she says keto can lower testosterone or hormones... what do you think a high carb or non keto diet does? it spikes insulin and causes insultin resistance and weight gain and that will lower your hormones.....

My family and I are big supporters of Sarah, buy her books, listen to her podcasts. I have to say I am disappointed with this lecture. There are so many people successful and healthy on keto, let alone people who actually go "zero carb / carnivore (see the Anderson family who are all healthy and eat nothing but ribeye steak every day for 20 years). I do agree that keto is not perfect for everyone. My wife struggles with it an prefers more veggies and fruit. However to warn of keto in this day and age as dangerous and a threat to "most people" is nonsense. I eat very few veggies at all, my diet is mostly eggs and meats with full fat dairy when desired. My blood work has been without issue or deficiencies for over 5 years eating this way. Many plant foods have benefits but also have toxins as natural defense systems and it is well documented the human digestion track does not process fibrous plants as well and animal sourced fats and meat (see Dr. Barry Groves lecture "What we are designed to eat").
While I am not here to promote a carnivore diet or my specific way of eating, many many of us that show initial improvements on primal/paleo style have seen even better improvements with keto diet. Fasting and keto in particular has impressive returns not just in fat loss, but in anti inflammatory markers, hormone regulation (especially insulin sensitivity), and far better sleep patterns.

I personally agree with the notion that the ketogenic diet is not an optimal long term approach for a lot of people. However, my issue with many of the studies highlighting the adverse effects of keto either make no mention of the nutritional makeup of individuals' diets or include terrible sources of nutrition in the form of meal replacement shakes full of poor quality fats and additives. Is it any wonder that kids who followed a ketogenic diet made up of these 'nutrition drinks' instead of a whole foods diet experienced bone loss? There is no clear answer as to whether the drinks or the metabolic state are to blame.

Seriously, "If you were to ask me, I would say that the ketogenic diet is a drug." That is just a nonsense from the get go. As Hippocrates said, Let food be thy medicine... Many foods and many diets have therapeutic or even medicinal value, but to conflate them with alopathic pharmaceuticals is seriously sloppy and incendiary thinking. I am ashamed for the speaker.
The title of this video is clickbait. I am ashamed for you.
She is conflating the deep ketogenic diet originally deployed for epileptics with the modern ketogenic diet used for a variety of purposes. This is just trickery. Shameful trickery. It is grossly misleading to point to "clinical trials" as the reference source for contra-indications and negative outcomes. What clinical trials, funded by whom, employing what interventions, deploying what specific diet, on how large a cohort, for what duration, and in contrast to what control group? None of these details are forthcoming, and the devil is in the details. This is junk analysis of unnamed metadata. Garbage in, garbage out.

Humans have regularly entering ketosis for hundreds of thousands of years. Consistently and continuously eating large amounts of carbs was not possible until industrial agriculture. Traditional farmers didn't have massive surplus yields. Grains in the past were typically saved for when most needed, not eaten for every meal and multiple snacks throughout the day. Without trying, most humans in the past regularly went into ketosis.

I just wasted a good half hour reading a few of the extracts available.First in Kang et al., the children's overall mortality was the same as normal population and nowhere in the abstract did they attribute these deaths to the diet. Most epileptics also have other medical issues including sudden death. Second, the inuit study clearly states that the gene mutations effect is on a newborns ability to produce ketones not adults. Third, in the gut microbiome study, in the abstract, it footnotes another study done on rats with "milk fat." to explain the gut microbiome changes. Fear mongering click bait! Although she does have a point that ketogenic diets can be unhealthy for some people, throwing out bullshit interpretations of studies and pretending that their is scientific consensus because she says "we know" all the time is just disgusting. Where is her proof for all these maladies associated with a ketogenic diet? But don't believe me, read it for yourself.

I’ve been on the keto diet and intermittent fasting for about 26 days. I did it specifically for the neurological benefits according to science. . I’m not sure if it’s helping yet as I’m probably still becoming fat adapted. I have lost a bunch of fat and gained muscle. Ive been exercising pretty much everyday. I’ve eaten more vegetables on this diet than I ever did before. I think it’s important to differentiate junk keto from a keto diet that includes lots of healthy vegetables. I’m not sure if I will stay on keto long term and cycle in and out of ketosis or end up more paleo but I’m so glad I tried this. I had already seen health benefits prior to keto from going gluten free.

Nice. I've been doing it for years. I love it. After a long time, I became really flexible, metabolically. I can eat a lot of foods that I couldn't the first 6 months or year and stay in ketosis. I also try to eat seasonally, so if beets or grapes from my garden or or even a little cheat here and there knocks me out? So what? I'll be back in tomorrow. I'm probably in ketosis 85-90% of the time. Fasting also helps you stay in with a bit more of the old carbs (or at least what feels like more).

Dr. Ballantyne's pie chart at 10:30 into the presentation is a bit misleading. It shows that the epileptic children being treated received a 75% fat diet but at a 25% reduction of calories. If these children were to receive a full maintenance level calorie diet (or considering the contribution of their own body fat in this case) (TDEE) then that is more like an 81% fat diet. The ketogenic diet formulations used for most of the studies referenced used the 3:1 or even the 4:1 Fat grams to (Carb grams + Protein grams) protocol, which resulted in up to a 92% fat diet with extremely low protein. This may instead explain the children's failure to thrive. Treating severe epilepsy was determined to outweigh the other negative issues described by Dr. Ballantyne.
However, the "original" ketogenic diet for the therapeutic treatment of epilepsy is not the same as the "properly formulated ketogenic diet" for otherwise healthy adults. Although these studies are interesting and important, they are perhaps not entirely applicable for most people.

Very sad. This woman has serious thyroid problems and has gained some weight despite her Paleo/Keto lifestyle.
I think she needs to look again at her own health issues which have almost certainly been impacted by the drugs she needs, compounded by the inevitable changes which happen womens' bodies as we age.
I have had serious medical issues since birth and can genuinely say that the Keto lifestyle has significantly improved my quality of life.
One size does not fit all and in my case I've found that the more "extreme" I am in restricting carbohydrates, the better I feel physically and mentally. It's not even that hard once you get over the extreme idea of not feeling hungry at all(ever).
There is no real medical support for this lifestyle, so we need to experiment on ourselves to a certain degree and carry out a lot of research in order to make it work on a personal level.
I suspect Keto will prevail and I hope that this very clever lady will find a way to deal with her latest health crisis before she shares any more of her theories. (Which I'm sure will be far more constructive than what has been proposed here).

Vegetables take the place of other carbs you would normally have on your plate, like rice or pasta. (Measure before cooking). I eat lots of green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, bok choy, chard and all varieties of lettuce), as well as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, bell pepper, onion, eggplant, zucchini, celery, green beans, asparagus, mushrooms, tomatoes, sprouts, and occasionally kumara, pumpkin or squash.
