  • 9Tech misleads consumers with fake virus warnings, then shows them confusing screens to make the customer think they have a virus when they do not. My Windows 7 virtual machine was brand new and 100% clean of viruses, yet they still claim I need to pay over $300 to have it "fixed."

    Suggestions:
    1. If they ask what site you've been to lately, say porn.
    2. If they ask whats your job, say your homeless or low income to make them feel a little guilty.
    3. If they ask you to join their company, say yes and see what happens

    At the end when he ask you if the computer is fixed, you should have check the stopped services, the event logs, etc. and tell him he haven't fixed anything... According to the tech support, he was supposed to "fix" those things.

    I'm pretty sure this isn't the most lucrative form of scamming. It's a long story but I was in an IRC chat room trying to figure out someone's geolocation based off a puzzle. (Hard because it was all on tor). When someone finally did win and receive $5k, i and a few other people started asking the game master questions. He made of 140k or something in a year from making and distributing hostageware to rich clients (from his legitimate job). He part of like a whole ring that he only has one contact and one more person in his office. Shits crazy...

      Ransomware is nasty stuff. That's why you should always keep offline backups of everything!

    • @luciascarlet
      @luciascarlet 8 лет назад

      Does it necessarily have to be offline? I only have time machine backups of my OS X that are offline but my Windows data and my external drive's content are backed up online.

    • @uuu12343
      @uuu12343 8 лет назад

      +defi well, offline is the ultimate backup,online servers, like "cloud"-in-the-sky server is just that,a server and is still hackable and data still can be lost after a crazy malfunction hence, offline is the best imo, memory card usb-microusb otg readers, external hard disk and ssd etc

      I watch these videos all the time, and actually this is the most respectable company yet. they provided all services they mentioned, and they did not even take payment. What type of scammer does not take payment, they also did not even try to do anything to the computer when payment was not made, sounds respectable to me. If you did not know anything about computers you would appreciate the work and time spent. Free or not, its the support and knowledge you pay for. What does Geeksquad charge? What type of work does Geeksquad do? Pretty much the same thing, especially if you dont know what they are talking about.

      No, they showed stopped services - told problem -> LIE ; they opened taskmanager to "scan" the PC - LIE ; Network protection _ LIE and so on. A real support would not show nonsens or crap. The popup in the browser is already fake. And so on... scam!

    Well, at least they added AdBlock Plus? I prefer uBlock Origin or just uMatrix but at least they added that for you. They also ran Crap Cleaner, so there's that. I install that on friend's computers when they bring them over to get cleaned up.
    Seeing as they are just virtual images, it might be amusing to get the computer well and truly infected with a bunch of nasties. Then you can see if they can actually do anything besides pretend. I am thinking that I must be a little twisted as this looks like it can be quite entertaining.

    • @galeng73
      @galeng73 8 лет назад

      Heh, yeah, I'm familiar with ransomware. I've never had any infections or anything - I'm old and have been using a computer for longer than the scammers - I suspect.
      Err... And I don't use Windows so the odds of me getting something via drive-by are rather slim. (I'm a Linux user but not a zealot or anything.)
      I should spin up a Windows VM and go play with a few of them. If I keep them busy with me, they won't be harming other people.
      Speaking of being old, things have really changed. Most of the viruses were pranks back in the 80s and even into the 90s. Most "hacking" was more to discover than it was to harm. The worst things any of us really did was known as "phreaking" and that was just to get cheaper/free phone calls because it was expensive when you had to dial into an individual computer or a small network.
      No, it's never going to be like that again and those were interesting days but not the best of days - it's much better today, in the vast majority of ways. Still, people generally weren't such dicks back then. Of course, far fewer people owned computers then.

    I know I'm going to get bashed for this but that was a pretty professional group. While the services they offer are indeed common knowledge and the software they use has free licensing, an older individual would greatly appreciate and pay for someone to do it for them. The fact is though...you weren't even charged for those things. I'd like to see a follow up video as while the sell is a lie (try setting foot on an US car dealership) the services mentioned were provided.
