  • Sharing the lightest yet functional layers we could find for us while hiking on the Appalachian Trail in the shoulder season. This selection is on the extreme side of Ultralight and definitely won't work for everyone in every condition. Hopefully, this helps someone trying to figure out their layering system.
While there may be lighter layers out there, this is what we've found for now. These items trade weight for durability, so they have to be treated with care. There are plenty of other great options out there to choose from...these are just the lightest we could find as of now.
    Trade-offs:
Features - No pit-zips or cinch cords on the rain jacket
Durability - This gear needs to be treated with care.
Price - While not the most expensive gear out there, this gear will cost more than budget gear that is heavier but works just fine.
    Weights:
    Tops:
2.5 oz Patagonia Capilene Cool Lightweight T-Shirt, LG
4.4 oz Senchi Alpha 60 with Zip, XL
5.3 oz Montbell Plasma 1000 Down Jacket, LG
    1.3 oz Zpacks Goose Hood
3.3 oz Rab Phantom Waterproof Pull-on Jacket, XL
    Bottoms:
3.5 oz Senchi Alpha 90 Leggings
6.1 oz Chickn Legs 4" Shorts (not light but we like them)
2.7 oz Montbell Dynamo Wind Pants 2.7 oz
    Gloves/Mitts:
2.4 oz Smartwool Active Fleece Wind Mitts
0.8 oz Enlightened Equipment Rain Mitts (not available now, try Zpacks or Mountain Laurel Designs)
    Honorable Mentions:
8.7 oz Jolly Gear Evergreen UL Sun Hoodie, LG
1.0 oz ParaPack P-Cap Lite Hat

Thx for watching! Your vids are super helpful when we research AT shelters and trailhead parking. Maybe we'll see you at 2024 Trail Days. Saw you walk by with the parade this year...would love to chat. You can't miss Willow dragging me around. Take care
