knots in the front.

    • @taniacharrier2210
      @taniacharrier2210 Год назад +3

      @@Blondie42that's right. This way of wearing hakama is not suitable for aïkido. I tried and the knot behind hurted my back.

      Eh... I'm watching from boredom, if I'm being honest. I've worn hakama for decades. I just want to see how our friend Shogo wears his. 👍👍EDIT: Shogo ties the hakama slightly differently than I do, but does the obi identically. None the less, this is probably the best hakama tutorial I've seen. Well done, Shogo.

    Nice video Shogo!
    In Aikido, we do it quite similar. The two biggest differences are probably that the knots can’t be on the back and the plastic to hold the hakama up isn’t there because it would be uncomfortable when doing ukemi, and that many practitioners prefer the thinner obi you also see in Judo and the like.

    • @MikeGill87
      @MikeGill87 2 года назад +3

      Our sensei likes the thinner obi (not kaku) even for iaido but I opted to get both and very much prefer the kaku obi. In the end, I think for every budo there's plenty of ways to do it and as with everything, you do it in a way your sensei is at least fine with.

    I started training Iaido last week and my teacher asked me to repeat the folding and wearing of the hakama at home so I could learn and memorize all the knots but I couldn't recall most of it. Then I got the notification of this video and you saved me. Now I just got to rewatch this video like ten times but eventually I will memorize everything :)

    Origato, Shogo! I am very grateful to you for your kind tutorial 🙏 I tried to find myself in Judo, Aikido, Jiu-jitsu, Kendo... But in our small country, Lithuania, we have only cheaters of martial arts. In any Dojo you go, the "master" will kill you with unbearable physical training and will show you some techniques for the 10 Dan or nearly, while you are only beginner. They suck your money, put your health on the edge and teach you NOTHING. So I started to learn from RUclips videos, and you are one of the brightest Teachers for me 💯⛩️🇯🇵 keep going, Shogo!

    You have inspired me to want to pursue Iaido. The only thing holding me back are my thoughts if I'm too old to start practicing this beautiful art. I'm 25 at the moment, will be turning 26 in a few months, would deeply appreciate your input! Much love and support from the Netherlands :)

    Thank you for this video, it's funny because I practice aikido and after 5 years I still can't wear and fold my hakama correctly, I'm glad in Tokyo I wasn't a shodan yet so I avoided an awkward situation while in France hakama is allowed at 3rd Kyu not 1st Dan.
    I'll try this method by curiosity for sure it is a really nice video, take care of yourselves !

    I recently bought a Hakama when I visited Japan (and I think it even came from the store in Kyoto you mentioned) and after it came out of the washing machine, all the folds were messed up (it's made from cotton). As soon as I can, I'm gonna try and fold it properly.

    I have hakama. I usually have then dry-cleaned because they were dyed with real indigo. I usually bring instructions on how to iron the pleats for the cleaners.
