Quieting my Onan QG2500i Inverter generator with the 0155-2449 Resonator

- Installing the Onan Cummins 0155-2449 Resonator on a 2500/2800 generator is a quick and easy way to quiet down the exhaust tone.
When listening to the sound at a perpendicular angle to the exhaust, there's sound reduction isn't as noticeable as when you are directly facing the exhaust.
The HGLAA inverter generator I have is significantly quieter than the HGJBB non inverter generator it replaced, but this resonator helped quiet it further.

Not a huge difference in decibels but a huge difference in tone and annoyance.
Yep. It's a very noticeable difference in the exhaust tone. I actually prefer using the Onan now instead of my EU2200i
I think with the resonator the sound is a bit lower pitched and more pleasing.
Yes, it is. It removes the harshness to the exhaust note.
I ran my exhaust all the way above my roof to get the smell and sound away but it helped a lot but that resonator would probably help some more so try it it makes a great way to keep smell and sound above the roof so I think with resonator would be the cueing on the cake !
Thx so much for doing this!!!!
I don’t want to disregard the noise outside of the camper but I’m more interested in what effect the resonator had inside the camper. Any tests or thoughts?
It is quieter inside too.
It might help build a stack with multiple mufflers sound will go straight up
So informative ! We are about to purchase a generator ourselves.
Thanks for watching. Glad you found the video informative.
When I bought my 1150 new, the dealer in NC suggested a resonator. I did purchase it and installed it about it two months later. But before I installed it, my gen (same as yours) was making so much noise that I couldn't stand it. It turns out, the gen was vibrating so bad, that the exhaust pipe was shaking and beating off the frame of the camper. I installed the resonator thinking it would help, I also I also added a second support strap. The vibration is still bad, so bad that the exhaust pipe broke clean at the flange. I had to have it welded while on the road, I pretty much just quit using it. Its vibrates so bad and makes so much noise, I'm thinking of pulling that "dead weight" out of the camper. Any thoughts?
Sounds like a warranty issue. The engine does vibrate some, but there's a lot of vibration dampening mechanisms inside the generator to keep the vibration from being transmitted to the frame work below the gen. It would probably help to check the tightness of the bolts that hold the generator to the camper frame. I used some thick, heavy duty pieces of rubber between the bottom of the generator and the camper frame to further quiet / reduce any vibration. That might fix your problem too.
@@deltabravo1257, last week I was at the Tampa RV Show and spoke to a guy at the Cummins/Onan booth about the problem. They had a display there and fired up the same gen I have, run like a top. He suggested taking it to a Onan service dept to see if there is a problem with the gen or how it was mounted. I did just watch a video from Cupcake Chronicles about installing rubber blocks between the gen and camper frame, I ordered some blocks.
I need to watch some of their videos too. I found their channel a few weeks ago and then forgot about it, then found it again today.
My older 2500LP has that same poot-poot to the exhaust and the resonator all but eliminated that annoying sound. Volume it doesn't do so much for, but that poot-poot is especially annoying.
YES! That poot-poot is super annoying, especially on the non inverter style generator. You can hear it half way across a campground without the resonator. It seems as though the 2500/2800 models are the only ones that make the annoying poot-poot.
Looks like video audio is self adjusting because with muffler sounds louder to me. Lower pitched sound may sound more pleasing at first glance but it goes trough walls and windows much better.
The camera doesn't "self adjust" the audio levels. I also didn't do any manipulation of the audio to make anything seem louder or quieter.
I bet one of those would be more effective if it has a larger bowl shape instead of a long pipe. Like the size of a torque converter .
does adding the resonator mess with the fuel efficiency? so weird it changes the sound but doesnt seem to affect the DB that much. i def like the tone with resonator. almost a soothing sound lol
The resonator doesn't affect the fuel efficiency.
Out of curiosity, did you consider the Onan 1551258 muffler instead of the resonator?
No, I hadn't considered the muffler. I didn't know it existed.
I'm assuming this is with existing muffler that the generator comes with?
Yes.
Just T the genset exhaust into the main muffler system already!
T it in to what main exhaust system? The generator exhaust system "is" the main exhaust system of the generator.
@@deltabravo1257 I got the impression I was looking at a Motor-Home with its own engine, drivetrain, exhaust, etc..?
On such I would T into the existing exhaust system upstream of any mufflers, using flexible exhaust couplings etc.
For a fixed RPM engine; I would also have a good look at Quarter Wave Tubes and/or Helmholtz resonators...
@@user-jp2em5hy5f It's illegal to have two engines connected to one exhaust system.
Connecting two engines to one exhaust system is wrong on so many levels.
It's unsafe, because exhaust from one engine will over power the other and create back pressure.
@@deerinmyyard8430 Maybe a T junction so each can be blocked off separately and share the pipe from that point to the outlet individually, but if it's illegal to connect like that then it doesn't matter about a T junction (I'm in Australia so no clue on Regs).
what btu Air conditioner does your camper have and how does the new generator run it?
My camper had the 11k BTU A/C. The generator run it fine.
I'm in the process of installing a Mach 8 ultra low profile A/C, which is a 13.5k BTU unit.
@@deltabravo1257 awesome thank you.
Is there any reason why you have to permanently install the resonator rather than just slipping it on at the campground?
It's permanently installed, as shown in a photo at the very end of the video
One good reason is that it's possible to forget about it,drive off and have it vibrate off during your travels.
Where did you find the longer drop pipe?
I ordered it through a Cummins/Onan dealer.
Is there a direction for the resonator?
I don't think it matters which direction it gets installed. I don't recall seeing a directional "flow" arrow on it.
