- This song was first released in 1904 and this is the original release of that record. It is in pretty amazing condition for it's age. When this record was released, Vets of the Civil War would have been about the same age as Vietnam Vets are today.
The song was composed by Henry Clay Work in 1865, after the war was over. It was well known, and much hated in the South, by the time this was pressed.
And also much hated by Sherman himself.
Do it again Uncle Billy!
Already did
General William Sherman Thanks

@@utahraptor4729874 your name… it’s hilarious
@@Themehsofproduction not the first time I got that
A shame they couldn't fit all the verses in. Astounding.
This had to have been recorded either early in 1904 or earlier as the label doesn't mention the 1904 St. Louis Exposition Grand Prize which late 1904 and later Black and Gold Columbia's mention. I have this same recording on a Orange Silvertone (Sears and Roebuck) label without the announcement which was removed. Early Silvertone's used Columbia masters.
Such beautiful antique song. I love everything from those ol' good times. Thank you for sharing this
I think this was probably one of the earliest phonograph songs I ever heard online. That was, 14 years ago.
Wonderful antique.
wow that is wonderful sound
What a wonderful record!
Henry Clay Work also composed "Grandfather's Clock" ---
and its successor, "Sequel To Grandfather's Clock".
Wonderful
Please tell me this is a reproduction copy you're using, it would be a horrible shame to damage such an old record that's in such good condition by actually playing it!
wont cause it any damage, the original players for those old records had tracking forces measured in ounces plural (i have one with a recommended tracking force of 1/2lb stamped into the disc!), while a modern record player only tracks at between 1 and 9 grammes, those old records were built to withstand the ridiculous weight of the original machines so listening to them on a more modern turntable causes next to zero wear and tear on them
Of course it's not a copy, what thinking? These records will Outlast you or I, and especially your comment.

This should be titled "Marching Through California", Do It Again Uncle Billy to California!
in what way is modern California anything anywhere near similar to the southern states succeeding
@@DjNotNicesNucka they just tried to repeal their state level civil rights act during the last election, so that they could impose racial quotas on universities.
@@Kieselmeister which is equivalent to succession and civil war from the Union to protect the institution of slavery.
Would rather see it done to Texas or Florida, clearly they didn't learn their lesson the first time
