  • On the 24th September 2022 Steamrail Victoria operated a rare triple header steam train to Traralgon; the first of three trips to celebrate 100 years of the Victorian Railways K Class steam locomotive. The trip was operated by locomotives K153 (masquerading as the original fleet leader K100), K183 & K190.
In this video we chase the triple header steam train on its trip to Traralgon and back, starting at Seddon in Melbourne's western suburbs, before catching it at Hawksburn, Berwick, Nar Nar Goon and Warragul. Along with a number of others I then set up at the Haunted Hills expecting to see the train fly through at speed, but instead we see the train make an emergency stop after the lead locomotive K100 suffered a major mechanical issue. Afterwards the train crews made an extraordinary effort to make temporary repairs and restart the train on what is a steep 1 in 50 grade.
As a result of the issue the train was speed restricted for the rest of the day. We see the train at Hernes Oak (where we also see the Maryvale Paper Train), Morwell and finally, the arrival into Traralgon. K190 led the trip home where we see the train departing Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Trafalgar, Warragul, Garfield, Pakenham, before ending with a small whistle show at Southbank as the train passed over the Flinders Street viaduct.
