  • Restoration of an ax that had lain in the ground for many years. The ax has a lot of rust and deep pitting. I will try to restore this ax to make a new handle and test it.

Well done! The axe head was well beyond restoring to a smooth finish so you chose to keep the aged look. Another option would have been a hammered effect. Either way it was a good video!

Actually, there's no reason to have a smooth finish. Removing the loose scale and wire wheeling or media blasting is all you need to do with an axe head like that before giving it a layer of paint to prevent future rust. Of course... sharpening the cutting edge is a must. Peace & good vibes.

IMHO, it was a mistake to heat up the axe head in the foundry... it would have been better to leave the original temper in it. As for the rust removal, the heavy scale removal should have been done with the angle grinder and a heavy wire wheel. Tapping off loose chunks was OK as was media blasting though I noticed that your media blasting setup was rather weak. You might choose to experiment with electrolysis for rust removal in the future, just food for thought. I also would have left the original shape of the cutting edge and resharpened it. By the looks of it, it could do with a serious sharpening at the end of the video! The handle looked pretty good, overall... not too bad for returning this axe to functional use. Thank heavens you didn't do what other nooblets do - grind the axe head down to half the original size and polish it to a mirror finish which nets you... an axe head that's useless. Best wishes!
